I just rescued a Canon BJC 5000 out of the trash at my self store this morning and I plugged it in and it prints text nice and even color web pages look real good but if I try to print a big graphic it says not enough memory. I got the manual online from Canon and it does not say anything abouyt being able to install more memory and I don't see any access to do that on the body. Are they talking about my RAM? I only have 64 meg in this machine.
I think I'd like to keep it because it prints 17x11.

Were you able to print the graphics before your got this printer?

My husbands laptop only has 64 mb of ram but my epson 880 will print using it. I would say 64 mb should be enough.

But I am by no means an expert. Maybe you could go to Canon online and find an error message page that could help you.

I have a HP 1200c and it has 2meg onboard of it's own I can print files up to about 3 and a half meg before it bulks.
I was trying to print a half meg jpeg on the Canon. maybe I will try sticking 128 more in it as it is pretty cheap now.

Most likely it's a lack of printer memory. Take it back and get the next better model.

i'm so sleepy

Gravid although this really won't help with your specific problem here is a helper for those with printer problems using Windows:

If your printer seems unable to print out large multipage documents you may want to take a look at your printers 'spool' setting.

Under 'my computer' then 'control panel' then 'printers' then locate your print diver from the icons and right click on it, on the popup menu locate 'properties' and click on it.
From the next popup go to the tab 'details', select the button that says 'spool settings', then check to see if you have 'start printing after LAST page is spooled' or 'start printing after FIRST page is spooled' checked.
You may want to try 'start printing after FIRST page is spooled' if it's not already checked.

Thanks everyone.
I doubt if they will have a better model at the dumpster tomarrow - but with this place you never know. I went back by and filled my trunk and back seat with telephones today.
What a shame some on the bottom were cracked.

Powerhouse is right. Printers have their own memory. This is so that they can do spooling, which means that you don't have to wait for one page to be finished before you ask it to print the next page out. It stores the pages into memory. Then, with the advent of real color graphics, the amount of memory required went from a simple 100kb to 1megB to 4megB. Then, as jet ink printers became available, then you began to see more graphics intensive printing being done. Many printers simply allowed you to upgrade the internal printer RAM for extraordinary amounts of cash. You may want to go to Canon's web site and snag a copy of the owner's manual there -- they do have them for downloading as .pdf documents. Then, see if upgrades on internal memory is available. If not, as Powerhouse stated, turn off the SPOOLING in the printer's Properties to free up more internal memory for the printer buffer.

Yes I downloaded the manual but it does not say a blooming thing about memory except about closing programs to free it up in the machine. Nothing about installing it.
I also searched for "canon printer memory" on the web and eBay but it all seemed to be for laser printers. I guess maybe I will e-mail canon tech assistance but I dread them asking where I got the thing and I don't want to say out of a dumpster...

Gravid, did you get and install the actual driver for the printer?
You can get it here:

Yeah - I knew enough to get that. I just found another answer at:

http://www.digitalkamera.de/Info/Drucker/CanonBJC-5000-en.htm

It says in the specs it has NO memory of it's own. So it has to use whatever your machine has.

I learn something every day. Guess I will go down and buy some tomorrow.

Yeah I ordered 2 pieces of 128meg each from Starsurplus.com They seemed as cheap as bidding on eBay at $26.95 each and I don't have to wait for auction end. Thought about just driving to the store but that is an hour shot I could be wasting here!
