I used to buy and sell on eBay... now I don't do either.
Ebay forgets that a lot of their sellers are also buyers too... when you spread so much distaste amongst such a large group... it's no wonder sales take a hit. I used to recommend eBay to everyone I met... haven't done that in years!
If they want to succeed in todays marketplace they should:
1) Forget about competing with Amazon. Let them have the new merchandise sellers. Instead concentrate on going back to the roots of eBay where you can find unique, rare, used merchandise of good quality at discounted rates. Bring back the fun element of auctions... and even improve them by extending the auction if bids are actively being placed (to avoid last minute sniping).
2) Start understanding that sellers don't work for them. They are supposed to be providing a service for their sellers. They need to bring in some customer support specialists and start restructuring their company to find out how they can best serve their own customers (the sellers) and not how to appease their customers customers.
3) Restructure pricing to be more competitive with the current market. Prices everywhere else for internet service providers has become more economical throughout the years. Ebay has gone in the reverse direction. They need to stop paying high-priced salaries to incompetent executives that don't do anything but break the things that actually did work... and spread the savings amongst their customers via reduced rates.
Of course... none of those are going to actually happen... so, my recommendation.. is most sellers should be putting their hard-work into making their own websites work... and not trying to hang on to what-once-was-great. The reality is that eBay is never going to be the profitable place it once was for sellers.

Ebay fee is a way of keeping junks out of Ebay,if fee is low or free, you will see more junks than we have now.
Take a look at the other auction sites, sellers just park their items there for years and years!
How many times have you heard someone said -it aint worth listing on Ebay?

Store Sales are markedly down. You have to run auctions and FP30's if you want to sell anything at all. I think the new item page without the 12 related items from same seller at the bottom has a lot to do with decreased store sales. I can't understand why they would want to discontinue that of all things!

The new rating system hasn't started yet (at least I don't think it has)
I think it's just the end of the summer and the economy.

Of course the economy and the season have a lot to do with slowed sales but I have no doubt that ebay's constant playing with search is a major factor.

Sales is down everywhere .
Nope not true... my site has had increases in sales of anywhere between 114% to 208% every single month of 2009 as compared to the previous year. Plus... my expenses have gone DOWN instead of up... because my service providers want to remain competitive in the marketplace.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what the holiday season has to bring! I expect it will be a good year for us!

As usual with these postings, there is no mention of what merchandise is (or is not) selling. Just the usual assumption that eBay exists in some alternate universe where seasonal activity, economic situation, etc. should have no effect on business.
I just returned from one of my rare trips to the mall. I hope the retailers are not expecting a great back to school surge. There was almost no business going on there. I needed a part for my weed trimmer, and picked up some clothing I didn't really need - 95.00 jacket down to 14.99, Land's End shirt down to 12.49 from 38.50. And the stores were full of these desperation sales (and these weren't even the best deals I saw).
I went up to Maine for a few days, and stopped in Freeport (the outlet town of Maine and home to L.L. Bean). Usually you cannot find a parking place in town this time of year. It was dead. Lots of empty retail space (and they just added some more that I doubt will fill for a long, long time).
So can you explain why you think e-tailing should be immune?

One more thing I forgot about: The credit card companies went wild cutting customer credit limits over the past couple of months. People now close to the new limits will cut back (as well as some people who aren't near limits, but throughly ticked off at the CC companies for doing this).

Damariscotta: I sell postcards and I think the OP might also sell postcards.
I have about 10,700 postcards in my store. I run about 250 auctions and 300 FP30 and the rest are store items.
Business picked up a little. I have sold 26 items in the past 24 hours - formats broken down as follows: 13 auctions, 6 FP30 and 7 store (4 of the store items were add-ons to an auction order). I used to sell 50% store and 50% auction before FP30 and search changes.

If you have store-only items and are not linking core listings to your store items, then you are totally vulnerable to eBay stores "faucet" effect. You should see a gush effect shortly after your GTC renew and another, smaller gush when they are near the end of a 30-day run. The formula I've been using for postcard core sales to support an 11,000 item store would be running 300+ auctions or 1,200 core 30-day buy it now - all with links to similar items in your store.

hwahwa, it has been that way for quite sometime. Your stores items rarely make it to 1st page search so you need to run auctions or fixed price and then direct customers to your store in the listing.
Having an ebay store is like renting a storage shed. No one will know you are there unless you pay extra to advertise.

Same with Yahoo shop, call it a Yahoo shed.
I signed up for Google Ad words a few days ago,to get on the first page ,one has to pay $1 per click, and I sign up for 50 cents,so no traffic,no click either.
