My 6 year old granddaughter, Tiffany, is at the emergency room as I write this and I'm worried sick. She woke up this morning with a high fever, vomitting and now a red rash has appeared on her face. She first started complaining about her throat and neck bothering her and then everything else followed. It doesn't look like measles or chicken pocks and I'm hoping that it isn't meningitis.
So, until we know for sure what it is, I'm off work. If it is a communicable illness like measles, I can't risk being a carrier and passing it on to our HIV clients at work. That could kill them. What a mess, what a poor sick little girl.
Goes to show you that the vaccines don't always work. Now the school will have to be notified.

Hopefully it is just scarlet fever (untreated strep throat that results in a rash on the face, neck and abdomen) and it can be treated with antibiotics and in a couple of days she will no longer be in misery.
It is difficult working around HIV patients when there are small children at home as one never knows when there is a virus or bacteria incubating. When I worked in the infusion room with the chemo patients, I was always worried about what germs I was carrying from my granddaughter.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Could be a food allergy. Had a foster sister that couldn't eat strawberries, she would break out in hives, run a high fever and her throat would close up.

Eggs do that to my granddaughter....
There is something called 5th disease and I think it has the symptoms like that. Can't tell you exactly what it is though.

You'll never believe this - it was a gastrointestinal problem (aka flu) and the rash was caused by blood vessels in her face that burst from violent throwing up.

She had 5th disease once a long time ago. The poor kid picks up everything!!

I'm sorry to hear that Cheryl. Even a stomach flu can be painful for a small child, so I hope she gets over it quickly!

She's bounced back already. She called me last night wanting to spend the night with me tonight. We've been watching Disney's mini series Little House on the Prairie together so we have a sleep over. The only thing she asked for while she was in bed yesterday was a math workbook so she could practice her math. She's only in 1st grade and already doing multiplication. The entire class is reading from a second grade reading book and doing second grade spelling. Needless to say, it's one of the very few schools in Cleveland that's any good. She absolutely hates to miss school. All the children in her school are excelling and I hate to see Taft cutting money for education even more, but that's his plan. They have no music teacher due to lay offs, so the one that got laid off comes in once a week for free. Now that's a dedicated teacher.
Hopefully, I won't get what she had. I spend so much time with her she usually passes things right to me. Maybe the supplements I take everyday will keep this bug at bay! Hey, an ad line.

Happy to hear she is feeling better and also about the multiplication. That's really good.
Sounds like that school has some great teachers unlike some schools. I think they need to get rid of tenure and make the teachers accountable for their teaching instead of giving them a free ride. Our school district has some hefty budget cuts. 3.3 million dollars, that includes 3 administrators and 50 teachers. With the ones left there will be enough teachers to have a decent class size.
While working at the voting booth we had a special guest come in and watch how we vote. He was a educational person from Beijing. We got to ask him many questions and one was how big were their classes. He says 80 students. They go to school from 7:30 to 5 and then they go home eat and do homework for 2 hours. I will bet they don't have much truancy there like we do in the US.
Well enough rambling. It is beautiful out today and I bet Cheryl it is on the way to Ohio.

The great weather is here! It's in the 60's and that's perfect for yard work. I have plenty of that to do. The pussy willow tree has dropped all the pussy willows onto the ground and they need to be raked. I have weeds starting to grow like crazy in my garden. I'm having an engagement party for my daughter in May so I have to get busy!

Cheryl it is now 5:30 here and it is still 70 degrees. What a beautiful day we had.
I understand tomorrow rain but I haven't heard the weather report yet. We also need that so if it does I can find many things to do around my house.

Cheryl ... I'm so glad that Tiffany's feeling better. I've been having a tough time of it with my little girl for the past two weeks. She's missed school for almost the entire two weeks. It took for me to fight with the doc to change her antibiotic (a much longer story) and by 3:00 this a.m., I saw the change in her. Only one dose of the correct antibiotic made a world of difference. Kids are so resilient, but I have to admit that when she was crying in my arms in total misery, I cried along with her.
