With all this talk if legalizing drugs.... how about prostitution also...

I can think of no valid reason why a woman or man shouldn't be allowed to offer a service for a fee...

Why Not?

Once again, with proper safety regulation, I don't see a problem with it.

I *HEARD* that it's legal in Vegas...True or not? I've never heard of any significant problems there due to it either.

Actually, I could see this happening with a lot less fuss than legalizing drugs. Again, with proper safety issues address, no one gets hurt here.

And before the next thread starts, I'm all for legalizing gambling too.

It is not legal in Vegas. It is legal outside of Vegas. It varies county by county in Nevada. Vegas (Clark County is a dry county) although you'd never know it.

I also believe it should be regulated, taxed, licensed etc.

As to where they'd get business. Invent a better mousetrap they'll beat a path to your door.

Replay - Vegas does have legalized prostitution but it is highly regulated. All the girls must go thru background checks, be licsensed and are required to submit to regular medical examinations. There is a great deal more illegal prositution in Vegas than legal.

I definately feel that prostitution should be legalized. It would be better for communities and far safer.

As for how they would advertise... same way they do now... open up your yellow pages and take a look at the escort ads. Escorts service owners and escorts are submitted to criminal background checks, high licsensing fees, and heavy regulations with their financial records put thru serious scrutiny.

On a side note... Los Angeles, famous for it strip clubs and lap dances enacted a six foot law yesterday. Customers and dancers are no longer allowed to come withing 6 feet of each other.

Krafty - Prostitution was made illegal by men who could not afford it, and the wives of those who could.

Prostitution should be legal but it should be controlled like it is in Nevada.

The purpose of sex is reproduction, plain and simple. Sex for any other reason is perversion. It is abomination, a crime against nature. Having sex for "fun" isn't something people "just HAVE to do", it's a CHOICE THEY MAKE. It is not the government's business to help these deviants make their depraved choices. The laws against this heinous practice are just fine the way they are.

Rats, I thought I did that with a pretty straight face.

Without really strong feelings one way or the other, I'd say prostitution probably ought to be legal with regulation. At least it would afford some protection for the women involved, and maybe also for their customers....

I don't think it will surprise anyone that I think it should be legalized. If a man is dumb enough to pay for sex, that's his business. Why should the government have the right to say you can't? Look at all the potential tax dollars. Set up Bordellos, make sure everyone is using protection as best you can and schedule regular checkups. Would help to stop some of the spread of STDs, AIDS in particular. Geesh, it wasn't until the 20th century when women figured out that sex was actually fun that a man finding a woman on the side became such a big deal. In the earlier centuries, most wives were grateful to the prostitutes.

I visited an old Bordello in Galveston once. I think it was on Depot Street? It was a neat place. Each room has a screen door so the madam could check-in on things. Talk about gaudy decoration! The front parlor was equipped with a lookout window. The madam's room was pretty wild.

taiwan has a large standing army and once upon a time, there were military prostitutes, each has a room and gets medical care, dunno if they are still around.
in hong kong, there is a law which said as long as the woman lives alone in a flat and occupies the entire floor, she is not a prostitute even though she is practicing her trade .so you can have a 3 floor walkup building in the wanchai district with 3 single women on 3 different floors and foreign drunken sailors come and go all nite, the govt said it is okay.
ever see the movie-the world of susie wong??
i agree, legalising the trade provides some protection to the girls and the johns.
it is the oldest profession in the world and dont call the men stupid for using a prostitute,it is that kind of stupidity which drives a man to use a prostitute.

fenix: Prostitution is legal in Nevada, not in Vegas. As stated by davebraun, Clark county has no legal brothels. There are some in Pahrump and we pass two on the way to Reno from Vegas. There are others advertised on that route but further from from the highway where you can't see them.

There's never more than 1 or 2 cars parked around the shabby little places (really, one is a trailer and one is a painted frame building that looks awful) and I bet they belong to the owners. Maybe the clients only come by bus or something?

Since Vegas has the reputation of legal prostitution, a lot of visitors take it for granted that is is OK to accept the offers from our "street girls" and many wind up busted by sting operations. Those that don't probably go home with aids since over half of the street girls have it per our police reports.

LInda - my mistake : )

I knew the lovelies in the clubs, and the strip are working illegally - The guys with the fliers crack me up though. Whenever we would hit the strip it didn't matter how many women were in the group, The flyer guys hit every guy in our group with cards and such for the various freelancers in town. Watching wives and girlfriends reaction when their sig other gets these cards is a great way to entertain yourself when you need a break from the tables.

las vegas and other cities such as chicago also have amateur who arrive on weekend to hustle.
where do you draw the line??
legal professional versus part timers??
it is just like ebay sellers who sell from home and do not collect sales tax versus those who have a brick and mortar store and collect sales tax/
it is a big industry and as long as there is demand ,supply would come from all walks of life.
if you think housewives and teachers and students and office workers do not dabble in that trade, you need to have someone to sing you lalabye and tuck you in bed every nite.

fenix: We loath, hate and detest those flier peddlers. Vegas has done everything they could to stop it but the first amendment keeps them coming back!

As far as prositution in Vegas, the only reason I even jumped in was because the belief it is legal was responsible for turning my little girl back into the beautiful young lady I knew I had all along.

When she was 18, she went a little crazy. Wore tons of dark eye makeup, black clothes all the time, etc. She has long strawberry blond hair and beautiful blue eyes but it was all hidden by the clothes and makeup. When she was waiting for the bus to take her to work one morning, a nice looking young man walked up to talk. At first, she said she was flattered, but then, he asked her how much? She didn't even know what he meant because it never entered her mind anyone would think she was one of "those" girls, and then was so shocked by his question she changed back to normal almost overnight.

My comments about how she looked for two years had done nothing so if I knew who he was, I would give him a big hug

I can imagine that they would get a bit old if you dealt with them day in and day out. I noticed that most of the fliers end up on the ground. Has Vegas tried fines? In LA they started fining bands, promotors, yard sale people etc if their posters were up more than 24 hours after the event in question ended. Defintely took a bit out of the flier and poster plastering in town.
