I listed a widget with a reserve price. Had 2 bidders and the 2nd bidder emailed me after the auction was over and offered me a price under the reserve price.
I accepted and he emailed me to paypal him an invoice.
Can I do this or do I have to relist the widget as a Buy it Now and have him bid on it??

Well, as you probably know, you can send a request for money through PayPal. I have a friend who does it once in a while and hasn't had any trouble. But now that PayPal is part of eBay it might be ify, wait, this is eBay we are talking about, the right hand does not very often know what the left hand is doing!

The only thing with that is that this is a high ticket item and I want to be sure I am protected by the almighty

The auction is over and you can do this outside of eBay without getting into trouble with eBay. Just send a request for money from PayPal.

I always mention that is is from my "off Ebay inventory" as is yours since it is no longer listed on Ebay. You have a right to sell your items if they are no longer on Ebay.

I've had not problem with off Ebay Paypal payments, but money orders are a great idea, also. Some of my "private" customers prefer it.
Also, what would be the difference if he bought it through Ebay and didn't like it and paid via PayPal?? What protection do you have?
He could then give negative feedback, ding your stars and still have the same rights through PayPal as he does now.
Also, since you do not have an Ebay auction, as long as you have DC, what can he complain about?Don't go into details on your PayPal invoice.

You're right Merrie. I asked him if he would send a m.o. Lets see what he says. Otherwise I will just bill him thru PP without relisting

NO!
The PP SELLERS' non-PROTECTION PLAN does NOT apply to off-feeBay sales!
If he paid with a CREDIT-CARD (NOT a debit/check card), then one has the same protection as just about ANY merchant who accepts credit cards...virtually NONE!
For past TEN years, Ralphie has been spewing the same advice over & over:
"Do NOT accept PP for an amount yer unwilling to pee-pee out the window!KNOW THY COMFORT LEVEL!

Welcome back Tomwii
Neil, PayPal Seller protection does cover the seller on non-ebay sales.Sames rules apply as does for ebay sellers. To see if your transaction is covered just log into your PayPal account, pull up the transaction and look for the "Ok to Ship" checkmark. To the right of that is the "Seller Protection" mark. It should say "eligible" under it if the buyer has proved a confirmed shipping address. You can click on the "Eligible" link to see what is covered.
You can also check the PP help pages to see which type of transaction are covered.
"Seller protection is available for qualified transactions everywhere PayPal is accepted. The Transaction Details page displays whether or not it is eligible for coverage under this policy. If it is, ship to the shipping address displayed on the Transaction Details page. "
