While cleaning out Grandpa's estate, I came across these 6 old bibles and other religious texts ranging from 1826 to 1901. They are: Sacred Song for Social Worship, Methodist Hymns, The Soldiers' New Testament, Holy Bible (small) Holy Bible (large book with writing inside) All are in very good condition considering their age. The bindings are all in excellent condition except for one which is missing the back piece. Some of the bibles have personal writings inside from the owners of the past. This adds some mystique to the bibles and really tells a story about what their lives were like. I think many of the books are from either the Puritan or evangelical period here in staunch New England. Grandpa was a great traveler and lover of rare and unusual items. What a collector he was! I don't have a clue what they are worth and am looking for an estimate of their price. Check it out at http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1402842596&r=0&t=0&showTutorial=0&ed=1010628377&indexURL=0&rd=1

you can price your old books by comparing them to the listings at either of these sites:

http://www.addall.com

http://www.abebooks.com

I've also heard bookfinder.com is good but haven't tried it.

Old Bibles are very numerous and unless exceptional for some unusual reason don't have high value. Old Bibles are often worth more to the family as part of their family history than as a sellable item.

"Old Bibles are often worth more to the family as part of their family history than as a sellable item."

Isn't *that* the truth!? There are currently several wars raging around the world due to what's in (or not in) "Grandpa's Old Bibles". Best advice: start reading them!

Pretty sad when money is more important than family history.

Younger people don't have the same sense of sentimental value that we have as we grow older. My dad didn't have a bible but I wish that I had his law books.

If my grandparents had written in their bibles I would want to have those today also. But when I was young and interested in other projects, I left these sentimental objects behind.

Since the books being discussed in this thread are of little monetary value today, I would encourage the seller to keep the bibles and someday they may be happy to have them.

I sell 1950's era pottery from one manufacturer. You would be amazed at the number of people who sell "grandma's set that was never even taken out of her china cabinet because it meant so much to her." I would never do such a thing, and I am young.

Helen, I have always wanted to say this, and I hope it stays up long enough for you to see it. You are a complete and total #*!@, you have nothing better to do in life but to haunt message boards sucking the asses of those who you think like you. You have no original thoughts of your own, nor very much intelligence. You are a joke at all of the boards you frequent. In short, #*!@ you and the horse you rode in on.<br />

Apparently, my bad words have been edited out, but I will give you a hint. The first one starts with a B and ends with a H, the second one starts with an F and ends with K.

hcross: I disagree with you. You obviously have your own opinion, however, the manner it which it was stated says quite a bit more about YOU than it does about Helen.

If someone told you on a message board, because they didn't like you, F*ruck you and the horse you rode in on, how would you view that person.

There are ways of saying things you feel strongly about that can let people know how you feel without mounting an outright attack on them.

They may not have active moderators here but they still have CG's.

BTW yes Helen is intelligent, and I think anyone who doesn't realize it is very uninformed. She is not a joke to me, either, apparently I don't count among all the boards you've apparently surveyed.

What was that old advice the moderators used to give: feel free to utilize the ignore button.

The way I read this conversation this morning, Helen complimented you on your desire to preserve family history by saying you were a special person... and your answer was a full flat out attack. Not all fault can be ascribed to Helen here I think.

What is it about chatboards, must they always have a scapegoat to satisfy the mean ones? Why do you think so many people no longer bother to chat? BTW IMHO this discussion belonged in the troll thread where we were actually discussing somewhat related topics rather than a Bible thread.

Your mileage will almost certainly vary from mine, dear reader, as I have my own unique way of thinking.

I am sorry that a couple of your words were edited. But with your edit hints, I was able to understand what you were trying to say.

Good morning everyone, this was the first thread I opened, and saw a very unnecessary attack. Even if you don't like someone you should be gracious enough to accept a compliment when offered.

We finally have a troll but it's in the wrong thread and the wrong subject. Trolls are often confused.

Good grief, hcross! Get a life! Helen's a good person; we love her. Does your bed have MORE than four sides? Is there a fifth meany side?

Count me among those who thought Helen was complimenting you, Hcross. I don't know what undercurrents may exist between you but judging from the seething tone of your post, I take it there are a few and that you believed Helen was being snide in her remarks to you.

And so begins a brand new year on the never-changing chatboards: suspect the worst, never ask first...
