Which auction house sold your lamp for you?
I am thinking of sending a Paul Evans coffee table to auction - any advice?

It was Wrights. Their website is wright20.com.
Do you have any pics of it? I'm just curious to see what you have. I have sold a few coffee tables by him. I had a 2 piece set recently that had a twisted metal base with glass top. Those are not the most popular... but some of his items are worth a bunch of money.

I don't know if it matters or not but the top is slate and has PE with different numbers written on the back of the slate.
Shagmidmod - was that the only auction house you contacted?
I have contacted Phillips and Wright20 so I guess I'll just wait and see what they say.
Thanks

nice table and one of the better ones I've seen.
Wrights may take a few days to contact you. I have an email to them as well regarding some wood art panels a customer of ours have.
Here is a link to one at Wrights that went for over $1000. Some of the cabinets go for close to $100,000... or at least did before the recession.

That same table that Wright sold for a $1000 is currently on 1st Dibs for $5500 and $9500 (there are 2 of them).
Makes you wonder what they are really able to sell them for on 1st Dibs.
Rago sold the exact table that I have but I couldn't see the final price or how long ago it was.

1st dibs is terrible. The pricing is so outrageous and I know for a fact that they do this for one reason... they are fishing for over-inflated offers.
I have had many pieces that were on 1stdibs.com and generally our sale price falls somewhere between 10-40% of their price.
They prey on people who look at something priced at $5000 and offers $4000 thinking it is a lowball offer when it isn't. Next thing you know, 1stdibs dealer sells the item for double the value. There are some things at 1stdibs that were mass produced and way over inflated, then there are true rarities and one of a kinds where dealers have no idea what to price them at so they go high.
I can't really blame them for doing it... if you don't ask a high price you're not going to get a high offer.

I sold 2 chairs to someone on 1st Dibs for $700. Of course I had to list every little flaw. He listed them for $3200 and never even touched them. Said they were in excellent condition but there were tears in the seats. I guess they can get away something like that but we can't on ebay.
I got the hammer price on the Rago auction for this table and it was $3250.
Wright contacted me and gave an estimate of $3000 to $5000 for this table. I would need to get it to them by April 10. They said that the market for Evan has cooled a bit in the last two years. I would have to say that could just be the economy.
I guess I'll go for it as I don't think I could sell it for over $1500 on ebay???

Well this could have ended as a horror story but it ended well.
I checked right after the auction and to my shock the table didn't sell. One somewhat like it sold for $1265. Mine had a $1800 reserve on it so I guess that why they pick the other one.
I did some calculations on this particular auction and over 70 percent of the lots went unsold. Something wrong there!!! I guess that's always the chance you take.
Good news - Wright put it on there website and it sold within a few weeks. It sold for $3800 but they took 30%. Still better than if it had sold for the reserve or what I could have sold it for on ebay.
I guess I will do it again if I get the chance.

Technically you pay 30% anyways even at auction. Here is how...
If you sell a piece for $1000, the buyer pays 25% buyers premium or $250 to make the final price $1250.
You pay 10% based on the total price of $1250.
Your 10% rate is $125 + the $250 buyers premium which equals $375 which is exactly 30% of $1250.
In essence, Wrights did you a BIG favor by selling it through their site because it went for more than the auction reserve.
Congrats!

I agree - I'm very glad it didn't sell at auction. Wright didn't charge me the $150 for non-sold items or the $75 for photographs so that was another break as well.
They really have a nice website and work with 1st Dibs as well so maybe it's better to go that way than the auction route. I guess you just never know.
It did, however, take forever to get the check or maybe it just seem like forever.

They issue checks 30 days after. I know it felt like eternity for us as well... but the reality is that it was well worth the wait for us too.
