Hi all. We're watching a huge fire in our mountains (San Jacinto Mountains above Palm Springs). God bless fire fighters! 700 of them have been working even overnight, along with tanker planes and helicopters, to keep it from coming over the mountain to our town of Idyllwild. About 800 acres burned so far, and the fire action is now headed for the outskirts of Palm Springs (much evacuation there). Thank heaven the wind didn't change direction overnight! We'd have been goners. All of us have gone through our homes and picked up precious items to be saved and drive off the hill. Cars were loaded last night.

Anyhow, just a note to say that we're very very grateful to firefighters, who risk their lives.

This is just a note to reflect how grateful we are.

Just a follow up on Roadsmith's post, as she is probably at a rescue center -

This is all from today's OC Register:

"Pacific Crest Trail shut by Idyllwild flames"

Do you think eBay would excuse a Seller from shipping immediately because of the fire?

I hope the buyers would understand for sure... but there are always those few who think, "no excuses".

WHEW! We evacuated and after 6 days we're back in Idyllwild. The fire stayed two mountain ridges away from our town, didn't come closer. About 45 sq. miles burned. The smoke clouds looked very menacing as we hurriedly packed up two cars and left town.

The firemen are GODS, I say. One day off a week, and because there were 3300 of them, most of the motels were full. We wandered that night from Hemet to Temecula to Murrieta (after first calling one in Banning) before we got the last room available at the Murrieta inn.

It's very interesting to me that we could get everything of irreplaceable worth in the two cars. Family mementos,my recipes and jewelry, my diaries from grade 7 (!!), medical and financial information. Neither car was broken into at the two motels we ended up in.

No deaths!

Helicopters still lifting buckets of water to where the Hot Shots are putting out the little ember fires all over the mountains. The air tankers were a sight to see, as they dropped the orange fire retardant.

Things were beautifully arranged and worked like clockwork. Our Mountain Community Patrol volunteers closed the roads so no vandalism, then checked our credentials at edge of town as we returned home. 300 fire trucks from all over worked that danged fire.

Finally, a hard storm thoroughly wet the ground the night before we returned, and we've had rain and drizzle the last two days. Such a help.

And. . . we still have each other! The very best plus in the whole experience.

Neglus, you would have proud to see how protective the firefighters were when the fire began to creep down your side of the mountains. Only two or three outbuildings burned (on property built right up to the mountains, BIG real e$tate going on there!

Oh, it's so good to be home! We build and feather our nests, a twig at a time, and treasure whatever it is we live in. ~Adele

ONe of the most wonderful things from all this kerfuffle is that NO firefighters lost their lives. There's been much too much of that lately. We LOVE those guys (and gals).

Glad to hear that you are well and that the fire did not reach you. Living in Colorado, I know how scary these fires are and how fast they move.
Stay safe,
