I have several silver items to list on eBay, but can anyone tell me how to take a picture without a picture of me taking the picture on it?

You take the picture and back away really fast.
Seriously, it depends on the object. If it's a curved surface, I try and take it from a distance. Preferably while in a darked surrounding with a strong light on the object.
On flat surfaced object, try taking the picture from a side angle till you're out of the picture.
A light box would help.

backing away would actually work, if you've got a tripod and a timer on your camera.
before I had a camera with a timer on it - I sort of "hid" behind a large piece of plain brown cardboard.

The hardest item is a fairly large bell. I tried kneeling on the floor, lying down beside the couch while holding the camera up and other contortions. No easy to actually see what you are taking! I also get pictures of my room etc, but I see other pictures with just clear images of similar items, so I thought there must be some way to do it.

Remember the EBay listing of some silver with the reflection of the naked fella? Now HE should have hid behind a very large piece of cardboard!
Seriously though....We use a light box but always seem to have a reflection of the camera lens. Any remedy for that? I always put a note in my listings about it but would rather eliminate it.

The best pics we have ever taken of silver and glass were outside in natural light with a nice backdrop of flowers or a view.
Amber...I am chuckling at the thought of you rolling around on the floor waving your camera in the air!

It's similar to trying to take a photo of a framed picture in glass. My son-in-law, a photographer at one time, said to use a flash in a dark room. But the problem is that you can't see what you're photographing!

Yes, I remember that picture Otteropp, I don't think that was an accident! It just my face and the camera I'm trying to hide, the pictures just don't look good. I'll try the outside idea.
Roadsmith: Well, when I am rolling round on the floor, I can't see what I'm picturing either.

I am actually all alone in the house at present and giggling like a schoolgirl!
I needed this to perk up my day!

Take the photos at angles that don't show the reflection. I deal with this all the time.

If you have any talent with Photoshop, just take the picture the way you normally would. Then use PS to realistically paste some famous person's picture in the reflection.
"OMG, is that Lindsay Lohan?"
Do a bunch of 'em with different celebrities and watch your auction get a lot of hits.

Oh what a great idea! Fluff, this must have hit your funnybone too!
What with Amber crawling around on the floor, Max backing quickly out of the room, Cherished hiding behind a piece of cardboard and Roadsmith who didn't eat enough carrots when she was a kid and now can't see in the dark....what a group we are!
I am so sorry Amber that you came here with a serious and sensible question and have received such an assortment of ideas...some good some not so good!
Maybe one of them will work for you anyway!

Polarizing Filter would do the trick.

Thanks for all the help and the laughs. I don't think my little digital camera would fit a polarizing filter. Every few weeks I take out the bell and try again, and then put it back in the cabinet.
I needed a laugh. Otteropp, did you see that Canada Post is raising expedited mail prices 20%! You feel like you can't win.

maybe we've all gone mad. Is there an Ebay anonymous group somewhere that we should join?

They have a thing in England called "Midsummer madness", where there are no big news stories, and they publish "fluff". Sorry fluffy, no connection!
