Truly not trying to take anything away from the other thread...but, I have been fortunate enough to give and receive some neat presents.....How about you...doesn't have to just Birthday Gifts, Anniversay, Holiday, Happy Vasco De Gama Day...whatever!!

Best present I ever gave, was to my adventurous husband....A hot air balloon ride. The pilot was a professional Airline pilot and hot air enthusiast. My husband loved every minute of it and took some fantastic shots, flying over ridges, reflections looking down on ponds...it was great and topped off with Champagne, cake and fruit.

Zilvy, what timing! Yesterday, I was visiting my parents and they said they had something special for me. It was a page of cartoon drawings that my father sent me when I was three years old. My mother, sister, and I were living in New York and he was in training in Washington. He wrote my mother a few times a week and always sent me a sketch. I didn't even know any of these drawings existed anymore but my mother found them this week when she was cleaning out an upstairs closet. What a surprise - probably the best I've ever gotten.

That truly is a treasure, how fortunate that they were saved and found. I was just commenting last week that I wish I had the postcards my grandma used to send to me with hand drawn birds, and other animals. This was when I was pre school and not yet reading. They are gone, but I do have letters from my Grandmother as a little girl to her grandmother. Amazing what families save. Happy dance for your treasures Saabsister.

The very best gifts that I have received are one's that my children made or wrote; pictures, poems, notes...nothing bought at a store.

The gift was an old briefcase that my father gave me when my grandfather passed away. Stashed away were letters that my mother had written home to her parents when they were stationed in Hawaii. It was a treasure to read those letters. Especially, the ones my mother telling her parents that she was expecting me. It also helped me to come to know the sister that died when I was only a year old and she was just twelve.

The best gift I ever received was not intended to be a Christmas gift, but that's how it turned out. My daughter gave us our little Yorkie, Molly. Molly was a stray and they brought her all the way from South Carolina at Christmastime. We fell in love with her, and my daughter said "Do you want her?". What a wonderful gift she was... and still is.
The best birthday gift I ever received was the news that I was going to be a grammy. A very YOUNG grammy.

I've gotten many super gifts, but my favorite is the one I received from my mom on my 40th BD. She gave me the first engagement ring that my father (may he rest in peace) gave to her. It is a small diamond surrounded by filigree (sp?) work, a few small diamonds & 4 safires (sp?). I adore it. Not only because it is beautiful, but mainly because I know how much love it holds...
The best gift I ever gave was my DH's 40th birthday present. A man who has always loved fast cars & driving. I got him a spin around Pocono Raceway in a Winston Cup car. The gift included a 2 hour course, a 3 lap drive-along (with a pro driver) & (his favorite part) a 9 lap drive alone!!...Just today the PA 500 was run and he watched just to see the on board cameras and remember his thrill!

I don't know as it was the best, but one of the gifts that has stayed in my memory through the years was a gift of two books. It was the Christmas when I was in the 5th grade, and what I wanted more than anything were two books: "A Little Princess" and "The Secret Garden," both hardcovers & illustrated by Tasha Tudor. For weeks everytime we visited Pickwick's (now B.Dalton's) I would show them to my mother. You know--the kind of "subtle" hints kids give . But then, a week before Xmas...disaster! We were in Pickwick's & I went to look at the books & they were *gone*! I remember feeling crushed. Devastated. My books were gone. Then came Christmas Eve and we opened our presents. There they both were. What a thrill that was. That was 36 years ago, but the memory is still strong. And I still have both books. I went on to collect everything Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote for both kids & adults that I could get my hands on, but those two books are still special.
I know exactly how you felt. My mother used to go way overboard with Christmas stuff. But I found a large book of short stories and that is all that I really wanted.
Hepburn
Just as she was about to be swept away, the broom straw caught fire.
That is the story of my life; one unfortunate event after another.

Someone once treated me to the best birthday by giving me all my favorites from dinner to breakfast the next morning (and everything in between). Can't really go into all the details, but I'm grinning from ear to ear just thinking about it.

The best present I have ever received was not a birthday or Christmas gift, but rather a gift of the universe, a Happy New Year gift. When my daughter was little and so sick, we never had a birthday or christmas that she ever really enjoyed because she was always sick, so we never really enjoyed them either. When she was four she had surgery on 28th December, so we were actually given the best present anyone could ever wish for, our child was well for the first time in her life and that gift lasted for almost 2 years before she got really sick again.
Apart from that, the other best gifts that I have received are from my husband. Each time one of our children was born he would always arrange for flowers to arrive before I went into surgery , they would always be fresh and beautiful so that I would have a good memory to take into theatre with me, and then when I woke up after the delivery there would always be a silk arrangement for me to keep and take home.....a rememberance of our child's birth, and as well as that he always gave me a piece of jewellery. Now that coming from a guy who hates to go shopping and buy a gift and would rather I pick something out myself is really special. So they would have to be my all time best gifts.
I just thought of another gift that was very special. When my parents were travelling around outback Australia, my dad used to send what he called Medicine money for our daughter, he did this because he knew that we were struggling with the medical costs and it was his way of helping, sometimes we could even afford to give the children a treat and buy them a new toy. All because my dad is a very special person and loves his grandchildren. The other special gift my parents gave to us was the cost of the hospital and doctors bills when we needed to get a second opinion for our daughter and did not have the money to pay for it. We had to go private for these test and just could not afford it ourselves, so Mum and Dad paid the lot, and never would take any of it back. That gift save our daughter a lot of pain and suffering, because the results showed that she did need surgery and that is the surgery she had when she was 4 years old. That gift was given almost 15 years ago and it is still one of the best I have ever received.

Wonderful gifts, Nettak!
My friends and I were talking about how the holidays were when we were little. We all remembered how excited we were to get, among other things, a coloring book and crayons. Of course, if you go the BIG box of Crayola crayons with the sharpener, your were "The Big Sh*t"
This Christmas Mom brought out a present for me. On it she had written, for The Big Sh*t.
Yep - you guessed it a BIG box of 64 Crayola crayons, complete with sharpener.

The best gift I ever gave, I didn't buy. I was having a terrible time coming up with ideas for something special for my husband. I had asked for ideas...several so that the final could be a surprise...he was no help.
One day he came home with a small box and told me this was going to be my present to him for Christmas. I wanted to look in the box and he said, "No, no, one of us has to be surprised, just wrap it!"
On Christmas day my folks were with us, when I handed hubby his present, boy was I surprised when he opened it. It was a wonderful brass microscope in a fitted case, with various lenses and eyepieces. My Dad got the biggest kick out of the story and said to my Mom, we've got to get to know these people better, they're really fun.

When my children were little their dad and I got divorced, it was a really tough time for me. I mean r-e-a-l-l-y tough, to the point of no money and pancakes for supper every other night. The 3 kids had gone to our local Easter Egg Hunt that morning, and this year some of the plastic eggs had quarters in them. Well, after the hunt they were really excited with their quarters and headed up town to the drug store to buy treats. But (and here's the part that still makes me cry!) when they came home I found out they had pooled their money and instead of buying candy, had bought me a little "best mom in the world" statue"--and had even got the drug store ladies to gift wrap it for them! Now that's what I call priceless...

You bet I still have it! Right up in the china cupboard next to all the fancy glassware. And--thanks for the compliment!
