I have a raging ear infection in right ear--pain and throbbing until I could get meds, and now dizziness and weakness. This is a first for me, in my long life. My right ear feels like it's plugged up. The pain is gone now, thank goodness, and of course I have no idea in the world how this could have happened. . . . Adele

Adele,
I had both ears plugged. First my right for about 2 weeks, followed by a short unplugging, then my left for 5 or 6 weeks. 2 trips to the doctor and rounds of meds that didn't help. Finally went away in it's own. Never had any pain though, just pressure.
I keep remembering that doctors have a license to PRACTICE.

Did you go swimming?or wash your hair?
or poke something in your ear?
or go to exotic places?
or travel on airplane?
or when was the last time you have your ear wax removed?

I sure hope you are feeling better.
So many things can cause ear infections and they are downright nasty.
Has a Dr. looked right into the ear to make sure there is not a foreign body in there. (and I don't mean a real hunk from Brazil)!!!
I have not had one for many years but remember the pain well and my son used to get them all the time when he was a little guy.
There is a new study came out recently that now the thinking for children's ear infections is that they clear up quicker without antibiotics.

Hwahwa: None of those things you mentioned happened to me, except to respond that I've only had earwax removed once in my whole life--at least 20 years ago. Only event we went to on the coast was an Eddie Izzard show (fantastic) in a 7,500-seat auditorium in LA. A fellow behind me had the most piercing whistle I've ever heard, and I kept covering my ears but usually too late to avoid "hearing" the entire whistle. It was very annoying, and I'm wondering if loud sounds could trigger an ear infection?

I know I had an ear infection once from swimming and doc gave me cipro and it went away.
Years later I was on a plane and when it started descending,I felt very uncomfortable in my ears, when the plane finally landed,I did not feel right,I lost my balance,I felt just sick!
I went to see an ear doctor and he removed some earwax

You should go see an ear doctor !
I know a woman who travelled to Brazil on business, came back and have a bad earache,it turned out to be a bacterial infection not in her ears but on her face.
Piercing sound could have disturbed something in your ears!
Once I was on a plane going to Denver, when the plane was descending,my ears started to hurt, when we landed,I lost my balance and felt nauseated ,I lost my appetite,I felt dehydrated and just overall not well during the whole visit.
If you have not removed any wax for many years, you may have a lot of wax builtup!

Go have the wax removed! It's painless and you'd really be surprised at what the doc pulls out of there! It's not only wax. Dead skin from your ears also gets clogged up in there.
It could have been caused by soap and water getting in there and stuck in whatever wax buildup you had. Believe it or not, I make a habit of rinsing out my ears after I wash my hair!! Whatever soap is in the canal eventually will dry and flake into your drum area!
Hope you're feeling better!!!!

Adele, are you sure it is an infection? Loud noises can cause temporary and even permanent ear damage.
I attended a Santana concert years ago and suffered a great deal of pain and hearing loss that lasted for weeks. We were seated in the company's reserved box which was only about 50 ft from the stage. The pain started during a drum solo. It was the most horrible pain to endure and my hearing in my right ear did not return for weeks. To this day I still have a contant ringing in that ear.
If it is an ear infection, sometimes a warm compress applied behind the ear will help with the swelling and pain. Do not put anything inside the ear unless recommended by your doctor.
I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Thanks, all. We're waiting to hear from our dr. about further actions, including the idea of removing the plugged earwax etc.
Lt.Ray: I have to say our culture has produced one or two generations now of hearing-impaired people. I don't think they have any idea how loud their music really is.

I've had a similar ear problem starting about a week ago (ears OK now). Trying to clean ears seem to make things worse. We had rain everyday for a week before that, which may have been a factor.

Mullein-Garic eardrops by herbpharm
I get swimmers ear Oris menits something they call it and I used prescripton for an ongoing problem of 15 years. But as an herbalist I tried this after going to the dr. that prescibed two different eardrops recently as the one worked for a week and then cam back so I got the second prescription and it worked.
But got swimmers ear again and then decided to risk it by going to these herb pharm ear drops.
They worked as it was knocked out in 3 days if caught early on as that is the secret after the first one or two days it will go full blown and ear will swell shut then hurt for a week or two and one time about 10 years last 2 months.
Next time I will reuse the herbpharm drops as what I learn from herbology is that western medicine shields problems temporary as like my ear it constantly comes back to the same spot if my ear gets wet inside. So maybe I cured it for good as its been almost 2 months now. Hope this helps

Recently on Dr. Oz a lady claimed that when she gets an ear infection, she cuts open a bud of garlic and inserts it in her ear. She then puts a bandaid on to hold it into place. She sleeps like that overnight and when she gets up, the infection is gone. Dr. Oz agreed that it can work.
