UPS is going to be taking a big hit next year from ebay. Starting in May - we will no longer be able to pay and print UPS label with paypal.
FedEx and ebay must have made some type of deal.

Cheapest is relative.
First, USPS doesn't offer real tracking.
Second, their rates don't include insurance up to $100. When you add the cost of insurance, I find Fed Ex is the better deal, even if by a small margin.
Third, comparing Fed Ex to UPS, FE is the clear winner. I have had absolutely NO problems EVER shipping with Fed Ex or filing a claim. They have processed everything efficiently and quickly. Their counters are usually quick to process my packages and I get a receipt for all of my packages on drop off. Of course, I live and work near 3 FE/Kinkos, so that is a plus.
Fourth, FE is fast and their Ground Service doesn't give priority to other services like USPS does. For example, if you ship Parcel Post and the package is large, there may not be enough room on the truck for a few days. Nobody knows when it will arrive. With FE, you know what day it will arrive.
Fifth, Discounts!!! Fed Ex offers businesses some handsome discounts. I have better discounts than eBay offers shippers, so I still use Fed Ex for creating labels and copy paste tracking.
Sixth, Rewards!!! you can sign up for Fed Ex rewards. Over the course of a year we get about $50 in gift cards from Visa, Amazon, or anything else we choose from their catalog. Additionally, I have a second Fed Ex account that gives me airline miles (lower discount rate). I had a Delta frequent flier account that was short by 2000 miles for two tickets. So, I signed up for this 2nd account. I got 500 miles for my first package and 500 for my fourth package, plus 20-50ish miles for each additional package.

for weekend warriors who ship from home, what does it take to get Fed Exp to come and pick up our packages?
I do have a Fed Exp account via Ebay, but I dont think they will come and pick up any packages from my home?
It depends on what you ship, many of us Ebay sellers,USPS is still the most economical way to ship.
I live in a subdivision and multiple households share a mail station, there are several mail boxes big enough to hold large boxes,so if we are not home to receive these packages, the mail man just place them in these mail box and leave the key in our mail box, this is not something UPS or Fed Exp offer.
I no longer buy insurance from USPS,if I file a claim,it will ask me to bring the item into post office, which is too far and then I have to stand in line and the clerk has no clue what she is looking at.
