I'll admit to having an attraction for oddities...this ceramic item belonged to the late mother of a friend of mine. It's a ceramic fish with a lid. It's marked on the bottom with what looks like "BBK", made in USA and a number. What's your opinion...eBay or garage sale? What would you call it? Covered fish tureen? Ugly fish? Thanks for help and expert opinions...

Well...duhhh! I said I was brain dead...of course this is a cookie jar! Never even crossed my tangled neural network! Thanks! Will give it an eBay try and keep my dorsal fins crossed!

Maybe....maybe not!
In your third photo it looks as though there is a slot in the top of the base where a large ceramic ladle could fit in. Maybe that is the gap between the body & the tail and if so then my theory is wrong.
You don't mention the size of this very ugly fish but it could be a tureen intended for Fish chowder??
I had a really ugly Tureen once that had a bunch of veggies on the top for a handle and it was supposed to be a soup tureen.

I think it is just a table top thing not a soup tureen,it may break if you try to wash it.
Plenty of fish lovers on Ebay, mention the work KOI/CARP and japanese fish collector will come.

I'm still thinking it's a cookie jar. What appears to be a slot for a ladle is actually a rear fin at the end of the body. Thanks all...Might end up being a fun auction.

Reminds me of my ugliest wedding present - a huge brown lidded thing - I guess it was supposed to hold baked potatoes (the brown thing turned out to be a giant baked potato) - it came with a smaller baked potato for sour cream. The handles on the lids were mini-baked potatoes. It was so hideous it was funny. I kept it for years and finally put it out at a garage sale. It was the first thing sold!

I knew it was a cookie jar because I bought one years ago to resell. The inside lip is a clue as to its intended purpose. A tureen would have a smooth edge and would most likely have a slot for the ladle.
Many of the fish tureens listed on ebay are mislabeled and are actually cookie jars.
