I think they USPS needs to look inward for their problem. I'm sure the economy has an impact on them as well as almost every business, but poor management decisions in the past must have had a bigger impact.
Here's a good example: we travel from one side of Flordia to the other at least once a month and like to take the back roads. Several years ago we noticed a lot of brand new LARGE post offices on the out-shirts of some tiny little towns. However when you go inside to mail a package, none of their equipment had been updated and there was usually only one clerk working there.
These places just don't need such large post offices. However they could use more staff and updated equipment.

Some folks like me used to live in city and delivering mail to us is no b ig deal,but now we move faraway from their traditional infrastructure which has been in place for years to new subdivisions.
The post office would have to deliver our mail whether it is one piece of junk or many high priced packages, it has to build mailbox stations,their drivers have to burn more gasoline ,wear down their vehicles to deliver mail to the same household which used to live within their reach.
The post office does not get more from us,I can see why they are losing money.
