I need to send some documents to China. I have a lot of USPS mailing envelopes here; my documents fit into what is called a "legal-size envelope for domestic and international use." It doesn't say "flat-rate" on the envelope.

Is there a difference these days, or does what I have go for the flat-rate cost? I've searched the USPS site and can get no answers (what else is new, huh).

There are regular priority envelopes and there are flat rate priority envelopes, both padded & not. You should weigh the docs & see which would be cheaper.

Lostmymojo: Are you saying the ones I have here are flat-rate? Since it's going to China, I don't want to make a big mistake and have the item lost in some Chinese P.O.

A Flat Rate envelope will specifically state "Flat Rate Envelope" on the face. Anything else is not a Flat Rate envelope.

There are Flat Rate Legal Size Envelopes. Flat Rate will be printed clearly on the envelope.

Ditto what Bill said. You can get flat rate cardboard and bubble envelopes at the post office, but I haven't seen bubble in legal size. There are also Tyvek envelopes which are even larger, but are not FR.

That is what I said, also. There are both regular & flat rate priority envelopes.

Bill is right, flat rate would say flat rate on the envelope.
You did not say what kind of envelopes do you have?express, priority or what?
Priority small box or priority envelopes, flat or variable rates are not trackable ,only express mail envelope, express mail boxes and priority medium and large boxes are trackable online.
I have mailed a 70 pages document to HK using my Ebay Federal express account and get a 30% discount.

I asked our postal clerk today about the legal size priority envelopes I have (not called flat rate). He said they will go flat rate! Weird.

Update on those legal envelopes: I mailed the envelope for $16.95, which is the flat-rate charge to Shanghai. The clerk said I must have one of those "old legal envelopes," and it's okay to send them flat-rate.

Now to check with USPS and see if they have some "new" ones that are actually marked flat-rate.

I dont know what you are shipping but priority envelope is not trackable, only express mail envelope is.
Depends on what the content is,sometimes it is better to pay a few dollars more for tracking.
