In my research of a girdle diva postcard, i ran across this web page http://www.corsetiere.net/Spirella/Strange_Names.htm. Flashbacks of having to graduate in Junior High from a garter belt to a girdle. Shocking whispers of "Look at her jiggle, she's not wearing a girdle"!

Thank goodness, I missed that requirement by about 5 years. By 1974, I was one of "jiggling" girls. I did own a few torpedo bras though, simply because I thought they made my teen age chest look bigger <g>

Oh gosh, do I ever remember them! I was recollecting the other day that I wore them in college--all the time--classes, dates, etc. How DID we do that?! Do you remember when you stopped wearing a full slip? I was in college when I graduated to a half slip and never looked back. (Now it's NO slips.)

The things we did. Yikes.

Pantyhose were my salvation. I remember charging them in scads to my Mom's Dayton's card.

Oh my...memories of helping my Mother lace her corsets up in England in the 1950's.

When I moved to Canada in 1967 I was appalled to find that Calgary, Alberta was about 3 years behind London, England and all the girls were still wearing stockings!
For the next 2-3 years my Mum used to send me Pantyhose from England.
I also arrived with mini-skirts and had to quickly buy a couple of longer old-fashioned skirts for work.

What was a Torpedo Bra??.....Sorry to the men reading this but a gal's just got to know!

A bra with stitched concentric circles, ending in a sharp point. I had at least one. Edited to add: my grandmother wore a zippered girdle most of her life. Neglus thinks she wore it until she was bed-bound (she lived to 101). I think, since it wasn't a panty girdle, she wore it until she discovered polyester pantsuits and gave up dresses entirely.

Oh..now I know what you mean. I had one and went dancing ( we still did some ballroom dancing then) and was frightened to get too close to the 'boy' because if our chests touched then the bra dented at the end and then came out with a loud pop.
I am sitting here giggling at the memory.
I was 4'9" tall and about a 28AA at the time!

I remember, as a child, watching my mother wiggle into a girdle. It was always a very humorous event for me. I'd have to estimate mid-1960s when she was still wearing dresses every day. She even had a dress for housecleaning! By the early 70s, pantsuits came into fashion and those girdles went out the window.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes. But the half-wit remains a half-wit, and the emperor remains an emperor.

Like otteropp, I grew up in England, and girdles were called corsets. My mother was 4.10 at her tallest, and I guess never more than 85 lbs, but she wore her corset every day. A woman would arrive and do a long measuring procedure, then a couple of weeks later, this pink contraption arrived with laces, lots of hooks and bone stays.

The old one was then worn in the mornings to do the housework, and the new one was changed into after lunch, when the whole outfit was changed, even stockings.

My mother was born in 1907, and passed away aged 90, and she NEVER wore a pair of pants in her whole like. In the 50's I rememeber her wearing her pretty dresses, long gloves and hats etc. My father always wore a shirt, tie and suit, even on the beach! No, they were not rich, just the opposite, but always looked well dressed.

I think the clothing was very restrictive then, hugging my mum was like hugging someone in a full body cast. But I think that today we have gone the other way with jeans and sloppy sweaters, (yes, I am guilty). I love looking back at the pictures of my family in their dressy clothes, at least in those days you knew whether they were male or female when they were walking down the street.

Ah...but Amber the men at least used to roll up their trousers at the bottom when they were on the beach so that they could paddle!
Some like my bald brother-in-law used to take their white hankie and tie a knot in each corner and put it on their heads to keep from getting a sunburnt bald spot.

My Mum was born also in 1907 but I have photos of her when I was about 1-2 yrs old..so 1945-46 wearing pin striped pants and with her hair done Katherine Hepburn style.
