My mortgage will be paid off very shortly (YIPPIE!!!) so I'll have a bit of extra money each month that I'd like to invest. Gold is something I'm thinking of but don't understand how the income tax thing would work. Do you have to pay capital gains tax on the interest each year? Does the government keep track of how much gold you have?

Stocks in drug companies are usually good for investment, but I hate them too much. But I've been looking at 3M. It's a solid company and very diversified, so it's a thought.

Another thought was hiding it under the bed because if I made 7% profit with the bank, my service charges would add up to 8.9%, making me poorer than when I started out.

Any suggestions?

Send it to me

Congrats on the windfall soon to befall you, not knowing how old you are, I would invest into something other then metals, unless you really do not care about the money.

Might start a roth IRA or play some stocks.

real estate. Anything else is a crapshoot Kraft, unless you know darn sure what you're doing. Look out west (can't believe I'm recommending this, but at least you're not a Californicator)... remember too, when you're friends give you stock tips, free advice is worth every penny.

classic, I'm in WA too,
the second picture is of course the Space Needle, but I know you knew that , the other thing next to it? Not sure, but most likely that picture was taken at the 63 Worlds Fair in Seattle, and that is where they 'unveiled' the Space Needle.

The other is the bridge over the Columbia River, as I don't go that far south (I have plenty of times) but not much anymore, I think Ron could answer that, looks like old pictures

duh me! you go through that bridge from Vancouver WA right into Oregon, in fact, I believe its the middle or three quarters of the way on it, it would have a sign saying You are now entering Oregon. I remember we stayed in a hotel in Vancouver WA right there on the river, and my brother and myself crossed over, just to go tell our parents we 'were just in Oregon' ... well, that way MANY years ago!

Yeah I always hear about gold, and being the best investment, you need to talk to a broker for sure.

My suggestion: Invest it in real estate. Especially real estate in Florida. Florida is growing by leaps and bounds and the prices have really jumped up. Miami has gotten very expensive to live in and is beginning to push others out. If I had a choice, I would invest in real estate along the East or West coasts in a small community such as Stuart or Venice. I'm moving to Winter Haven (in the middle of the state) and even construction is buzzing there! I really don't think you can go wrong. If I had the money, it's where I would put it.

tax free municipal bond .
take a look at MQY,which is trading at 5.89 discount to its underlying asset value.
It yields 6.76 tax free which is equivalent to 9.39 with tax.
You can go to its website and look up on the quality of the muni bonds it invested in.

wash-NTS-these were taken in August of 1971.
I took a months vacation and drove west from New York. When I got to Denver I went straight north thru Wyoming and Montana into the Canadian Rockies to Banff and Jasper National parks. Then I took rt 2 in Canada drove all the way to Vancouver and Victoria,BC.I remember driving my car on a boat and sailing from either Victoria or Vancouver to Seattle,Wa.By this time it had been 3 1/2 weeks and I miss calculated my time and money.I had no cell phone and no credit card-just travelers checks.
When I left Seattle I headed south and this is where that pic on the bridge was taken.Classic made a left turn somewhere and headed back to New York.I do remember going parrell along a river in Oregon going east and I saw a sign for a town that said "The Dallas" I remember it because I was thinking-damn Im in Dallas,Tx already?? Well I drove from Seattle to New York in 4 days-by myself.I know my first nights stop was in Boise,Id.My last stop was in Evansville,In.
My last day,I stopped in Pittsburgh for dinner around 6pm-I remember calling my best friend and told him to stay awake-Im in Pittsburgh,I just had diner, gassed up and I have $1.25 to my name.In case I run out of gas on the way home, you'll be hearing from me.I stopped on the Garden State Parkway in N.J. around 1AM and I called him again and told him I was going to make it home-go to sleep.I crossed the Tappanzee Bridge-which was 75 cents and pulled in my driveway with less the a quarter of tank of gas-I took off my clothes and put the quarter I had left over on my night stand......nothing like planning ahead.

NTS-yea it was some trip.I remember when I was in S.Dakata,I was on my way to Rapid City.I think I was on I-40 and about every 2 miles I kept seeing a sign that said "make sure to stop at Walldrug" I must have seen that sign for at least 100 miles. So naturally I stopped and it was a frontier town-your typical "tourist trap"
I went thru a place called Sturgis,SD.and there were litterly thousands of motorcyles. What I found out years later is that they have a motorycyle rally every year in August there.I went on down the road about 20 miles and pulled into Rapid City-every motel/hotel room in the town was taken. The guy at the Holiday Inn said they had a list of people who taken in tourists for $10.00 a night-of course I accepted as it was better then sleeping in a car.
I was wondering,is there a big mountain in northern Washington? I have a pic here somewhere of me taken in a short sleeve shirt in front a a mountain that was snow-capped-in August,so I gotta figure this mountain has to be pretty big.I dont think its Mt St Helens,as I think thats farther south.

Classic are you sure you were in Washington and not Oregon. There is a Mt. Hood there and probably there was a snow cap. I was there many many years ago and walked down some street in Seattle in my PJ's. When your in high school anything goes. We took a boat trip to Victoria BC. That was before the space needle. Hopalong Cassidy was on the same boat. Well Cruise Ship not a boat. I think there is a difference.

Doesn't everyone that travels in SD stop at Wall Drug?

That is when you could travel and nobody would bother you now you have to keep your windows rolled up and doors locked.

Classic, I think it would have to be Mt Rainier too. We can see that mtn from our living room window, its huge! Or maybe it could be Mt Hood, but Rainier is the Biggest!

Wall Drug.. LOL! I have not been there, my brother was a truck driver and brought back bumper stickers saying Where the Hell is Wall Drug or something like that!

And I have heard too, about the Bikers Rally in Sturgis! Still going on too!

That is some trip! You did that in 71, so it must have been before the 'gas wars' and people could take trips like that!

I'm stuck in the 70's!

NTS-I couldnt find the original pic that was taken of me in front of the mountain in question. This is a copy from a bunch of pics I put on video tape-the resolution is lousy, but you might recognize the mountain in the background.

LMHO Classic!! I remember those days when plaid was the thing to wear. I have a picture of me wearing navy & yellow plaid pants and I thought I was the most fashionable person in the city! Love the belt too... is it about 8" wide?

P.S. Are you still a hunk?
