I sold an item for $650, paid and printed my label via Paypal but could only do $500 insurance on line.
I took it to the post office to get the other $150. The clerk printed the insurance label - charged me the difference and then put a new bar code over my printed label. I asked her if that changed my tracking and she yes. She said I could track it by the number on the insurance receipt.
Well no - not really. I just tried and the USPS website said that I can't track using that number.
I called the customer service number and was told I could have purchased a DC. Well I did but it was with the old bar code.
So now I've lost all my tracking.
I hope I have an honest buyer or this could be a problem.
Why doesn't the post office actually train their employees. I would have been better off to purchase the additional insurance with DSI or U-Pic.
Just needed to vent.

Not to worry. You are holding a post office receipt for insurance. The PO will not let that package out of their hands without a signature. If something should happen to your package, you have it covered at your end and they are obligated to scan or account for the package on their end.

Use your frustated energy for something productive like sending emails to ebay about their crappy new item pages <g>

You are so right. I wasted too much energy yesterday on this.
I just sent an email about the new page.

Actually you made a good point with your original post ebabe. Many people on the board were probably not aware that the package would no longer be trackable by DC once you purchased insurance at the counter.

I have run into it before and have done the mental gymnastics myself. I often elect to purchase insurance at the counter on expensive shipments just so I have a PO receipt. I do not trust that the PO will scan my labels created online.

We travel often and many POs now refuse to scan DC and have even refused to scan a package with insurance printed online. Since it is my my money and my merchandise, I want proof that the PO has it. How they can refuse to scan a label that includes a service I have paid for is beyond my comprehension.

Lt. Ray, you need to print the USPS Scan Form, and present the scan form with the package. The postal clerks have to use the hand scanner that is used on the mail routes when the mail is delivered.

If you use the famous, seller friendly, Paypal mail function, to purchase and print your labels, you will not have a scan form. I know that it is available when you use Click-N-Ship, which I use.

The postal clerks, do know that they are to scan the form.

Actually Bill, I have had several POs not even know what to do with a scan form.

I recently took a scan form into a post office in KY that had refused to scan DC the previous day. This PO is the main county branch office. The clerk had never seen a scan form. She carried it around to the other clerks who did not know how to process it and then took it to her supervisor who also did not know what to do with it. She was much relieved when I told her that I would be ok with her just scanning the packages individually <g>.

Is the postal office insurance receipt blue?
It is trackable inside the post office, you need to call them and they will tell you.
but the problem is that Paypal would not be able to track it online.
