I used it all the time.
Say you had a signed painting and you couldn't make out the last 2 letters - you could put in picas* painting and the search would include any painting by Picasso.
Or say you are looking for Jadite glass - sellers list it as Jadite, Jaditeware or Jadeite. Jad* glass would get you to all the Jadite. You would see alot of other stuff as well but you get the idea.
