The AP says " President Bush invoked executive privilege for the first time Thursday to keep Congress from seeing documents of prosecutors' decision-making in cases ranging from a decades-old Boston murder to the Clinton-era fund-raising investigation." "I believe congressional access to these documents would be contrary to the national interest," Bush wrote in a memo ordering Attorney General John Ashcroft to withhold the documents from a House investigative committee that subpoenaed them. Suggesting that Bush was creating a monarchy or "imperial" presidency, Republican House committee chairman Dan Burton raised the possibility of taking Bush to court for contempt of Congress. "This is not a monarchy," he said. "The legislative branch has oversight responsibility to make sure there is no corruption in the executive branch."

hjw- There is indeed some irony to this, but more importantly it is very "big brother-esque"!!!! Democracies are based on a free vote and a system of checks and balances between the three branches of government. When one branch decides it is going to act independently IMHO it is a socialist act.

King Bubba needs some pruning.
While the gardeners are at it, they need to trim a little off all three branches of government just on G.P. You have the right to an informed opinion -Harlan Ellison

Well, As I recall the Republicans said they wanted less and smaller government. I guess this is their way of doing it. Just eliminate the need for congress altogether!
I think they forgot to mention that they also wanted more and more corporate influence.More big business ~ less government! Way to go Bushy! It's bad if your enemy is quick. It's worse if he is patient.
