Sold a service for 8 (54 pcs) of silverware to a buyer in Japan. Here's her request: To save on shipping forget the box. Divide the set in two and package in two Priority Mail Flat Rate envelopes. Here's the best part, she'll take full responsibility for the items if they don't arrive safely.

LMFAO! Right. She'll take full responsibility. Yup, eBay will buy into that. I quoted her a flat rate box for $43 since it weighs 6 lbs. I'm not putting knives into an envelope. I don't care if she's "had sellers do this a thousand times."

Am I wrong here?

Well, she's insisting and is emailing me through the regular email system. I'm ready just to cancel this whole transaction. It's not worth the $50 I made on it.

Edited to add: What really irks me here is that eBay has created an environment that allows the buyers to dictate how we ship. What's next, price negotiations after they've won the auction?

why wouldn't flat rate envelopes be trackable? Can't you get a tracking number when you print the labels? What does her feedback look like? Strange requests

International Flat Rate Envelopes or Boxes are not trackable. Only regular Priority Mail, which costs more, is trackable.

I don't think I would do it either.

Thanks Bill - good to know about the tracking.

International flat rate boxes are Priority boxes and they are trackable and insured.(Except small and nothing fits into them)

Are there other kinds of flat rate boxes besides Priority?? I've never seen one.

My mistake, I meant the small box, not all boxes.

"231.1 General
Priority Mail International service is considered a parcel stream for mail exchange purposes, with the exception of the flat-rate envelope and the small flat-rate box."

The smallest priority fixed rate box fits a dvd,it is not trackable, but the bigger ones are trackable,I have done this many times.
another way is to ship first class mail and then insure it with U-PIC.

I think she is telling you to put the knifes in a box and put the box in an envelope.

Because it weighs more than 4 lbs, 1st class won't work. I did what she asked, but am not comfortable that the silverware is going to arrive safely. Each envelope contains 4 lbs of silverware. I've got it taped at the seams and now I have to cross my fingers.

I just don't like someone dictating to me how to ship. You wouldn't be able to buy the silverware from Sears and tell them how to ship it to you. Geesh.

Put the knives in boxes, and put the boxes in the envelopes.

I've had sellers in the UK offer to send items in 2 separate Small Packet Airmail envelopes, and I was surprised by how much shipping costs it saved.

The only issue I see is the tracking, but you can still get delivery conformation, I believe.
