It's begging, plain and simple. Not something parents should allow or encourage in their children.

I liked one gal's statement, "To me, it's the newest form of prostitution"

It makes you wonder if the parents ever pay attention to what their daughters (and sons) are doing. Guess not, seeing those websites. And these girls are as young as 15. I didnt know salon.com was a porn site. Guess it is.

Salon.com is reporting on the site(s) in question with an obvious sense od outrage. They are a news agency- an online newspaper.

It's vulgar exploitation of teenagers by the newspaper, the parents and the children themselves.

Yes, the sites are elsewhere--this is just a news report with links. Outrage. Disgust. Call it what you will. Can't say I blame them after looking into what some of those girls are putting on their sites. Begging isn't the worst of it when you take the time to do that. 17 year-olds giving (& receiving) detailed descriptions of bowel movements. 15 year-olds bragging about taking drugs. Base-minded cesspools is a *kind* description of some of the sites linked to the article. Other girls with sites listed might just have well caused a large sore on a leg or cheek & squatted down with a bowl on the nearest city corner to beg from passersby.

krs, one of the girls sites I looked at had her homepage hosted by salon. Thats why I commented on it.

Regardless of where they are hosted, its sleaze, plain and simple.

I guess its the "thing" nowadays to discuss body functions in order to be "cool". Or is "cool" even the correct word now? Never mind, I dont wanna know. I will stick with sleaze. Or smut.

American Pie 2 led the box office this weekend with something like $45 million in ticket sales. That tell you something?

Geeze- I didn't visit any of the sites. The article made them seem somewhat innocence and puffery - but talking about bowel movements ????

Sounds like borderline child porn to me.

The links in the article connect to outright PORN...well, live and learn...I'd rather be a dunce!!

Reminds me of an article I read about Japan. In certain areas of Japan there are no specific laws against prostitution and some of the High School age girls make a game of seeing how much they can extract from middle aged men as escorts without actually having sex. Some of course go over the line.

Some behavior is timeless, but the internet makes it instant and more efficient.

Hepburn,
I didn't go far and didn't notice that. There was only one site that I looked at, and my reaction to it was to be surprised that it had been operating since 1997. I also didn't see any of these really more 'hard' postings. I saw a few pictures of girls that looked somewhat innocuous and noticed that there were links to more extensive prurient interests.

While at dinner I decided to join up. Post a few swiped photos and wait for the payoff. Do you think that these men would think it strange that I had gun parts and machine tools in my wish list?

Dangerous as well as trashy. One 15 year old girl is asking for pictures of crotches so she can [can I say this here?] masterbate while looking at them. That will get her a lot of gifts I am sure but my goodness where are their parents? Don't they see these gifts coming into their homes and wonder about it?

This world gets sicker and sicker

edited because it is crotches...not critches

krs, I clicked on two or three, and that was enough for me. One girl showed her breasts, the other talked of body functions and one was talking about looking for some weed. It depressed me, to be honest. I felt bad for them, embarassed, and angry at their parents for not paying enough attention to know what they are doing on those computers they have in their rooms.

LOL. I thought of this too. Wondered how many of the "girls" were anything but.

I'd read that article. I clicked on one of the links but it took too long to load and I got bored. It all sounded dumb anyway.

But, Salon.com isn't a porn site, and you don't have to actually click all the links to know that none of these girls' websites are hosted on Salon, holding your mouse over the links reveals the web addresses.

groovy is just fine--it's been around since the 30's which elevates it from faddy slang to part of regular language.

Actually I don't use 'groovy' anymore, I'm not sure if I ever did. After I posted that I did try it though to see what the reaction would be.

"Honey, you want any more coffee or can I have the rest?"

"You can have it."

"Groovy, I need an extra cup."

"Did you just say 'groovy'?"

She laughed at that. There's a bit of a generation gap between us. I believe 'groovy' was a buzz word before she was born.

I have noticed a steady decline in the news content on Salon. The fact that the links were made available by Salon was exploitation in my opinion...What's it called, "yellow journalism?" Someting that you would expect to read in the National Enquirer.

No, what I expect to read in the Enquirer is fiction--they are famous for creating stories out of whole cloth.

As for the links provided in the article, that is how things are done today both on the Net & in print. Even here on the AW site people demand links to substantiate info!

Blaming Salon.com is rather like blaming the messenger

At the risk of sounding like... I don't know what, these are all "other people's" children. Whose? I'm just curious, do the parents who think they know what their children are really doing -- really know?

Maybe it's not a really applicable question because the people at AW are probably more net savvy than average.

You are right. It's not fiction. What I should have pointed out is that Salon is in financial difficulty and because of that, I read somewhere that they are focusing on sex and scandalous stories...more than in the past in order to attract readers.

The link to the financial info is
