I just had a bidder email me asking what the diameter, length, and weight was for an item. Ironically, this is for Grandfather Clock weights and all of the measurements and weights are very clear noted in the listing. I had to go to the auction and check it because I just couldn't imagine I wouldn't include that info for an item like this. Of course, I was right.
When I respond to a person who obviously didn't read the description, I just refer them back to the listing without providing the info in my response. My concern is that people that ask dumb questions like this will be the first to screw up a transaction or not pay because they don't know how to read an ebay invoice, or use paypal, etc.

This has been a problem for a long time and it's not going away any time soon. Inexpensive PCs such as netbooks have tiny screens. People often don't think to page down to find that information.
Our most frequent complaint is "Why don't you put the dimensions of the earrings on the page?" We do, of course. But it's underneath the photo.
I've hired a programmer to redesign my item page so that the description is to the right of the item photo rather than underneath it. If that doesn't work, I may have to put measurements in the pictures themselves, ugly though that be.

For a long time now, I've had my auction page with the photos at right and the description at left. That way, the buyers can see the photos and also the description without paging down.

I've done the same thing, Roadsmith. I think the buyer will read the description and his eyes will just naturally continue to the right to look at the picture. But...I do still get questions about things I've noted in the description! I generally go ahead and answer BUT will state that the info was listed.

It doesn't look to me that the 3 weights are the same size but you only give the dimensions for one (though the weights are given). Can't see how it would make a difference but perhaps he is looking for very specific sized weights?
From listing:
Measurements:
Length: 12"
Diameter: 1-3/4"
Weight: 6.84 lb / 5.41 lb / 5.43 lb

The ad clearly shows in the photo the weights are the same length as well as in the written dimensions the 3 are 12 inches long and 3 different weights couldn't be clearer. I guess you could dumbie the ad down and write the length 3 times. Excellent presentation Shag.

Your bidder may not be "dumb", just blind.
Reading the copy WITHOUT my glasses, I have a hard time seeing the contrast of the relatively pale and narrow grey or white print against the dark woodgrain background. Light on dark doesn't work for everyone, especially when the dark also has a bit of a pattern to it.

i suppose blind would explain it as well, however, being they are a newbie, i would say they just didn't read the description.
thanks for the compliments alldings.
i use garagesale for mac to create my listings. i really like their templates. one of my favorite features in their templates is the ability to change the photo layout. with this template i can use 10-15 different photo layouts. i can have them at the top, on the right, on the left, one on top, two on top, three on top, i can have them appear as thumbnails, thumbnails with scroll over enlargement, etc.
the best part... i paid $35 one time. no additional fees. i create the listings and launch them directly into ebay. i have had absolutely no problems with their system getting items launched. they constantly update their system to match ebays constant changes. i just got a notice from them that they did a major overhaul and if i want to upgrade to the new system i have to pay $35. Not bad considering I was paying $75 a month to Vendio for two accounts.
there is one small downside, which is the scheduled listings. since it is launched from my computer, i have to schedule it and have my computer on. with my mac, i can go into my calendar and set up a day/time for my computer to automatically turn on and launch the listings. a bit more complicated, but well worth it since i don't have to pay listing/final value fees that vendio charges.

I gather that the weights are identical sizes, just different weights. I think that in this case the bidder was reasonable. The photo of weights at an angle don't make it easy to see size is same, and describing size as "all three x by x" could have made it more apparent. Although I am not a clock person, I would assume that size and weight are important for these, and bidder just wants to confirm before bidding/buying. Would you rather have them assume something wrongly and want to return them?

The photo does make the one on the left look longer than the other two. Nothing personal but I would only take one look and move on anyway. Shipping to me is $34.43 UPS or $54.00 Priority mail for items that could be sent USPS flat rate for $10.20
In todays economy to pay an extra $24.00-$43.00 to ship something would turn me away no matter what the description or photos were.

I received an email from an UK bidder, she is intersted in 2 items each cost 150 plus 4.95 shipping to UK.
She asked if she buy both items (they are made in Great Britain),would I declare them as gifts US$59.95 (60 seems to be the magic number which will trigger customs duty)? She said we work so hard and pay taxes, there is no reason why we have to pay customs duty ?
I told her if her UK customs officer is not asleep at the switch, she will know from the box which comes with the item that it is made in UK and worth more than what is declared as 'gift' on the customs form.
So,this is a case where cheap shipping is not good enough, she wants more. This can only happen on Ebay !

The medium flat rate 13 5/8"x 11 7/8"x 3 3/8" should hold them. I have shipped up to 50 pounds in one of these with plenty of tape.

apparently not the same medium box i have, and it doesn't give adequate packing at less than an inch of space left on each end.
I don't pack items so that they can easily be damaged and then denied a claim b/c I didn't leave 2 inches on each side as required.

2" on each side as required Hmmm I guess that means you can't package anything in the medium priority box since it is only 3 3/8".
They do make 2 sizes of medium flat rate boxes for anyone that cares.

you can pack anything you want into those boxes, however if you have to make an insurance claim on something and your item barely fits in the box, you should expect your claim to be denied. you have to give adequate packing to protect items, otherwise why bother putting anything else in the box. just let it bounce around and hope for the best. imagine that 20 pounds of weights in a tiny box rolling around. lol.

i never suggested that you don't pack items properly.
i was simply stating that there is no difference between packing an item with little room for packing vs. no packing at all (let it bounce and hope for the best) if both are considered inadequate by the post office and the end result is a denied insurance claim.
i had these weights in a box when transporting them home. they are so heavy for their size that it was difficult to carry them, even though they weighed less than 20 pounds.
