I don't know if there is any truth to the rumor that JD (John Donahoe) is leaving, but thought I'd post here in case anybody missed the buzzzzz...his wife, Eileen Donahoe, has been confirmed as US Ambassador to UN Human Rights Council - and I think it's based in Geneva Switzerland. So .....maybe it's true.

thanks for the information.
I hope Mr. and Mrs. Donahue take Ebay's marketing team with them to Switzerland.

We can only hope....although if he leaves we may get worse!

His house in Stinson Beach is also listed for sale and it seems he also sold a big lot of his eBay shares recently.

I discounted the story as pure rumour when I first read about it but now I am beginning to think possibly that 'where there's smoke there's fire'.

Men with responsible jobs do not quit their jobs just because their spouse is relocating.

Wives are expected to drop everything when a husband gets a job, why shouldn't a husband support his wife's good fortune?

Hwa Hwa , Here's the "real world" 2010, High-powered couples will go to the job/location with the most prestige. Achieving top status in the corporate world might not measure up to the prestige of a top government (ask Meg) or diplomatic job. If I were J.D., I'd leave ASAP before the stench of the one who destroyed eBay caught up with me!

Meg is different.
Would JeFF Immelt of GE quit his job because his wife has been asked to head up the design dept of the House of Channel in Paris?
Or Lee Iaccoca quit his job while running Chrysler if his wife is offered a job as top chef with the Vatican?
JD may be quitting or rather asked to resign,Meg is a billionaire thanks to all those Ebay stock options she exercised but I doubt JD is.
Ebay has gone nowhere since Pierre turned the reins over to Meg,Meg with her Harvard education and Toys'r us business experience made plenty of boo-boo at Ebay-she bought Butterfield and Butterfield to co-ordinate the Great collectibles or is it called Great Collections and it bombed.
Joint efforts with Wells Fargo to launch Billpoint is a flop, anyone remembers Billpoint?
Then going to the insurance underwriters and asked for a group policy for Ebay powersellers only to be laughed at ?
THen there is EBAY A GO GO and SKYE?
JD I heard is from Mckinsy,a high power consulting firm for the Fortune 500.
Neither of them make good guerilla leaders and I bet neither of them know how to sell on Ebay!
The best thing Meg has done is buying Paypal.

HwaHwa, which of the people you mentioned also have wives in high-powered positions?

Just because wife has a high powered job does not mean a man would quit his job and join her.
What drives a man to reach the top is what keeps him in his job.
same can be said of women, there are a few women CEO these days.
Pmelcher.
Women who are homemakers, raising a family or have no desire to work outside the home follow the husband wherever he goes, this is the traditional way.
I have seen Indian IT workers who brought their wife and kid along, wife stayed in the hotel room and watched TV all day until hubby comes home and they go out to dinner.
Wives of traditional society do not complain of their husbands spending so much time away to make a living,as long as he is not having another woman.
But wives in western society want more, they want quality time, they want equal partnership, they want their freedom as well.
Multinational oil companies sent their employees all over the world, eventually wives get fed up of moving to another exotic land exotic culture and divorce their hubbies and return home, wherever home is.
Do you know in Egypt, western women have to take their male servant along when grocery shopping, they can shop as much as they want, but they cant pay at the cashier, only a man can!

True - just because a Top Exec's spouse may get appointed to a top level job in a distant location, it does not necessarily mean that he/she will quit his/her job to come along but it MAY be that he/she is ready for a change, tired of the rat race, can see the writing on the wall ... whatever. I am sure JD is a millionaire several times over. He recently sold a big chunk of eBay stock - doubt that money is an issue. He came from Bain (as did Meg). I for one, was surprised to learn that the Donahoes are Democrats - unlike his mentor Meg

when you get to that level, often it is more about networking your way up the chain. if you can shake hands up the food chain, the better you are. i guarantee you that both are opportunists and will go where the money and prestige are.

as for JD, I'd guess he is looking at the bottom line at eBay and may realize it is time to move on to better things. he made his mark, whether for the better or worse depends on if you are a seller or a stockholder.
