CNN reports: "An official said, "There is no reason to assume this is some kind of related terrorist incident. If anything, this may be a crazy person. This just doesn't fit with anything" from the terror attack three weeks ago in New York and Washington."

I wonder if the attacker was a middle easterner. Seems odd that the FBI would be called in for just any attack on a bus driver. Also, the fact that Greyhound has pulled their other buses off the road over one attack. I've noticed a couple of times recently when a report is made, that they fail to mention the suspect was a middle easterner. Trying to keep the fear/anger level down?

The FBI is investigating because the bus was travelling across state lines.

As for any description of the man, none has been given thus far on any reports I can find.

They are still not even sure how many are dead. At least six and up to ten.

Well, the FBI is on the scene but there is not much info yet. The passenger who caused the accident and aledgedly slashed the drivers throat had a croation Id...not identified as a passport.

Several people on the bus were killed by the accident and now Greyhound has grounded all buses across the United States.

Just when the bus industry and Amtrack were expecting increased business, this happens.

But, it may not be a terrorist related incident.

I heard 6 dead, 28 injured. The driver is in stable condition, following surgery.

The FBI is calling it an "isolated incident" for now...

I also heard that Greyhound has suspended all their buses for the time being, and other bus lines are being cautioned that they may want to do the same.

I don't see anyone panicking, Barry, just discussing a news report.

Slitting throats is not normally the way a bus gets held up though.

Right, and I'm saying let's keep it that way. For now, at least. If this does turn out to be a related incident, THEN we can all start panicking....

Nobody but you mentioned panic. But if necessary, we are all able to make our own decisions on that score.

Barry,

Posts that presume to tell me what I am thinking or what I might think or when I should start to think fail to make me happy.

Such supercilious advice is not necessary, in other words.

Happy now?

Thank you for your opinion as to the value of my advice, although I suspect that "supercilious" doesn't mean what you THINK it means.

I could be wrong, though. Either way, who the hell cares?

Barry,

Right, who the hell cares.

According to Websters, it means exactly what I thought...coolly and patronizingly haughty.

A few weeks ago, something like this would have been treated like an isolated incident and life would go on. Now, though, the bus company stops service "just in case".

While that may not qualify as panic, it sure sounds like an overreaction.

Overreaction? In hind sight possibly.

However if there had been a dozen passengers prepared to slit the throats of a dozen drivers and the company had gone on with business a usual, the public would now be screaming about callous big business not caring about human life.

Sure we are all jumpy. We have all these "brave, sane and reasonable," men running around using our family and friends' lives as tools for their politcs.

Report in from the Clem Bubba Commercial Driver Training School in Knoxville that several Eastern Europeans had visited, sought training with specific interest in the bus simulator, but aroused owner's suspicions by insisting on paying in dimes and quarters.

"It also seemed odd," said Mr. Bubba, "that they didn't care about parking or braking but only wanted to use the steering and accelerator petal on the simulator. They didn't learn how from ME, I'll tell you that!"

OK, I'm being a wiseass, but who'd be really surprised to hear something like that get reported seriously, NOW?

CNN (TV) is now reporting the attacker carried a Croatian passport, though on their website they're still saying "ID." If he is a foreign national, that could be the reason for such a strong reaction by Greyhound.

CNN interviewed the doctor who did the surgery on the bus driver's neck...the doctor said the driver believed the attacker to be Middle Eastern. It was dark when all this transpired, so the driver's description may not be accurate.

The silence by the authorities regarding the attacker's ethnicity, kind of leads me to believe the driver might be correct. You would think they'd hasten to say he was not Middle Eastern...if he weren't, since the Administration is working very hard to prevent a backlash.

Fear not, Barry. I'm not panicking, and don't expect to any time soon.

I'm sorry, but I have no idea whatsoever what you are talking about. After all, far be it from me to offend anybody by offering obviously supercilious advice. Nope, not my style.

Shoot, if we're going to talk hindsight, why weren't the airlines closed down after Lockerbie? Why wasn't there the collective breastbeating and demands for the terrorists' leader(s) head(s) on a platter then?

One would think the US is the only place in the world to have suffered from terrorist's activity from the way people are carrying on. If London or Istanbul closed down every time a bomb blew, the cities would be closed more than they would be open.

Hi S-kitty...

I think it's just that we're not used to it here. I hope we won't have to become inured to it, but I expect we might.

shadowcat - While many post here who have lived/visited extensively abroad, for those of us who haven't this is a different way of life for us. We have been relatively free to board buses, airlines, etc. without the fear of a terrorist attack. To me, that's the difference. We aren't used to it.

I'm glad to see Greyhound put their passengers safety first. Checked out the situation and then decided it was okay to re-open.

Croatian. The nut on the bus was Croatian. With a population that is 76.5% Roman Catholic and only 1.2% Muslim, I really doubt that Croatia is going to be sending over terrorists to kill Greyhound bus drivers.

This may be unrelated as far as the organized terrorist attacks go but I'm wondering if individuals who are sympathetic to the cause are going to start attacking at random.

This is more scarry to me then organized terrorist attacks. The body count will be smaller but they could stike at any time and in any location, without warning.

I'm the last one who would want to be suspicious of someone because of their race but I think I'll be aware of those around me from now on. Ya just never know..
