Well, I finally upgraded cameras. I decided to go with a Canon G11. I got a good deal on it at $425 including a 2GB card from Best Buy as part of their President's Day sale and Rewards Card Bonus.

Before deciding to keep it, I tested it head to head against my Sony DSC-H9.

I set each camera exactly the same for 3 series of photographs. Since I use the camera primarily to photograph items for ebay and our website, I figured I would start there.

I set each camera to Manual with Auto White Balance and Auto Focus, weighted metering. I didn't have time to get too far into it, but My series of settings were:

ISO Speed Aperature

100 60 4.0
400 100 4.0
100 60 2.8

One gripe I had about the Sony was the inconsistent White Balance. I could never get it consistently right. My photos would end up with blue/green tones frequently, which I would have to waste time going through and editing. The other gripe I had was that the view finder made photos look great, but when I got it on the computer it looked terrible. The Sony is also quite bulky (think small SLR). There were other smaller issues I had with it, like the memory card being Sony MMC Pro and not having RAW features.

In the end, the Canon outperformed the Sony in color reproduction and overall quality. Clarity was very good on both cameras. The Sony has a Carl Zeiss lens with 2.7 aperature while the Canon has a Canon lens with 2.8 aperature. Both are glass (very important if you don't want those ugly flare circles you get with plastic lenses).

What I like about the Canon is the external control dials. To control ISO and Saturation, both are click dial oriented. It also has built in flash with a hot shoe as well. Both cameras feature a movable screen and each are different. The Sony allowed me to pull the screen away from the camera and adjust up and down (no flipping to see it from the front). While the Canon flips sideways and up and down allowing the screen to be seen from the front of the camera. This is helpful when framing for group photos.

The Sony Dials are a bit more user friendly and not as sensitive as the Canon, but I've been using it for 3 years now, while I've had the Canon for less than a day.

The Canon will be better for travel, and even using as a good concert camera (small enough to fit in a jacket and good features). The Canon is also a full metal body.

If you want a great camera, the G11 is worth checking out... if you want a smaller version I recommend the Canon S90. That one is more compact and has a 2.0 aperature, even better than the g11. For me it was too small to use in a work environment, however I considered buying it and using a monopod grip attached at the tripod mount.

I should add, I did no editing to the photos. Just uploaded them.

Both look good to me. Set against Vendio's pure white backround, I do see the bluish green tone in background of Sony shots but also see a rose/violet/gray background in the Canon shots. Do you use filters?
