You may be right, Shag. I forget the name of that fellow who was so great at helping us out with oriental marks. He spoke of his parents in China. I think he ended up changing his user id tho.

it is not upside down, the first picture is correct.
It appears to be the name of a place.
the first character is 'hill' or 'mountain'
Is it the mark on the bottom of a porcelain piece?

It is a dish but don't think it is porcelain, Its too thick. The mark is in the center on the back and is about 1" high. Its v ery pretty with bright red cherries on a blue background with leaves.
tnx

If it is cherries, then it is Japanese, they use Kansi (Chinese characters ) for artwork

No,Kansi is a term meaning 'Hans writing',HANS dynasty of China is so powerful, central Chinese are often referred to as Hans people ,as opposed to the other ethnic races such as Mongolian,Tibetan,Manchurian.
Kansii just mean Hans writing or Chinese writing.
The mark shown on the bottom of your dish is probably the name of the maker, not really meaningful.
Is it a soy sauce dish?
