eta: Well d*mn... I was changing the title of my thread and somehow I pushed Enter. It should have read, "Pay on Pickup" and Paypal.
Last night I listed a couple of antique furniture pieces for my mom who lives an hour away from me. I stated in the listing I was selling this for my mom and listed the town and zip code she lives in because it was Pick Up Only. I chose "Pay on Pickup" option and stated "Cash Only" in the listing but eBay wouldn't let me list it unless I also chose the Paypal option. I specifically didn't want Paypal because how would I prove it was picked up?
So today I get an email from someone on eBay who is in CA asking if they can pay with Paypal. They also said they would make arrangements with a shipper (my mom lives in AR). This is a legit eBay buyer; they've been on eBay since 2005 and has 100% positive feedback at 163.
How does a seller protect themself in this situation?

Maybe you can add freight as an option and call ebay to find out what is the best way to protect yourself in this transaction.
It's really hard to sell an item with local pick up only unless you live in a major city.
Be sure to have the buyer pay the shipper directly or you will end up paying a FVF for that as well.

You should find out which shipper they will be using. You have to be careful to make sure you are listed as the shipper on any freight bill. This will ensure you will have access to the information if a problem arises. Then make sure the shipper gets a signature upon delivery.
Contact Paypal and find out how they go about confirming delivery with this particular company.
I have learned that you can often get more for something... and greater interest if you are shipping it.
The easiest shipper is Plycon or someone who does blanket wrap shipments. They send out two guys, who will wrap the furniture, remove it and load it in the truck. You don't have to do anything other than sign on the dotted line. Make sure you buy insurance.

I once sold a large sofa and the lady arranged her own shipping (I blanket wrapped it)
When the shipper picked it up - I signed their paper work.
As they pulled away - I realized that I had not had them sign anything for me.
It worked out thank goodness but I could have given a sofa away.
I still have a photo that the lady sent me of the sofa in her lovely Victorian house. It was a perfect fit.
