It was very tasteful and low key but i thought it a bit inappropriate for Celine Dion, a Canadian, to be singing "God Bless America, my home sweet home" and in a stylized version. Mariah Carey couldn't resist squeaking during an otherwise totally instrumental break of "America the Beautiful".

Bruce Springsteen Opened, and STOLE the show.
There was no topping his tribute song, and he was INCRDIBLE!
*********************
"MY CITY OF RUINS"
This is a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters...
There's a blood red circle,
on the cold dark ground...
and the rain is falling down
The church doors thrown open,
I can hear the organ's song...
But the congregation's gone
My city of ruins
My city of ruins
Now the sweet veils of mercy,
drift through the evening trees...
Young men on the corner,
like scattered leaves...
The bordered up windows,
The empty streets...
While my brother's down on his knees
My city of ruins
My city of ruins
Come on rise up!...
Come on rise up!...
Come on rise up!...
Come on rise up!...
Come on rise up!...
Come on rise up!...
Come on rise up!...
Now there's tears on the pillow,
darlin' where we slept...
and you took my heart when you left.
without your sweet kiss my soul,
is lost my friend...
tell me how do I begin again?
My city's in ruins
My city's in ruins
Now with these hands...
with these hands...
With these hands...
with these hands...
Now I pray Lord!
with these hands...with these hands
We pray for the strength Lord!
with these hands...with these hands
We pray for the faith Lord!
with these hands...with these hands
We pray for your Love Lord!
with these hands...with these hands
We pray for the lost Lord!
with these hands...with these hands
We pray for this world Lord!
with these hands...with these hands
We pray for the strength Lord!
with these hands...with these hands
We pray for the faith Lord!
with these hands...with these hands
Come on...
Come on...
Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!
Rise up

That Canadian boy from Omeemee, Neil Young, did a pretty fair job with "Imagine" Dennis Franz talking on CNN just now, $116 million raised, and not aired in the west as yet.

Marketing 101
Section 5: Celebrity Marketing
Chapter 1: Selling Yourself
Lesson 13: Any event of national significance (tragedy or triumph, it doesn't really matter) is an opportunity to market your most valuable asset: Yourself. Get in front of the nearest camera and EMOTE! If you can keep from falling down or ralphing on your shoes, the buzz will be pure box office gold!
Your HBO special bombed and you're fading faster than your 1984 denims? SING?!
You retired last year but the baby isn't as entertaining as you expected? SING! LOUD!
A few folks still oppose building that teutonic monstrosity on the National Mall or haven't seen your 10 hour miniseries? SAY SOMETHING! ANYTHING!
You're pushing 30 or 80 and your last umpteen films went straight to video? STAND THERE, JUT THAT JAW &/OR LOOK BEAUTIFUL!
You've courageously condemned this ignorant, racist, sexist, homophobic, polluting, meat-eating, fascist country, yet so many idiots still don't agree with you? LOOK PATRIOTIC!
<generic>You just got out of the boobyhatch/rehab/jail and people still aren't calling you a genius often enough/taking your "project" seriously/inviting you to the best parties? ACT VULNERABLE!</generic>
<whenhellfreezesover>You're a celebrity worth a modest $50,000,000. You donate 10% of your net worth anonymously and shed your tears at home.</whenhellfreezesover>
Yet thanks to the generosity of average, anonymous folks, so much money will be raised from this sellathon that most of it will still get to worthy recipients even after these celebrities' "expenses" have been paid.
And how about all those little seller donations to the Auction for America generating $99M of the $100M that Meg will personally be contributing on behalf of...ebay.
Two more things. Instead of flaming the messenger, do us both a favor: Just click on my name and hit the 'ignore' button. Then visit this thread for something truly profound:

I didn't recognize even half of the performers. Who were the 3 women singing bluegrass with the short blond lead singer? And who was the guy singing with Neil Young, toward the end?

This certainly COULDN'T be meant for Springsteen, who recently ended the HIGHEST GROSSING World Tour EVER, surpassing the Rolling Stones with the MOST WATCHED HBO CONCERT EVER, which happened to be from Madison Square Garden in NYC.
BTW: Springsteen made an "Undisclosed" donation to the cause, rumored to "match" that of Bill Gates's donations according to the chairman of the fund commitee.
He said "Mr. Sprinsteen does not wish to be praised for his donation or effort, and therefore has requested that we not make public his contribution"
Bruce is ALWAYS one of the first and biggest donation contributers to the plight and causes of the American people.
Shadow: Yea, I may be just a teensie bit biased I guess
But Bruce DID bring me to tears with his song last night, and there is a reason why they used the "Boss" to open the show.

