And, as usual, she's got a point.
AUSTIN -- "I'm afraid Karl Rove's
timing is off: You can't pass a huge
tax cut tilted heavily toward the rich
and then announce that Social
Security is about to go belly-up.
People make the connection.
If only he'd waited 'til next year -- the Washington press corps
can't remember anything longer than six months. But Rove has
cut it too fine this time. People are getting their rebate checks
and hearing that Social Security is a disaster area at the same
time.
Furthermore, the peppy idea of putting Social Security money
into the stock market doesn't look all that good since the
market has lost about $3 trillion in the current downtown.
Pfffft! Hey, let's put our retirement money into that sucker and
watch it shrink!"

Hjw,
A market crash, while possible, isn't likely. A smart investor would have their money in a number places and cover their a$$. One could invest in U.S. savings bonds and beat the return that you are getting on SS.
A total crash and depression would burden the social services to the point that you would see SS cuts very quickly. Also, remember that SS taxes are 14+ percent. The plan, as proposed, would only allow 2% to be invested.

KatyD,
I have to disagree with you. It's the "old" thing. We, all, will be old, if we live long enough. I'm getting close....real close.
Hjw,
If the stats that you state are correct, and I assume they are, that makes the case for individual retirement accounts. You are talking about the very people that need money in the bank for their retirement. This won't be money that has to come from Uncle Sam. This will be money that can go a child or grandchild, after all us old farts croak. Well, after ya'll are gone, as I plan to live forever.

Helen, at least cite the article's origin. Otherwise it looks like you are trying to pass it off as your own words. I'm sure you wouldn't do that, would you? Others might be interested in what publication it originated from.

I don't even remember where I found it. I searched all over the web.
I have no interest in passing off anything as you infer. I know how to write. I was just gathering information that I considered important...Not entire articles but only excerpts.
You have no interest in race anyway so what's the big deal. Are you just harassing me again and crying to the moderator? It's really getting a little tiresome, childish and silly.
Please, Please, Please, Leave me alone. I have never done anything to you to warrant this constant harassment. I have only tried to help you if you can remember.

Oh, okay Helen. Maybe next time you cut and paste an "excerpt" you might find it just as easy to cut and paste the url. Save ya alot of time, you know. As it stands now, with no accreditation to the rightful author, it looks like you may be plagiarizing. Of course I don't think you would ever do that, but the way you posted it, you are attributing the passage to yourself. I wouldn't want you to get in any trouble or anything.
I wouldn't harass you, Helen. I love you.

Hjw,
To say "NO", before all the questions are answered does everyone a dis-service. It's time to take politics out of the debate. This wasn't a plan proposed just by GW and the Republicans (evil as we are). The commission was bi-partisan. And, I remember there being some heavy duty Democrats on it.
You have concerns, and rightly so. I am sure there will be safeguards. If there were not, I would fight it to the end. Every thing is not a plot to screw over the lower income population.
