Nothing wrong with any of them? There's something wrong with all of them.

I learned at an early age that brains and character counted for little for a girl. I was in the Girl Scouts and we had a costume contest for Halloween. I forgot to inform my mom so I didn't have a costume, so you can be sure my observation was impartial. Some of the girls wore very imaginative, elaborate costumes. One girl, the pretty and VERY spoiled daughter of one of the women in charge of the scout troop was wearing a very ordinary, store-bought witch costume. She was awarded first prize, of course. Nepotism at its best!

I know what you mean, petunia.
Guess who's daughter won the contest tonight. Yep, the contest chairperson's daughter.

From birth to age 18, a girl needs good parents, from 18 to 35 she needs good looks, from 35 to 55 she needs a good personality, and from 55 on she needs cash. (Sophie Tucker)

Calamity lost out in "Miss Personality"?

Oh dear!Looks like my personality is only good for a few more years! It's time for me to start saving cash. Thanks Irene, I just hate it when I do things out of sequence.

krs, you are right. That's what done me in. I just cashed in my chips.

No personality, getting closer to 55 and no cash. Bummer!

But that's part of the problem with those things. You never see the contestant's real personality.

Maui,
I don't watch them, either. Rather watch a movie with blood, guts and a good car chase. Or should I say posse chase?

I think that you get a clearer idea of the contestant's personality when the pageant is over.

They used to (and may still) hold the Miss Nude USA pageant near here. I never attended, of course, but it seemed to me that it would be a way to cut through the finery and get to the FINEry.

You mean you never even peeked, krs?

Sure do get a better picture of the true personality after. Before they are all going for the Miss Congeniality trophy.

They are either bopping or bawling.

Speaking of which they finally got rid of Coconut Ear Greg on "Survivor" tonight. Watched the tape on my hiatus from here.

HeHe!

calamity I QUITE agree! When I was 'pageant age', my mother and a few friends tried to talk me into entering the Miss America pageant but even then the entire notion of beauty pageants made me puke.
Fortunately for you all I have a busy day today so I can't do a major CatRant on this one but just for a day I would love to see a man get turned down for a job because he has a beer gut or see a pageant where men parade in their scivvies and a panel of pompous assed women judge them on the level of dimpling in their thighs... or here's one: just ONE DAY where a woman can have a conversation with a man without him staring at her boobs!!! Will never happen.

Men judge women by the size of their boobs. Women judge men by the size of their wallets.

('Twas ever thus.)

Not that my cleavage is anything approaching remarkable, but I find that if a man's staring at your boobs while he talks to you, if when you talk to him you:

look at his hairline with a rather puzzled expression

look juuuust past one ear while wearing a Mona Lisa Smile

OR

look at his crotch with an expression of alarm

you can really have a lot of fun.

ok twinsoft, so if women are judged by their boobs and men are judged by their wallets, where the hell are all of the wallet pageants, where men parade up and down a runway, counting their money in front of a panel of women judges?
Where are all of the catcalls and wolf whistles from women as men walk down the street and the gals yell "Hey Baby, nice wallet!"
Where is the women-run corporation that will hire one man over another because he has a nicer wallet?
Where are the "Big Wallet John does Dallas" porn flicks?
Where is the "Big Wallet Channel"?
Lame lame lame...

I see these things for what theyn are: advertising mediums.

Does anyone really believe that the Miss America pageant is held for any reason but to sell advertising space for the night of the event? If so, you are laboring under a delusion.

The same goes for the ubiquitous "award" shows and "all-star tributes" that litter the airwaves at various times during the year. Its advertisers who bring us these farces. Do you [i]really[/b] believe that today's stars all get together or e-mail each other and say, "Gosh, we really owe a huge debt to Milton Berle. Let's have an all-star tribute to Uncle Milty." Nuh-uh. Advertisers come up with this dreck.

