Homeless camps cleared near Clinton library site

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP)

City officials want to eradicate 27 homeless camps, getting their occupants into shelters or out of town as Little Rock prepares for the high-profile opening of the Clinton Presidential Library.

Officials deny that the strategy has anything to do with the Nov. 18 opening, but homeless advocates fear that the city is being merciless perhaps at the behest of the library.

The homeless were living at the library site before construction began.

An annual satirical stage show put on by the Pulaski County Bar Association this week depicts Clinton library officials driving away helpless residents of the camps.

"The idea that we want to clean up the homeless because of the opening is simply not the case," said Skip Rutherford, president of the nonprofit Clinton Foundation.

Mr. Rutherford said he is uncomfortable with the idea of displacing the homeless. He noted one man lived on the old railroad trestle that the library plans to turn into a pedestrian bridge across the Arkansas River.

The city began formulating a strategy to close 27 homeless encampments in the spring. City Manager Bruce Moore said the idea stemmed from Mayor Jim Dailey's tour of a homeless shelter run by Little Rock Compassion Center.

"Clearly, as Little Rock continues to grow, with a variety of projects on the horizon, we want individuals who come here to feel safe, but we also want individuals in our community to feel safe," Mr. Moore said.

"So there's a tourism component of this strategy, but there's more to it," he said.

He said the city is working with the Department of Veterans Affairs to reach those who are eligible for benefits. The city's board of directors created a task force last fall to look at the issue of chronic homelessness, Mr. Moore said.

Police Chief Lawrence Johnson said his department has been trying to handle the homeless camps for years.

The Little Rock Compassion Center's director, Rosemary Holloway, says she supports aggressive efforts to clear out encampments because they tend to contain vagabonds and "professional panhandlers" people whom she accused of having tendencies toward violence and drug addiction.

I can only begin to think of what names we'd be called for making those statements about the poor homeless people.

Just wait Linda you will find out. It won't take long for the liberals to come and and give their one sided opinion.

Libra.

But this is the CLINTON library site....how could he or hillary let this happen? Where's their compassion for all these poor souls who are homeless.

Is his library more special than other business owners/people who also want "aggressive efforts to clear out encampments because they tend to contain vagabonds and "professional panhandlers" people whom she accused of having tendencies toward violence and drug addiction removed from their business sites/homes?

Obviously it is different...when you're a clinton.

Big deal...this is done in every city where there is a big high profile opening or event. I am sure it is being done in NYC around the site of the RNC.

Well maybe they could shack up at the George HW Bush library? Maybe you could take them some cookies too, since you are the June Cleaver type!

Stop trying to play politics with this. When ever something of this nature happens, the officials involved work hard to create a good impression. I worked for a governmental agency and when federal officials came to visit, the management made the place perfect. Everything that was broken, was fixed and the place was very clean from top to bottom. They wanted to make a favorable impression to the feds. It's that simple.

this is a non-story...happens all the time on both sides of the fence as others have said...there, that's my liberal one-sided opinion, as opposed to the conservative's balanced view..

profe51:

Is Correct!

They would have done this to build a WalMart!

But in the case of a Clinton Library:

They could have put up a 2'X 2' snow fence slid in a Wanda doll, and left the homeless alone.

Don't you Bleeding Hearts Agree?

Well, guys, linda is desperate. She lost the ridiculous "Haircut Scandal" debate, the obvious voting machine can be hacked thread and several others .

So she falls back on her old favorite line of desperate Righties..."We Hate the Clinton's".

Of course, they never notice that the Clinton's keep right on rollin' along despite all efforts by neocons to slander and vilify them. HaHa!

I wonder when linda is going to pay a few million for a library? And if she'd want the homeless encamped on it's doorstep.

It's funny....she HATES the poor but when she PERCEIVES the Clinton's abusing them she's just all atwitter!

And I doubt if the Clinton's even know of the problem.....I didn't read any quotes by THEM in that article.

Poor Linda, consumed by hate and jealousy, she certainly seems to be slipping lately...............

Not that I am concerned more for American liberties than you guys;
but
over here, we hear that…
If it were Bush making a campaign speech over there, they’d kick out all visible democrat supporters at the site, including ones with! homes to boot.

Linda, have you had a shot of compassionate conservatism?
Don’t develop derelict propertys and associate them with non-right-wing-groups!
Homeless people need housing too!

You're right, austbounty, the Republicans "vet" everyone that attends a speech or rally by Bush. They have to , get this!...sign a form swearing they are loyal Republicans!
If they dare to disagree, say by wearing a anti-Bush T-shirt, they're ARRESTED!

Democrats are not treated like this when attending Kerry events! They are not first"approved". Kerry people believe in the right to free speech! Republicans don't.

Who ya gonna vote for ?

Nader couldn't even make the ballot in California, Oregon, Arizona & who knows how many other states. Nothing to fear there...

I live near Pittsburgh Pa. In Pittsburgh there are 2 doctors that go out among the homeless to tend to their medical needs. They go out without pay to help. Why because both are compassionate DEMOCRATS.

A VOTE FOR JOHN KERRY AND JOHN EDWARDS WILL HELP PUT AN END TO THE BUSH CHENEY MESS

LOL Really? I thought it proved the point quite well. That dems would be okay with this happening...as long as it benefited a dem they support. Had it been done by a conservative person/group...you'd all be screaming bloodly murder.
