MULTAN, Pakistan (July 2, 2002 7:36 a.m. EDT) - A Pakistani tribal council ordered an 18-year-old girl to be gang-raped in order to punish her family after her brother was seen walking with a girl from a higher class tribe, police said Tuesday.
<snip>
According to the victim, the Mastoi tribe demanded punishment after her 11-year-old brother was seen walking unchaperoned with a Mastoi girl in a deserted part of the village. The boy and his sister are from the lower class Gujar tribe.
The Mastoi tribe called a meeting of the tribal council, which ordered the girl to be raped to avenge their tribal honor. The teenager said she was taken to a hut and assaulted as hundreds of Mastois stood outside laughing and cheering.

Edited because my response was too quick. I understand now that tribal justice was responisible for this. I read it very quickly and thought that it was a gang decision.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Sheikh Riaz Ahmed, has ordered the police chief of Punjab to appear before the Supreme Court, along with other senior provincial officials, in connection with the incident.
In many of Pakistan's remote areas tribal councils, made up of community elders, still work like a lawful body, judging cases ranging from animal theft or tribal rivalry to murder.

It happens spontaneously, as a crime, Helen. What kind of civilized society metes it out as "punishment sentence"? That's why these Arabic countries are mired in darkness and ignorance. Tribal law indeed.

You are right, KatyD, that they are mired in backwards thinking and darkness. However, please realize that not all Islamic nations are so backwards. Before the Russians invaded Afghanistan, they were a shining becon of what it meant to be a Modern Muslim in the Modern World, with FREE education for everyone - including women all the way through their Phd'. They were building a modern infrastructure and the people were encouraged to think Modern by their King. Unfortunately, theSoviet Union played u0pon these new ideas and overthrew the old Monarchy there that was trying to enlighten everyone.
Baically, that's just one example. You have to realize that FUNDAMENTALISM is gripping much the Arab world today, just like Fundamentalists are trying to take over America with their backwards and dark ways. It is the LITTERAL interpretation of Holy Writings that causes this backwards societies, darkness and unending misery. Fundamentalism is the Crack-Cocain of Religion and Literalism is its Delivery System.
Therefore, it is NOT Islam that is at fault, not anymore than Chrisitanity or Judaism is. It is about each person using these materials to bring themselves to God, not to run nations and make laws reflecting those ideals. Arab nations and Fundie Islamic nations are a prime example of that nonsense. Don't let it happen here.

About fundamentalism.
Taking everything literally is for little children who have developed no depth of thought.
Some people are still like that at 40 - but there has to be some blame shared if others send them money for a TV sales pitch and allow them to run universities.
When they say god created the world in 6 days they betray a shallowness that would force them to conclude that my Grandfather only lived for one day if I said things were different "in his day"
In the military the surest way to betray an officer is to take his orders literally. That is known as a "white mutiny" Taking things literally results in some pretty stupid actions.
One reported to me was that a techie reporting the radar was not working was told "Well p-ss on it." So he climbed on his chair unbuttoned and administered a golden shower of conducting fluid on the equipment. Unfortunatly that did not help any more than other things that had been tried.
They ALL are! All of those Fundies! And the Chrisitan ones are trying to be the worst! They want to bring back Stoning as a Death Sentance and other atrocities from the Bible! They want America to be dragged back into Darkness and universal suffering. The Islamic Fundies hate us, not because we have all of these cool eletronic items to play around with, but because we, as a nation, REFUSE to stop being Enlightened (as in The Enlightenment in history). The danger is not from Fundie Islamic nations - they are so backwards that they create poverty and can not harm us. The danger lies in America's own brand of Fundies.
As far as Sadam goes, think about this: whenever a country gets too far behind in technology, its neighbors come and wipe them out. In the middle East, this is Sadam, who is at the forefront and he does it because he encourages a moderate type of Islam. Were Sadam to have been let loose as he should have, he would have kiced the butts of alll of those Fundie Silamic neighbors with their backwards thinking and 9-11 never would have happened! Eat *that* on your way to bed tonight, folks!

What the Nando article didn't say, and NPR did, was that the little boy was taken to the elder's hut and sodomized as his punishment before they placed punishment on his sister for being born female (another word for doormat).
I do wonder, if the woman interviewed was correct,
why this wasn't brought out in the Nando piece.
Sorry, I didn't get the name of the person NPR interviewed, but she appeared to be from that country and an advocate for women's rights.
This has alot to do with culture, but alot more with taking religious materials so literally, be it the Koran, the Bible or other teachings as I saw in answers above.
It is time to realize that we need both sexes equally represented in all political or religious offices in all countries.
Women shouldn't be walking (or hidden) behind men in any country, including democracies.
If men are so weak in some Islamic countries that they "might" be aroused by looking at a woman, then those men should be made to wear blinders! If they are so sex starved (why would any women want to have sex with men like the elders?) that they covet little boys, young girls or unwilling women, it is time for women to demand equal rights while yielding knives, Lorena Bobbitt style! If some Islamic men are so sex starved, or have such low self esteem, that leaders can tell them to take their own lives (and 100s of others) because they will be forever with virgins in the "great beyond" the women should clue them in. What makes them think if they can't get any here, that some virgin would want them in the after life!!!
Recently I have seen reports calling for women to become land holders in third world countries.
I remember a few years ago that some governments gave women telephones in remote villages (Africa?) so they could use them in case of health emergencies, etc. Men were
not deemed dependable enough to keep them. The women were instructed that they were NOT
to give them up.
Having said that, how much have western women demanded equal rights? We don't have any where close to equal rights, but at least we usually don't get killed, stoned or maimed because of it.
