" -- The latest item to be banned from airplanes may have a lot of people fuming.

Lighters are no longer allowed beyond security checkpoints or on commercial flights.

The Transportation Security Administration says the ban includes butane lighters, absorbed fuel and even novelty lighters.

The new policy will be fully enforced beginning April 14th."

Some smokers get very, very irritable when they have to go 6-8 hours without a smoke....since you can no longer smoke in airports and have to arrive 1-2 hours early to check in, add in flight time and there you are. Smokers are definitely the most dangerous lot of people there are..

Matches are still legal. It's the "explosive" possibility of lighters that has them worried.

All this foolishness and our borders are still open. Go figure,

::All this foolishness ::

Replay, I agree. I dont think its so much for our safety; as much as for them to have a CYA all around policy so they cant get blamed for anything going wrong.

I think its a outright sham. Were making our own flight transportation system into a conglomerate of not trusting 'any Americans' to just be friggin traveling!! Everybody everthing is a national terror suspect.

Have they nothing else to do? I don't even fly anymore. I consider some of what they pull a gross invasion of privacy and I want no part of it. A doctor friend of mine is middle eastern American. He went to go through security not so long ago and was stopped. Although he speaks Arabic fluently, he never does in public. The person at the scanner, took one look at him and called the person in charge of security. Anyway, the security person in charge kept him there trying to get him to speak it. They detained him for no other reason but the color of his skin. He stood his ground and refused. He was born here. He didn't feel like much of an American that day.

What's next? Umbrellas with points on the end of them? Perfume because it is flammable and if they allow matches. . . If you want to bad enough, you can turn just about anything into a weapon. Just ask some of the people serving time behind bars. This is just more nonsense.

Shame on all of you. Why, the government is trying to protect us, and all you do is gripe! My goodness...

Did you see how the TSA is having a pilot program at 5 airports where people can mail back their personal items if the TSA would normally confiscate it? There is a machine where you purchase a padded envelope and postage for $7-$8 and you address it back to yourself.

Personally I think it is better than having the government take your stuff, but to pay $7.00 for it is outrageous.

Tell ya what cheryl, next time ya do fly and ya find yourself heading into the Sears building in Chicago, email me on your portable pc and tell me how it feels just knowing your going to be a crispy critter because you didnt want your privacy invaded.
As far as your friend goes, well hes middle eastern-weather hes born here or not,he's still a suspect.ALL middle easterns should be checked-have you forgotten the World Trade Center already?? Those people who flew into the World Trade Center werent Italians, nor were they Irish,or French,or Swedish..they were middle eastern. If your friend doesnt like being checked out-too damn bad..tell the assh*ole to hitch hike next time.

Classic

I think Prof was being fecesious. I suppose you do know what that means. What a bigoted thing to say about middle easterners. Dr. Y is just as American as you or I.

Only middle easterners are terrorists? Hmmm, they have quite a few of Irish descent in Ireland. How about those in Israel? Get a grip.

There are terrorists here in this country that are not of middle eastern descent. Timothy McVeigh comes to mind. McVeigh - Irish or Scottish descent.

I think banning lighters is silly too. So...big deal, put them in your suitcase...you can't smoke in the airports anyway.

But I do understand the reasons behind it. I agree with classic and don't think we need to be harassing old people and women either. Spend the time and money on those who have attacked us....and those who have promised to do so again.

:: So...big deal, put them in your suitcase...you can't smoke in the airports anyway. ::

Not true. There are a number of airports in the nation that do have smoking areas. Sure they are inhabited by 20 figiting people blinking up a storm because at any given time there is the equivalent of a pack of cigarrettes burning in a 10 by 10 room with lousy venthilation but they are our territory where we are safe from the ridiclous whining of the self righteous and we love love them!!

fenix - You are correct in that some airports do allow smoking in certain areas...but more and more are forcing smokers to go outside the terminal to smoke...they don't have 'smoking areas' inside the airport. Even the Honolulu airport which is almost totally an open air airport....restricts smoking.

I frequently fly to CA and one large hub has ONE designated smoking area....in a bar...where you have to order a drink in order to be in there.

Another large hub allows no inside smoking....you have to go outside...and there are very FEW exits that are within a miles walking distance.

Since matches are still allowed....I just don't see what the big issue is over lighters.

Besides....one doesn't even need a cigarette....all one needs do is go inside one of the designated areas and inhale.

I think the reason we have not found any terrorist is that they are running out of money!!

I think the reason is because the TSA wouldn't know what a terrorist looks like even if their ID said Osama Bin Laden.
