Can we opt out of the sponsored links that are coming up on the new auction page? Why would sellers want to advertise other sellers merchandise?

I think we do have to allow them. Just another scathingly brilliant idea from eBay.

I deeply resent this. We pay for these listings and only to advertise for other sellers. Not fair.

Hello,

Based on the following eBay announcement, it looks like they will let you opt out:

http://www2.ebay.com/aw/core/200905.shtml#2009-05-11133219

"You can opt out of cross-merchandising with other sellers, but consider the trade-offs carefully—this is a great opportunity to boost exposure."

Regards,
Nathan

Nathan, I have opted out of the "cross-merchandising with other sellers", but it is still coming up. There must be some other place to do it.

Looks to me like that only controls YOUR merchandise on another sellers listings.

I cannot see ANY advantage to advertise my item on anothers sellers pages or advertising theirs on mine.
Go to Walmart and see how many Target ads you see!

Or Lowes and look at Home Depot merchandise.

Or go to Amazon and see...oh wait. Cross-merchandising is a big moneymaker for Amazon and 3P sellers.

You might want to see how it works when the new item page is rolled out before heaping scorn on the idea.

("Sponsored links" are ads, not cross-merchandising.)

Amber - I am not seeing cross merchandising on my listing. Do you mean you see something when you click on "related items"? I don't see anything there or on the sidebars. Anyone else?

Neglus: It is on my recently listed items that are in the "new listing view" version. I have checked into Marketing Tools and I have "NO" for cross-marketing and promote similar items. I can't find anything else to stop it. I will call eBay sometime and ask if I can stop the sponsored links.

fluff, are you in favor of the cross merchandising?

I don't know enough about it yet to decide. I need to know the rule set.

For instance, in one category I list in, over half of all listings are mine. That could either be bad or good, cross-merchandising-wise. It *could* mean that since I have so many more listings than my competitors, they get an unfair boost by tagging along on my item pages. But if the rules say my stuff is cross-merchandised to my item pages along with theirs, I'd be okay with that.

Plus, I'm not so sure that even if the cross-merchandise is exclusively theirs it's so bad. My next-closest competitor takes such crappy pictures that you often can't make out the item. I can charge three times what she does for the same pair of earrings, offer free shipping, and still sell more than she does.

There is one school of thought that says with the new item page everyone will have to have a scrolling gallery just to stay even. I'm not sure I agree with that, and I definitely don't want to seed hundreds of listings with gallery code only to have to yank it out later. BTDT.

I must have completely opted out - I don't even have a tab today for "related items". When I did have a tab it was always empty. Do others see other sellers' items in "related items" tab (besides Amber?)?

Amber may be confusing Sponsored Links, which are ads to off-eBay sites (even though they may not look like it) with Cross-Merchandising, which keeps you on the eBay site.

The distinction is worth preserving. Sponsored Links add no value for sellers because they divert traffic off-site. With Cross-Merchandising the customer hasn't escaped yet.

Speaking of customer escapes, is anyone using a retargeting service with their website?

I know the difference between them - I don't see either on my item pages - I do see sponsored links at the end of the search pages.

I am very curious to see what these will be on the new item page - just wondering if anyone else sees them or maybe it's a test in Canada?
