I have hundreds of photos in which the background has to be removed so that the object in the foreground is all that remains.

Here's an example:

You take this...

And turn it into this...

There are several different ways. Most people like to use Photoshop, which has a background eraser function, but other editing software can do it too.

I have an old version of Photoshop, so I enlarge the image to 200 or 300 percent and use the Trace tool to carefully trace all the way around the foreground. It only takes a minute or two for a simple object. Complex ones (like the earrings above with all that filigree work) take longer.

I no longer have time to do it (not that I ever really did) and am more than willing to pay a home worker to create the finished pictures for me. This is an ongoing project.

I remember you mentioned once you have to hang them on the cup to make it straight,so you must have tons of these earrings hanging from the edge of cup.
What I did was use the professional non glaring paper as background and then use bright/contrast feature to rid the background, sometimes it looks awful.

I guess I'm weird--but I think the earrings look really nice hanging on the cup. Are you positive you need the background removed?

Not weird - unless I am too. I think the earrings look nicer on the cup. On the cleared picture it looks as if the ear hanger thingies are too short and they look stiff. Oh well, they are very pretty earrings either way.!

I know someone who maybe interested. I'll email her and let you know.
I used to watch someone who sold nothing but Danish Modern furniture and they did their photos this way. It really made it pop.

I overwhelmingly prefer the white background better - I just don't understand why you don't photograph it on the white background in the first place - or on a standard photographic neutral gray background that can be edited easier maybe?

glassgrl: We do photo them on light backgrounds now, but there are a lot of old pictures that need editing.

The teacups were nice. My mother sent me 3 dozen cup-and-saucer sets she'd collected over the years. But I got many negative comments about the photos. Amazon requires products to have a white background.

If you like what you see send me a message through ebay. Thanks.

Very nice, mucha bella. From my little experience editing out backgrounds, the lacy petals in the upper portion of the earrings look particularly challenging.

Not so much challenging as time-consuming.

Of course, the secret to doing earrings is that you only do one, copy/paste it and flip the copy horizontally so you have a pair.

I'll let you guys in on a little secret...

In Photoshop, use the paintbrush tool in color dodge mode. Set the flow and opacity to about 80% and trace around the object you are editing. I use this method to clean up the rough areas after using the magic wand tool. Once you get the technique down it is a breeze.

The white background sometimes make an item look cheap,on ebay it seems a dark or black background works best, since buyers are always looking for vintage or antique items,a white background makes a new item looks new and for vintage/antique items,it shows the flaws too well.
Dont they have those things you can hang the earrings on like they use in jewelry store?

Say you have an item which is vintage or antique but has been hiding in a box and never displayed, bidder sometimes get angry because it cant be old if it looks like new.
See when I first saw Fluffy earrings,I get angry because it looks new,all that glitters is not gold,it is brass!

Why do you give up, glassgrl?

Hwahwa's comment was made to illustrate how an appropriate background can serve to compliment a product whether it's new earrings or a vintage item. I agree with her that a white background would enhance new jewelry. In fact, there is a 2.5 million dollar pair of ear rings on Ebay now, photographed on a white background.

For jewelry I prefer a photo on a white background or a graduated white to light grey background with very light shadows. For less expensive jewelry, Fluff's teacup background is very attractive.

HwaHwa was angry because Fluff's earrings looked like new. They ARE new... What is so hard to understand?

Why not just inform Hwahwa that Fluff''s earrings are in fact, new?

My comment was in response to the quote that was taken out of context by Glassgrl.

I love the eBay Outlook. This is just like going home for the holidays, without the nasty homemade cranberry-orange relish.