The real danger, I think, is when ordinary folks start to emulate this crap. How many young girls are screwed up for life by these petty contests? Just being a kid is hard enough -- you don't need adults stacking the deck with these artificial competitions. Hell, if it were up to me, I'd do away with prom queens (and kings), homecoming queens, team captains, etc. The only purpose they serve is to aggrandize a few individuals and engender feelings of inferiority among others.

I think Twinsoft's point was that just as "all" men are only interested in a woman's boobs, "all" woman are only interested in a man's wallet.

Spaz,

You are entirely correct. That's why I didn't even get into the little girl contest they had.

Kcat,

Right on!!!!!!!!!

HCQ,

That was great. I'm going to try that sometime. I'm going to print this out so I can save your list. ROTFL! Going to give it to my daughter, too.

Twinsoft,

Thank you but I have my own money and when my daughter (who is quite buxom) gets into the business world she will be able to buy and sell us all with her brain not her breasts.

calamity, be sure to tell your daughter all about the 'Wet Wallet Contests' out there so she can ogle and sneer like a proper lady, lol

Oh, also make sure to send her to that place that I'm sure must be next door to 'Hooters' called 'Wallets'... LOLOL

edited cos I was distracted by a jogger with a FINE set of wallets and I had to ask him if they were real or fake!

Kcat,

You know, I would be rolling on the floor laughing if this wasn't such serious stuff. Actually, I am but this is serious stuff. It is part of what has demoralized women for years and the sad part of it is that alot of them don't realize it though I have to cheer that my daughter's generation has grown.

An example is that my son was ordered to take one of our younger male teachers to the bars at her college so he could meet some of her friends. He is desparate for a girlfriend. The first thing out of his mouth when he met our daughter was "Mr. Smith wants a wife." Later that night she called me and was having a fit (to put it mildly) about what he had said. She told me that she and the girls in her college were there to get an education not find a husband and how dare he say that to her. It was demeaning to her and her friends, on and on.

The moral of my story is that thank goodness times have changed because I can remember back in my day many girls did go to college and were sent to do just that, find a husband. Of course, it's fine if finding someone just happens but they don't intentionally go to do that anymore.

Our roars are getting louder, aren't they?

I've got to think of the name of a place to go along with Hooters. It's only fair.
Any thoughts?

Don't worry twinsoft. The comments about men do not pertain to you.

Beauty contests have always seemed very weird to me. The women look like they are made of wax and silicone.
Miscreant -and proud of it!

calamity, I have to think that there is hope for the future...by that I mean with the rise of women who are not content to sit idly by and play house while their husbands have real lives has and will continue to produce more single moms. Good and bad there, but with the right attitude the potential is there for a whole new generation of young men being raised by these single moms and learning to view women not just as stay-at-home toys or Mrs. Somebody as opposed to being somebody herself. That's how I'm raising my kids...I don't bash their father in front of them...I save that for you guys, lol...but I do try my best to teach them that women and men should co-exist on this planet as equals. When they were very young I purposely sought out a female doctor so they wouldn't start life out with that old 'men are doctors, women are nurses' crap that seems to start the whole ball of wax rolling.
I got caught in the trap when my boys were babies...I stayed home and changed the diapers and cleaned the house and baked the cookies and ironed the ties and I HATED IT! I think it hit me once when I stopped in at my ex's office and he introduced me to the guys as his wife and I didn't remember anybody asking me my first name. Because it didn't matter. I was DumDum's wife, and that's all that mattered. And I thought about it later and mulled and pondered and it made me sick when the weight of 'it didn't really matter' began to sink in. After years of pursuing my own dreams, I had become lost and was replaced by a part of someone else's identity and of course the dreams began to gather dust on the shelf...I couldn't stand for that. I couldn't stand thinking of my boys growing up accepting me as more part of someone else than as my own person.
Well no more I can tell you that much.

Sorry for the CatRant...boy I can really take off when I get going, huh? lol

edited for a typo, what a surprise... hehehe
