Hate to bother you all with this but when is it time to let go. She had an ultra sound yesterday and the vet says she has tumors on her liver, heart and spleen. Nothing they can do except for me to give her anything she wants to eat (chicken and rice), etc. and make her comfortable. She is very restless and has heavy breathing. Vet says when she gets weak or collapses to bring her in and they will put her to sleep. One minutes she is very lethargic and then she alert and wagging her tail and running out to the dog run. Any suggestions?? Neva

So sorry Neva, you must be so sad. I have lost pets, and I know how much it hurts to lose them. I hope you will know when it's time to end her suffering.

Neva, I can feel your pain! This past February we had to make the decision for our Lacy, the light of our life. She was such a sweet, brave girl. Two years ago she was diagnosed with Cushings Disease. She was doing really well after very serious surgery and with medication when we discovered that she had a cancerous tumor in her mouth. There was nothing that could be done to help. It was so hard to let her go but we are sure it was the right decision.

After all these months we still talk about her with tears. I know you will do what is best for Lucky Dog and always hold her in your heart.

I'm very sorry to hear about your dog, you will know when the time is right to put her to rest. Our dog bonse was 14yrs old and very sick, she lasted for almost a year after the vet told us to put her down.

Last Month my daughter had to make that decision because I was no help. What happened was she stopped eating and then she stopped drinking but she was holding on and not giving in to her sickness. Then she just sat down and would not get up, so my daughter called the vet, he came to our house the next morning and put her to sleep in her bed.

This is our bones with my grandson the morning we were waiting for the vet.
Neva, you will just know when the time is right.

Thanks for all your kind words. Lucky is maybe 15. She was a rescue so never knew exactly how old she was, but when I first got her I took her to the vet and he said she was 4 or 5. Will just hang in there until I feel the time is right, I guess.

I prayed that I would know the right time for my golden retriever Sunshine. Ten years ago, the signs were clear, he collapsed and was unable to get up. Prior to that, he had his bad days but definite moments of joy. I hope your signs are as clear. I still miss him ever so much.

I've been there as well and feel your pain.
When you feel it's time, it may help to have a friend go with you.

Lacy was 13 and still loved to go for walks and would wag her tail when the vet came into the exam room right to the end. We had no idea there was a tumor in her mouth till it started to bleed. I fed her soft dog food by hand for three weeks but when she had trouble even with that and the bleeding would not stop we had to admit that we were hanging on for ourselves, we did not want to let her go, and not for her. The vet was also in tears when we made the decision.

Even though their loss is heartbreaking, this is the 3rd dog we have had in our 40 year marriage, they bring so much joy to life that we are willing to accept the pain that comes with their shorter life span.

Jack and I will be thinking about Lucky Dog and your family.

When a pet's quality of life has deteriorated to the point where they are suffering most of the time, it's time to let them go. Not an easy thing to do, but it's the greatest gift we can give them in return for their years of selfless devotion to us.

Our bones will always be with us and we still cry over her being gone.

But my daughter wanted to get another dog so she went to a shelter and bought this sweet looking puppy, she was told that it was a hound mix. We wanted a dog which was medium size like bonse was but we don't think that's what she got. lol

We feel she is part Mastiff and Great Dane.. Even our Vet said she is going to be a big dog.
Here is CoCo at 3 months old, She is already 20lbs.

What a cutie! But.. Look at the size of the feet! Isn't that an indication of the eventual size.

Thank you niel and photosensitive

I will post pictures as she grows. We got her when she was 2mths old and 9lbs she is now 3 1/2 months old and 20 lbs. She seems to be growing kinda quickly...lol

I'm just hoping she is not going to be real big.

But as photosensitive said, See her paws, that's just what the vet said.

This is my first time training a puppy my daughter trained bones from a puppy so this is all new to me.

I'm doing lots of reading on how to train a puppy but the hardest part is stopping her from chewing my leather chairs in the kitchen, she just don't want to stop, She has lots of toys to chew on but she just loves my chairs..lol

Well I am sorry to bring such sad memories to you wonderful E.O.ers and cause you to recall your losses. Thanks for the pix and advice.

Lucky had a bad night, coughing and gagging. This morning she wouldn't eat or drink water. Had chicken and rice for her but no go.

I called the vet, Saturday morning as they close at noon, and took her over. She was so weak she couldn't even jump in the van and had to pick her up. Usually she loves to go and rides in the back seat and looks at the scenery.

As my daughter says, she is now doing her favorite thing, going to the beach and chasing seagulls and sandpipers.

Breaks your heart but this is part of owning a beloved pet.

love ya all

I know it is hard but I am sure that you gave her a good life and letting her go was the ultimate act of love. Treasure the good memories and hold her in your heart.

My younger sister (not Neglus)had to put down her 14+ year old cat today. She loved him deeply and although he didn't exhibit any signs until now, the vet was convinced that tumors were so prevalent that intervention would be futile. She has gone through extraordinary steps and expense to save younger rescue cats My heart goes out to her as she did the right thing to end the suffering of an old friend.

We had to say good bye to our dog a year ago. She had the same thing...cancer tumors on her liver, kidneys and spleen.
Their lives are not measured in time, but in grace...in the joy with which they are lived, and in the love that they leave behind.
God Bless

Makes me wonder. Was it the dog food? Was it the Front Line? What caused the tumors? A month before the vet took off a large tumor (non cancer) just inside her back leg/groin area. Also small growth on her eyelid. I knew something was wrong about 6 months ago but the vet kept saying she was OK, just old as she was 15 or 16. She was a rescue so I never did know how old she was.

Thanks for your kind comments EOers.

Neva, As long as Lucky is eatimg and drinking keep her with you.

Most of us on VD know the unbearable pain of losing a pet and hope we can help each other through this sad time. We know how you feel, thoughts and prayers are with you and Lucky.

I can't tell you how sorry I am to hear this news and it breaks my heart to know you are hurting so much.

Jane
