Hey - I haven't really wanted to post this but now I think I want all prayer lines open.
My DH had a heart attack Thursday morning 3am. He woke me up and said he had really bad heartburn and we were hoping it was like the episode I had a while ago. I rushed him to the ER because he was about to pass out and after they gave him everything they could including Morphine, they realized it was a heart attack.
He's having a triple bypass tomorrow - Tuesday morning at 6am. I'm spending the night at the hospital tonight and won't be home until sometime tomorrow. You don't have to comment - I know the power of VD All positive thoughts are welcome.
Thanks in advance

And I too will be sending good thoughts and prayers your way. Do be confident in the skill of the surgeon(s), knowing that many positive strides have been made in these procedures. As you're sending good thoughts to the surgery itself, send gratitude thoughts for how much you appreciate their skill and how very fortunate we all are to be living in these times, with the strides made in medicine.

I pray that the surgery is successful. Do let us know. You must be so glad that you got him to the hospital, a lot of people leave it too late. Never ignore symptoms, better to find it's nothing, than to miss a heart attack or stroke.

Thank you all
I just got back from the hospital and while he still had his breathing tube in (it will be out in a few hours) he looked better than I expected and was able to respond when we spoke to him, even though he was heavily sedated. He knew we were there and when I told him I was going to run home for a little while and let the dogs out he nodded.
The Dr said they did 4 bypasses - one more than we expected. But that his heart looked good - the Nurses had all told him that his heart probably did sustain damage and they couldn't tell until he did the Echo Cardiogram - but that the Dr might could tell how it looked - so I know he wanted me to ask.
I just want to tell you all - even though he thought it was *just heartburn* a nurse told me many years ago when I was doing Home Health Care - that if somebody is in distress and they point their finger to the CENTER of the chest that 99 times out of 100 it's a heart attack. And that's what he did. When I saw him do that I knew we had to go right then (he didn't want me to call an ambulance but I should have)
Thanks again

Hello,
Your always better off calling for the ambulance, as even if you live really close to the hospital you won't get treated as quickly when you walk in the door yourself, regardless of the problem, as you would if you came by ambulance. (not to mention they can treat on the way, which in this case would have been nitroglycerin pills under the tongue.)
Glad to hear things are progressing in a positive light. All the best for you and yours.

After my Dad's bypass surgery, he proudly proclaimed he was a member of the "zipper society" (the scar on his chest). He was feeling tired and cold before the surgery and felt immensely better afterwards. I hope your hubby has a similar experience.

Terry had a setback.. I went up to visit and they rushed him back to surgery - he had a leaking artery. Just got home - his blood pressure was up but they had to reintubate him. (thing down the throat) His surgeon had been calling keeping an eye on him and they decided to go back in. His blood pressure got dangerously low while I was there. The kids all came back up and we waited - it didn't take 30 minutes for them to fix it. He will be in ICU an extra day.
Oh - and they said in the ER the first night that I should have given him an aspirin at home if I suspected it was heart related. I *knew* that but forgot it. So - remember to give an aspirin. I'm not sure but I think you're supposed to let it dissolve in your mouth. I'll have to read up on it - too tired now - up almost 24 hours.....

I hope all continues to go well for you and your DH.
I carry an aspirin in a little pill container in my purse--at all times--knowing it could save a life. I've showed my husband where it is in my purse so he could find it quickly if needed. This is such a small thing to do, but believe me I feel better knowing I have one of those with me.
When I worked in a large hospital, I learned that a common side effect for heart patients is temporary sadness/depression. We shouldn't be surprised if we see this in loved ones or friends. (Just a tip, here. Your husband may not experience this.)

To summarize the article linked to above regarding chewing or swallowing aspirin:
"By all three measurements, chewed aspirin worked fastest. It needed only five minutes to reduce TxB2 concentrations by 50%; the Alka-Seltzer took almost 8 minutes, and the swallowed tablet took 12 minutes. Similarly, it took 14 minutes for the chewed tablet to produce maximal platelet inhibition; it took Alka-Seltzer 16 minutes and the swallowed tablet 26 minutes (see graph below). "

Chris

I don't know about the US, but Canada is introducing a dissolvable asprin to put under your tongue if needed. It is suggested to keep some on your nightstand.

Oh he was MUCH better today. They had him sitting up in a chair and he's going to the regular floor tomorrow where he is supposed to be walking. I think it's all down hill from here. He remembers everything that happened last night for the most part but wasn't aware his blood pressure had dropped to 54 over 30 which is when I freaked out.
Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts. We can kind of let this thread go - I just also wanted to make everyone aware that heartburn is not always heartburn and about the aspirin. I sure wish we had the dissolvable aspirin here - I haven't heard of that.

GG...We just returned this evening from a week away and I saw this thread. I am so glad that your husband is getting better. As others have said, make sure that you get some rest too because you will have a busy time once Terry returns home.
Three years ago my DH called an ambulance for me as I was having severe chest pain. The first thing the Paramedics asked was if I was allergic to asprin and then made me chew a Baby aspirin before they even took my blood pressure.
I call that my 'pretend' heart attack because the pain was caused by a spasm in the oesophagus and apparently the symptoms mimic a heart attack. Very painful but not life-threatening.
I now always keep an aspirin in my purse too along with an antihistamine tablet that can be given as first aid in the same way to anyone suffering a severe allergic reaction to get things settled a little before medical help arrives.
Take care GG and we are sending hugs from Vancouver Island.

YAY he's home today. Had an episode night before last @ 4am in the hospital where his heart starting beating 140 but they said that was normal for recovery - they gave him Meds and it returned to normal. May or may not happen again. (Let's hope not - that would mean another rush to the ER)
I don't know of anything that would have prevented this or keep it from happening to anyone else here. Their key words were "don't smoke" "avoid stress" "eat healthy" and "exercise"
He pretty much did all of the above. He used to smoke about 15 years ago. He stresses about his golf game. He exercised every day and we live in the South - so Paula Deen ought to be having a heart attack any day. That's stressing ME out - having to learn new things and ways to cook. Fried fish, fried pork chops, fried okra. No we DON'T eat fried foods every day!! But we do eat it at least once a week or so.
No cheese. No sour creme. No whole milk. etc etc.
