The pictures are horrible. Wind speed is 145 miles an hour. I understand a large wall of water is descending upon them. How terrible for these people. I hope they can keep safe.

Me too. I haven't heard anything about it today...but the paper said yesterday that two stormd were approaching and that they'd told over 800,000 they should evacuate. Serious business.
We have at least one poster here who lives in Florida....I hope they're not near all this.

My father is on the Gulf in Port Charlotte. I'm worried sick about them because I heard they got hit pretty good. He's on the harbor. He's almost 70 so this is really going to be hard on him. He bought his retirement dream house and just bought a boat that was docked behind his home in the harbor. Guess I'll have to sit tight for a day or two before I hear anything. What a shame!

And our government better not step in and help these people!
They should have enough insurance to cover their losses, and the loss of infrastructure like roads, marinas, bridges, traffic lights, emergency personnel, hospitals, emergency shelters without sucking off us taxpayers!
They can get jobs cleaning up the mess plus doing their regular job(if it's still there).
All those old retired people down there with so much time on their hands can just get busy and start rebuilding houses, stores, and roads...lazy slackers! They want their meds??? let'em work for it !
Kid's school gone ? Well, get those worthless brats sweeping the streets and chain sawing the downed trees!
I hope the people of Florida don't come whining to the government for a "free" hand out!
Do they think this is a "socialist" society ???

Sorry to hear about your Father Cheryl. Port Charlotte is such a beautiful place and I for your sake and his they are okay. Unless he has a cell phone, which might not get through either, you proabaly won't hear for a while but remember no news is good news. Red Cross will be there to help them and probably a lot of volunteers throughout the US will be their also.

I hope the people on Sanibel Island can get through this storm o.k. I've been in several of Florida's hurricanes as I was born there, lived there for 40 years.

I hope they fair well also. Usually when there is a disaster somewhere in the country people in my area where I live will set up some sort of a donation drop off. So that anyone who wants to help, can help by sending things like clothing, food, bottled water etc.
This is one of the things that makes our country great, when the chips are down we all come together to lend aid and comfort as much as we can regardless of party affiliations.

Oh Cheryl....what stress...I'm sorry he's in that area and that you're so worried. I hope all goes well for him and all the others in this area too.

yellowstone - That's the truth isn't it. There are always so many giving, caring people to help those in need during times like these. So many willingly share what they can.
If they had an opportunity to evacuate...I sure hope they did. I have a close cousin in FL....but he's more inland so I don't believe they'll be in harms way.

Great post Crow!!
Why is this disaster something to joke about or to use as a soapbox for political reasons?? Why not instead put aside political differences and show some compassion for a change??

Tough to do yellowstone. When ones mode is of a nature where every post that is made is derogatory. It is difficult to change.
I guess the snow and cold of the midwest is better than what they are having in Florida. I only hope that everyone took shelter and didn't stay around to see the Hurricane. I guess the path will go through Orlando, Jacksonville and then up the coast.
What happened to Bonnie. I thought that she was a hurricane also.
Keep us posted Cheryl....

Yellowstone says,
"Why is this disaster something to joke about or to use as a soapbox for political reasons?? Why not instead put aside political differences and show some compassion for a change?? "
Politics are in everything.
Why should it take a disaster to "put aside political differences and show compassion". Some people have disasters which only affect them or their family....why are they less important than the people in Florida?
I tried unsucessfully in another thread to show that at one time or another EVERYBODY uses SOMETHING provided by the government through taxes.
I bet there'll be LOTS of neocons from Florida holding out their hand to FEMA....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well evidently some don't understand. Roads are government and of course they have to be rebuilt. The rest not, there is no free handout but there is financial aid with a lower interest rate. It's called disaster relief and it is given to anyone in a disaster. There is no discrimination. Tornado's, floods, forest fires, hurricanes and anything else that relates to a disaster.

Wanted to let everyone know my dad is okay. I was able to get a hold of his cell phone number. Thankfully, they were in Orlando when it hit because Port Charlotte got hit with a 15ft wall of water! They've heard from others in Port Charlotte. His house was spared!!!!!!!! The houses around him were not. So, whoever was praying last night - thank you!!!!!!!! It worked. His boat is no longer there, but at least he still has a home.
Right now they are trying to get back into Port Charlotte, but are having no luck. I'll keep everyone posted. He said he'd call after they assess the damages to the area.
