After nearly 20 years we may soon be moving and we have a lot of accumulated "stuff" we just don't want to take with us.
This weekend was a scheduled curbside rubbish day and if you don't have them in your area, it's a great chance to pile your junk up on the nature strip and the council collect it and dump it for you.
Well, after 20 years, it was time to start cleaning out the sheds. Being classic hoarders we had plenty to get rid of. Most of it was the stuff that is really useless but you hang on to it because it may come in handy one day or you promise yourself that you can do something with it !
We were at it from dawn till dusk. All during the day people were helping themselves and taking away some of the most useless things imaginable, but there again they must be like me and think that they can put it to use!
At the end of the day we had completely filled the nature strip from one end to the other and we still seem to have just as much to sort.
All day long someone would put something on the pile, only to have someone else bring it back because they still thought it was too good to chuck away.
I could have hauled a fair bit of it up to the flea market, but quite honestly I couldn't be bothered.
The council truck came our way this morning and it's all gone now. Just got to wait for the next big clean up day.
It was surprising just how much I sold to people coming up the driveway wondering what else might be coming out. It was strange just how many things people were interested in were "not being thrown away" yesterday that "reluctantly" sold.
I had quite a nice stock of lovely old cabinet timbers that I had stashed away but a furniture restorer paid very handsomely to buy the lot!
All in all, it was a lot of hard work, but well worth the effort.

What is a nature strip? I have never heard this term.

It sounds like a "naturalist annual event" or something the environmentalist would strongly oppose.

The nature strip is the right of way between the sidewalk and the road. In Akron Ohio everyone refers to it as the Devil Strip.

The City got a little stuffy about what you could do there and how it had to be mowed etc. and ran into some protests. A number of people suggested that that is who could take it....

Those council clean ups are great, you never know what you might find, and it is kind of fun watching all those people sneaking around at night with there vans and torches scrounging through everyones junk. Must be Ebay sellers.

jt a nature strip or footpath is the grassy area outside your front fence, the bit between your front yard and the road. Or at least that is what we call it here in Australia.

Oh boy Bob, you must be really good to have cleaned that backyard shed even half way in 1 day, I bet it hurt lots to have to part with so much. LOL When we moved a few years ago after living in the same house for over 17 years, it took us 2 whole weeks to clear Greg's shed. We never intend on moving ever again, it is too much damn hard work and in out new place we have 5 sheds that we would have to clean out.

hey, Nettak called Mylanta "Bob", and it sounds as if he may be Australian. Is that you, Mr. Downunder? I was wondering where you had disappeared to.

I recently tackled our attic, it sure looks good. Problem is the stuff only made it down one flight of stairs and I've now got to tackle the 2nd floor.

There are trucks in front of my house/on my road tearing up my "nature strip" as I write this. The population of my town is 850 people and they are widening our roads! I don't care if it's just a little bit of grass, I hate to see anything green replaced with pavement & rocks.

Oh, and so much for my 2 beds of tulips that have been blooming out there for 4 years or so. Oh great - I am not making this up, now my 3 year old daughter is crying and saying "Our grass is gone". Three cheers for Eminent Domain!!

edited to apologize to Mylanta for getting of the subject!

I'm in Ohio too, and have always heard that area between the sidewalk and the street the "tree lawn".

On our street, the sidewalk is right on the street, and most folks park at least half-way onto the sidewalk because the street is so narrow.
