RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A state representative forwarded an e-mail to fellow lawmakers this week that claimed, "Two things made this country great: White men & Christianity."
Rep. Don Davis, a white Republican, said he received the letter Friday and forwarded it to every member of the state House and Senate. He said he didn't consider the letter racist.

Well, Rainybear, they still believe those sanitized history books that were always in public schools until recently. From reading them you'd think that Black people were never here in America until the 1960's and that all Amerindians were just a bunch of Heathen Savages that we Thankfully brought closer to God in one way or another. Conservatism does that to a person -- it blinds the eyes to new developments in history that destroys the fantasy world dreamed about by those who would turn the clock back. Civil War Flag enthusiasts dream about the genteel culture that supposedly prevailed in the South before the war brought reality home to them; however, they have a blind eye to the misery of an entire race of people that made such a society possible. People are that stupid.

Statements like that make me want to barf. White men and christianity were probably the catalyst to the downfall of this country. Shame on you Mr. N.C. Representative!

spazmodeus, I hope you're joking....
The minute "white people" started thinking that they were/are supreme to other races plus the fact that "christianity" was a guise for oppression, would be my answers.

Hey kraft...
I had no idea you were Canadian...that accounts for your good manners, for sure...
So when you say downfall of this country...which country? Yours, mine...or ours?

Well, actually I'm an American living in Canada, toke. I have dual-citizenship.
What I'm referring to here is North American Indians, "Afro"-Americans, Japanese, etc.,
Canada played a big part in this type of discrimination, for lack of a better term. Coming from South Carolina, I saw it first hand and it made me sick.
As far as Christianity goes, a great example is the person making the assinine statement to begin with...."Two things made this country great: White men & Christianity." While the South is deep in their religious beliefs, they go against some of the very core of what God is trying to teach them with their hypocracies.
Seems to me like it's been this way since time began.

Ah...no wonder I didn't catch on, Kraft. Good manners seem to thrive in both the South...and Canada.
Seems to me, through the ages...whoever has been in power has oppressed those without it. I don't think whites have a lock on that...sadly, I think it's human nature...and religion often seems to provide the excuse...worldwide.

toke, I agree with what you say...totally! I now see what I said that's confusing.
I don't think the U.S. or Canada is downfallen, but if anything has made these 2 countries strong, it isn't the "white man" OR "christianity". To be honest, I don't even know what a real "white man" is......Nordic, perhaps? It seems very hyprocratic coming from someone from the Bible belt imo. If we could all agree that the Bible was to be interpreted on an individual bases and not this group belief system, then that would help. If we could get rid of discrimination, that would help too. That's why I said these 2 things lead to our downfall, and are not strengths......kind of like you said!
Oh and toke, if you've ever been to Canada, being polite is not the norm. Americans are 20 times friendlier....at least that's been my experience.

If you believe that America in its pre-colonized state was the apex of its existence, then yes, its decline is owed to white males and Christianity.
However, if you are referring to America as the most powerful nation on the face of the earth, a world leader in industry and technology, then you would be wrong. Like it or not, white Christian males brought this nation to prominence. That's a fact of history.

Maybe I just know the cream of the crop. I've been to Canada some...the only unfriendliness I ever ran into was in a Montreal bank...trying to exchange some money. I have zero French...and the teller seemed to resent it... I like most of the Canadians I've met online a great deal. And I like their humor...it has an interesting little twist to it. I'm pretty pro-Canadian, can you tell?

Wasn't it the Protestants, an off-group of Christianity that first settled here? They interpreted the Bible in a "less harsh" way which the Christians objected to, calling them demonic. Any group or person that swayed from being a true Christian was deemed demonic, allowing Christianity to gain it's stronghold. Is this incorrect spazmodeus?
That doesn't apply to ALL Canadians, of course toke! But it's the service part of Canada that needs to change. I think most Canadians would agree. Banks, restaurants, stores.....people here don't want to know if they can help you. Isn't that silly?

So true, Spaz! The only thing is that they had lots of help from other-than-white people to do it. I think that you are missing the role that minority peoples have played in the entire existance of this country. It hasn't always been bit-parts and small-time either. Ask American historains and you'll learn that minorities have had little press for the significant contributions that they made to the world prominance of this country.

I dunno, Kraft. I have a customer right now, I'd like to "help" directly into the hereafter...does that count for friendly??? I'm almost serious. Did you ever hear that fine Canadian song, "If I Had a Rocket Launcher?" Describes my sentiments, exactly.

I believe that Buddhism is a popular religion there...
It seems to me that the further away from Christianity that you can get, the more friendly the people are. Hypocrisy
is a problem with christianity.
So, a good direction to travel is North.

Here toke....
.....here comes the helicopter -- second time today
everybody scatters and hopes it goes away
how many kids they've murdered only god can say
if i had a rocket launcher...i'd make somebody pay.
i don't believe in guarded borders and i don't believe in hate
i don't believe in generals or their stinking torture states
and when i talk with the survivors of things too sickening to relate
if I had a rocket launcher...i would retaliate
on the rio lacantun one hundred thousand wait
to fall down from starvation -- or some less humane fate.
cry for guatemala, with a corpse in every gate
if i had a rocket launcher...i would not hesitate
i want to raise every voice -- at least i've got to try
every time i think about it water rises to my eyes
situation desperate echoes of the victims cry
if i had a rocket launcher...some sonofabitch would die......
Great song!!