I wish they had posted the names of the performers on the screen. I only knew about half of them.
Every song that was performed seemed very heartfelt, except for Celine Dion. It appeared and sounded to me as though she was just doing her usual "look at me, see how wonderful I am" performing.
There were about five too many verses of American the Beautiful....
And I agree -- who dressed Clint Eastwood?!
All in all, however, it was was a valiant effort and very impressive. I loved the Jon Bonjovi "Living on a Prayer".
Muriel - sorry that you held for so long only to get disconnected.

I think the reason they didn't post the names, was because it wasn't suppose to be about them, know what I mean?
I thought Clint was the sh*t though.
He was heartfelt in his speech.
(so what that he borrowed his attire from Oscar Madison)
Also, U2...wow!
Celine and Maria were self promoting as usual, but still brought in donations, soooo.

Poc...
Do you happen to know who the guy with Neil Young was? Actually, it looked like Young was just backing him up. Strange song...kinda folky...kinda country. Not even sure if I liked it, but the singer's intensity was compelling, for sure.

I thought maybe the younger guy with Neil Young was his son? There was a resemblance there both in looks and voice. I agree with what stusi said in the first post. I wonder why Mariah was the only one dressed up?

Me, too - I really liked the guy with Neil Young and would like to know who he is? I also loved Bon Jovi's new version of Livin' on a Prayer!

Apparently they asked all the performers not to wear makeup or dress to the nines well beforehand, certainly worked in making the affair less "Hollywood" than normal. I see most complied with the exception of Ms. Carey, who I'm surprised showed at all, with her problems of late. Notice Jack Nicholson got the top tier of the phone thingy eh?

Thanks, HS...
No wonder I didn't know him...don't even know Pearl Jam...just the name. Wish I could hear that song again, whatever it was. I hope they'll rerun the whole program sometime...I missed most of Bruce.

Funny how Mariah suddenly got better when it became clear other news events had eclipsed her "breakdown" -- and on the same day her movie was released.
Everyone I talk to about the telethon mentions the bulge beneath Clint Eastwood's coat. His .44?
It was interesting that the stars were taking the pledges. I phoned in and Robert DeNiro answered. At least I think it was DeNiro. I said "Hello?" and he said, "Are you talking to me? Are you talking to ME? You must be talking to me because -- "
It was unsettling so I hung up and called back. This time I think I got Jack Nicholson. He said, "Hello, this is Jack Nicholson." After my experience with DeNiro, I was a little dubious. So I said, "Are you really Jack Nicholson? Tell me the truth." And he shouted into the phone, "You can't handle the truth!"
I hung up again. By this time I was thoroughly rattled. I thought, okay, one more try. I dialed again. Cuba Gooding Jr. answered. "Cuba," I said, "Let's cut to the chase. Tell me what I need to do." And he exclaimed "Show me the money!"

For what it's worth...Eddie Vedder did the ultimate anthem for the lost...at least, for me. Of course, I like bagpipes, too.

Well finally- not driving my head into the concrete any longer! Yes ---knew that voice--just driving me a bit insane who it was. Pearl Jam aka Eddie Vedder. Whew!
My thoughts on the "forced fed" gotta watch telethon, a bit dissappointed. I don't know. It it me--is it our world situation?
I don't know. These movie stars and recording artists are doing what they feel are best that they can do.
But still have so much hurt for the entire real reality of the situation. To see them smiling and goshing on the phones, and then see heart felt music. I was confused.
And then, the old doubtful "tomasina" came in and thought, this is just a publicity stunt. Pure and simple. All of our friggin lives have changed and these performers think that if they sing and dance, we will forget what the frig is happening to us all.
Sorry, just rambling--but my real feelings. Last nights telethon left me numb. What were they thinking?
The only true moment for me--John Lennon--Imagine-- performed by Neil Young.
But then guess that was what they were trying to do- identify with everyone--through various entertainers and music styles.
But it fell flat as far as I was concerned. Having movie stars recite real life incidents that happened only a breif week ago--just sort of summed it up too neatly. This is fricking real--not a movie script that they recite lines.
Sorry to go on so long--just that the whole thing sorta bombed, JMHO. Not sure they understood what they were trying to do.
