Anyone know if you can counteroffer higher than a sale price?
That may sound funny, but I decided to run a sale on some items that are Buy It Now with Make Offer. Whenever this happens the low ball offers come out of the woodwork.
Generally, I run the sale between 10-15% for the sale, and will consider offers of an additional 5%, depending on what the item is. I have a simple script I use to reject and counter offers that are low without being rude, but sometimes the offers are so ridiculous that I don't simply want to reject the offers, but make a counter offer that is higher than the sale price, but below the BIN.

I've counteroffered for the same as BIN or maybe a dollar under.
I once got a $30 offer on a $400 item - countered at $399 and under comments, I wrote "Did you forget a zero?"
I think some people get a kick out of trying to be rude.

I like that one. I got another one last night. Not even 50% of my asking price.
I do feel obligated to reply for a few reasons. Sometimes it takes some educating a buyer in appropriate offers and simply letting them know that their offer is unreasonable. Obviously, if the offer is beyond ridiculous, like 10% of the price, then they probably deserve a rude response.
I have a simple script I use every time I get a low offer. I have it in my Notes App on my computer, tablet and phone so I can respond from anywhere.
"Hello. Unfortunately, we cannot accept the offer you made. We consider a reasonable offer to be 10-15% below our asking price, depending on how long it's been listed & our costs. We have sent you a counter offer we hope you will consider. Thanks"
I know it tells them a range, but it doesn't tell them a price and lets them know that I am willing to negotiate if I am getting a serious offer. If they are close, within 20-25% depending on the item, I will change my response to something more personalized and leave out the words "reasonable offer".
Even so, I will get this situation -
BIN $195
1st Offer: $25
Reply with text above and counter offer of $175
2nd Offer: $30
Reply with reject offer
Sometimes they come back with a 3rd offer. If it is nowhere close, I just reject it. I suppose I could let them sit on the offer until it expires, but I prefer to treat customers like how I would like to be treated.
