Three Americans fighting for the Taliban have been captured. Do you think they should also be tried at a military tribunal or brought back to stand trial for treason?

No military tribunal for American citizens. I suppose they will be charged with treason, but I'm sure they will not be convicted due to their unhappy childhoods, sexual abuse, parents alcoholism, drug abuse, old injuries consisting of bonks to their heads...etc. etc.

Wow, did you notice how wild eyed, and out of it they looked?

When Bush and gang came up with the military tribunal they weren't counting on capturing Americans that were fighting with the Taliban. Should be interesting.

Putting on my moderator tinfoil hat....

I can't believe this remark went unmoderated yesterday. I've received many email complaints from members.

KatyD, your blanket generalizations about people who could be members here at AW are potentially violating the CG's. Now I have to hear in email all about their unhappy childhoods, sexual abuse, parents alcoholism, drug abuse, old injuries consisting of bonks to their heads, ad nauseum.

From now on, please refer to "people charged with treason who are not AW members".

Carry on

Exactly right! I had a boink on my head when I fell out of a tree and another time when my friend hit me in the head with a golf club. But does Katy make any allowances for my misfortune? Absolutely not!!!

I am sure that in her remark above she was referring to my tragic childhood accidents.
Of course this board is all about me, you know. She is always mistreating me and will accept no excuses for anything from anybody...not even me!

Watch her very carefully, Enchanted, because I think that she is trying to hurt my feelings.

Well, if you read between the lines, it looks to me like you're trying to say Helen is a member of the Taliban chococake.

The Justice Department has just decided not to file treason charges against Johnnie "Taliban" Walker. What the heck are they going to charge him with?

Maybe they'll leave the little puke in Afghanistan to starve to death...

Hey! He's from my hometown!

Boy Pat, you blew it,........or rather, you didn't. I had put Chris on a plane yesterday morning to Portland, and I just got a call from her aboard the plane back from there.

Right. I've been sending, on average, 200 per hour since Sunday. Oh well, the plane landed.
Probably the last chance too as I've bought a place in Oregon and it closes Jan 9th or thereabouts.

Lord, how I envy you getting out of California. Does this mean that Chris is retiring? If so, good for her! I think the PO is the last place I'd want to work these days.

Congratulations on your new home -- does it have a lot of property? I could always show up as the back half of a moose while you're out hunting...

Larry King is showing an interview with Walker. He may be tried under a Federal law regarding aiding and abetting terrorists.

No, she's not retiring. She's got a job waiting in Salem. It's got a big house, a 6-bay shop and an orchard, big garden, river runs by it, and it's all good. Pretty fabulous place, really. You lose. LoL!

hahaha, sounds lovely (all except the losing part)

edited to add: Stusi, what do you wanna bet that little puke is already negotiating a book/movie deal? "My Life with the Taliban" The whole thing disgusts me, and it further pisses me off that CNN/Larry King see him as a ratings goldmine and not the traitor/pariah he is (or ought to be viewed as by REAL Americans).

I'm glad to hear that you finally found your place in Oregon, Ken. Sounds neat and I hope that you enjoy it.

Just charging him with aiding terrorists which could only bring a sentence of 8 years! I think he's a traitor and should be tried as such.

Krs your place sounds great. Now, if all those unemployed dotcomers would go back home to Kansas or where ever they came from, maybe we could have our state back.

I'm in San Carlos Ken. They aren't the whole problem but they are a big part of it. Since the fall of the Valley things have already gotten better. Less traffic, apartments are available. And you should see the storage units we're getting. Most are from the dot comers, and the mangers tell us they're leaving their stuff because it's too expensive to ship.

On topic - that little piss ant could get life in prision, but I have a feeling it will be a short life! He's going to need a lot of protection in jail.

Back to Stusi's question:

If American citizens were fighting as a mercenaries for a foreign country or government, they should be tried as a mercenaries, i.e., by military tribunal. If these non-Afghani Taliban members had been Swiss or French would Americans give a flying shi! about their constitutional protections? I think not.

I'm not certain of any historical precedents regarding trials, i.e., Americans caught fighting for North Viet Nam, or North Korea. Any ideas?

Jane Fonda was bad but at least she didn't bare arms against us. This guy plotted against and was willing to kill fellow Americans.

Mr. Walker had to have been approached with a great deal of skepticism by the Taliban so as to be sure he was not a spy. He must have done some pretty strong denouncing of the U.S. etc. To go from a purely religious person to a Taliban member is a definitive political and ideological move. To go from a Taliban to an Al-Qaeda fighter is a definitively aggressive move.
