Thanks for bringing that to our attention. I sell a lot of craft books and can scan 20 or more pictures for each book, and it takes hours each day. I DO NOT want other people to just use my images, neither will I use theirs. I opted out.

Dont forget you can put a watermark of your user name on each photo here on vendio. Stops any one else using them.

Thanks for the info! Watermarks are all well and good, but they can (with a tiny bit of work) be PhotoShopped out.
I've posted this on the jewelry board on eBay. I'll probably get another pink slap for sharing this info since eBay doesn't feel the need to share it with us.

Thanks for posting this eauction, I'd like to be sure that the item I'm seeing in the auction is the one I'm bidding on.
I opted out.
I will also be adding a line to let my potential buyers know that the item they see in my auction is what they will get.

If you cut and paste the following and place at the end of your description, people will not be able to right click on your auctions. I don't know about Ebay's use of our photos.

This is sooo weird!!
I opted out per instructions.
Used to be you could report to Safe Harbor or whatever they call their security division if someone had "stolen" your pics and they would remove the item if they determined that the pic was yours. Now, they are going to give our pictures away?!?
Who is working for whom??
PS Amazon uses stock photos.

Even with vintage or one of a kind items this can be a problem. A lot of people buy on eBay to resell on eBay. There are probably a good number of them that would gladly snag the photo from the auction they won rather than do the work themselves.

Opted out, thanks! It looks like they will 'credit' you for your pictures as in putting a line in about who took the picture. It also looks like once they get the photo in their 'catalog' it is theirs to use as they see fit. They used a Wii machine as an example. I agree, I want to get the item pictured, not someone else's pictured item.

I will opt-out as well.
It does seem like this would cause concern for the condition of an item. Someone could take the best photo available when it doesn't really represent the condition of their item.

There is a guy who has a store on a free site,he has no merchandise,he just took the pictures of various stores he found on internet and double the asking price.
So far he has sold 18 items.
There is nothing anyone can do,when someone placed an order at his site using Paypal,he will just place an order at the site where the picture come from using Paypal ,asking the shopowner to ship to a third party address.
Now what happens when his customer file a dispute with Paypal ?

No suggestions - maybe they are already using one of yours .
When I first shopped on Amazon it made me crazy that I couldn't look at the actual item I was buying but then I got used to it. I imagine eBay buyers (of non-vintage items) will too. The new item page seems to be set up so that buyers do not need to scroll down to even read the description. It's happening already - I have had several ASAQ's asking for scans of backs of postcards that ARE in the description but not in the upper left corner box where images now appear.

Do you think eBay will catalogue the pictures we host through Vendio, or just the ones we use directly onto eBay?

Question-what is Ebay trying to accomplish?
Let someone copies our photos so they can list without taking photos or buy a camera?

Oh come on now y'all. Where is that sense of sharing and compassion so popular on the board this past year?
We should ALL share our photos and descriptions with those less fortunate who cannot (or refuse) to buy a camera. And why not share your descriptions with those who do not have a clue as to what they are selling or who are just too darn lazy to write their own descriptions. We should feel sorry for these people and give them a hand so they can become successful ebay sellers like ourselves.
Next ebay will require us to write the description in at least 3 foreign languages so we do not deprive anyone the right to use our work.
It is just the new American way.
PS, I opted out the first time I heard about it. I guess I am just a foolish Southerner who thinks it is better for people to earn their wage.

neglus....when I sold postcards..I would set the postcard at just the right angle infront of a small mirror....that way the buyer gets a general idea of the back. I did this with small diecast cars and some buyers thought they were getting two cars instead of one.
ltray...ebay's next move is to LOCK the description tab. What will happen is the buyer clicks a special FEE BUTTON to open the description, each time this happens THE SELLER gets charged an added "small" fee. So basically, you have your LISTING fee, FVF, PAYPAL fee...and now an OPEN SO THE BUYER CAN READ DESCRIPTION fee.

Not to mention the new extra FVF fee we will be charged when a buyer clicks BIN and eBay Checkout fails to connect to PayPal for payment.
I am running a VISTA machine and ebay checkout has not worked since Feb. I either have to use our XP machine or log directly into PayPal to pay for my purchases. I understand the increase in non-paying customers. I think newbies and people who have not used ebay in a while click BIN and then say to heck with it when they cannot get checkout to work.

When I started reading about this, it seemed rather strange, and not a workable system.
Apparently, eBay's "catalog" system is for standard (new) merchandise such as cell phones, etc., and allowing sellers to access this catalog will provide a consistent, accurate means of describing features, etc. so customers can compare.
Why they would want to get involved with photos from seller listings (which may have been lifted from corporate web sites without permission) is a question only they can answer, but could become a problem if they encourage use of photos they don't have permission for. In any event, it is unlikely they have nefarious purposes for the Hull vase or granny square afghan you found at a yard sale or such.
Also, the opt out option only seems to appear on user accounts that have been used for selling, and not on buying-only ones.
So, opt out or not, it is probably of no impact to sellers of individual items.

Problem is... eBay really doesn't go into any detail about what photos they may or may not take. Putting together a product catalog for new merchandise is one thing. But... even their own wording leaves the door open for collecting photos of any merchandise.. including vintage. There's actually big bucks to be made in creating a searchable database for vintage items (and many successful examples already exist). Think of the research and advertising dollars they could generate from YOUR content. I wouldn't put it past eBay to create a subscription-based archive of collectibles, with their sellers generating the content... and not getting a dime for any of it. Don't think for a minute that you can trust eBay... if something isn't spelled out clearly... you can bet there's a reason for it (and probably a devious one).

Oh, I have no doubt that they could/would do things like that (didn't they/do they sell enhanced search of past auctions?).
Like any business, a good piece of value is in the information they collect, and they may want to monetize that. And it's not devious or evil - it's business.
FWIW, I opted out as well(simply because that is always the default position I take).
