Come on. This is getting ridiculous. A photo ID to get a license? And where are you to get this photo ID? So, you need a photo ID to get a photo ID. Many use their driver's license. But, wait. You won't have a license because you don't have a photo ID. The documents they want to require can all be easily forged. Who are they kidding? This sounds more like a national ID card than a driver's license. Set standards on birth certificates? I was born in ____, they expect mine will need to be changed? Or will I have to be reborn so that I have the 9/11 commission approved version? The 9/11 commission should be working on other things besides invading my privacy. Like, locating terrorists already in this country. They really need something to do.
Driver's license a hassle? It may get worse
Congress weighs 9/11 security measure, but governors oppose
MOTOR VEHICLES OFFICE
Cathleen Allison / AP
Department of Motor Vehicles offices like this one in Carson City, Nev., could take on new duties under a congressional proposal aimed at countering terrorism.
MSNBC staff and news service reports
Updated: 11:03 a.m. ET May 3, 2005
WASHINGTON - Americans could soon be required to show four types of ID when applying for a driver's license. Despite objections from governors and state legislatures, Congress is close to passing that requirement as a post-Sept. 11 security measure.
advertisement
Civil liberties and gun rights supporters, two groups often at odds, also oppose the measure on privacy grounds, saying they fear driver’s licenses will evolve into a national identification card.
Under the legislation, Americans applying for driver’s licenses would have to bring far more information with them to motor vehicle offices. They would be asked to show birth certificates, a photo ID, proof of their Social Security number and a document with full name and home address, according to a copy of the bill obtained by The Associated Press. It was unclear how the legislation would affect the renewal of licenses for citizens.
Verification required
Motor vehicle departments would be required to verify the documents and the Social Security numbers. States still could give licenses to illegal immigrants, but they would have different designs or colors to alert security officers that they are unacceptable as IDs for boarding planes or entering federal buildings.
Governors and state legislatures oppose the provisions as too costly, and force motor vehicle officials to become immigration officers.
"Governors share the concern for increasing the security and integrity of the driver's license and state identification processes," Raymond Scheppach, the head of the National Governors Association, said in a recent statement. But, he added, the proposed legislation "would impose unrealistic technological standards and burdensome verification procedures on states."
Undermine existing work?
The National Conference of State Legislatures estimated the legislation could cost states more than $500 million and undermine existing efforts to make driver's licenses more secure.
Those efforts are centered on recommendations first proposed by the president's Sept. 11 commission. State and federal officials should focus on those rather than dismantling the Sept. 11 Commission reforms and impose a rigid, "one-size-fits-all" mandate, NCSL Executive Director William Pound said in the joint statement with the governors association.
The two groups noted that an existing framework exists through the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 and "provides the opportunity to develop effective national standards."
Congress should "oppose any legislative effort that would curtail this ongoing rulemaking process," the added.
Senate negotiators give green light
Under the federal legislation, which was attached to a bill funding operations in Iraq, states would have three years after the bill becomes law to meet the standards or their driver’s licenses won’t be accepted by federal officers for identification.
The House and Senate passed separate Iraq funding bills, and only the House included the license provision. But Senate negotiators working on a compromise bill on Monday accepted the House provision.
All but one of the 19 hijackers in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks had some form of U.S. identification, some of it fraudulent, the Sept. 11 Commission found. The commission recommended the federal government set standards for birth certificates and other identification documents, including driver’s licenses.

I haven't done it yet but my wife has.
They give you a list of items you can bring, each item is worth a certain number of points.
You need enough documents to total 13 or 14 points.

That's interesting dad. What were some of the items she had to bring...
Our govenor just vetoed the bill for picture voter IDs. He said it would stop the seniors and people who didn't drive from voting because they didn't have a way to get the ID.
I think a finger print would be the best way for identification. The canadian-US borders have the computer that checks index finger prints and maybe the DMV should get that also. It's to easy to enter the US. I will bet everyone will need a passport before to long.

As I read this, it appears the bill is aimed at NEW drivers license applicants, not renewals.

It could affect renewals. It was unclear how the legislation would affect the renewal of licenses for citizens. Renewals would be easier. Simply bring in your old license and you have your photo ID. However, most states do not recognize anything other than a state ID or a driver's license as a photo ID. So, you'd have to pay the state for a state ID to turn around and pay the state for a license. The state ID then becomes no good so you've wasted that money.
I'm actually surprised that the states are against this. It would bring them more money. I'm glad they are, though. It isn't going to help prevent terrorism. All of the documents they are requiring can be forged. IMO, it's just a way to track where you are and who you are. I'm not a terrorist and I resent being treated like I am.

I know you Libs will say...they just want a job, what's the big deal but the 911 group just wanted to learn to fly a jet.

Cheryl. I still don't see it affecting renewals, even the above statement does not address the issue.

Libra63 Cheer again, because of your last two posts you are now at 100% on my child like stupider scale.
Just remember its your President that has done nothing to close our borders. Except blow hot air about the problem like he does on almost all important issues facing the U.S.A. Some of that hot air came along with Bush's "good friend" President Fox of Mexico when they both called The Minute Men that are guarding some of our southern borders "VIGILANTES".

It would be great if they'd clarify what the bill would require if:
1. You lost your license and had to get a replacement,
2. You are renewing your license,
3. What you should use as a photo ID when applying for a new license, and,
4. Since these documents supposedly have to be checked, how long a wait is there between applying for the license and actually getting one? Do you have to renew your license a month ahead of time to allow for the verification process? How are they planning on verifying birth certificates? SS cards would be relatively easy to verify, but birth certificates would be another story.
The enormous amount of extra work for other agencies would be a burdon especially when it comes to having to verify each and every document.
Libra
Eight years? Lucky you. I renew mine every four. More money in the state's pocket. Mine is coming up for renewal next year. Producing my birth certificate will be a royal pain. I have to write to Columbus to get it and then wait for it to arrive in the mail. For some strange reason, even though I was born in the Cleveland area, my birth certificate is housed in Columbus. Hmmm, maybe there's something my parents neglected to tell me about my place of birth.

In our local paper today the editorial was on National Drivers licenses. So maybe that is the way they are going to try and go. For identification was a SS number and previous drivers license. I didn't read the whole thing and of course my husband threw out the paper already.

LOL - The lefties here, once again, cracking me up. Complain over and over and over again that this admin. is doing NOTHING to protect us. Then when OUR CONGRESS does....they complain about how much it will cost, bla bla bla.
The House passed this bill 369-58.....so not many Representatives felt the way the ULTRA-liberals here do....or the Blame Bush for Everything group do. I doubt the 58 voting against this House bill were voting against funding our troops again. Of course, I look forward to checking when the Senate votes to see how kerry or edwards or h. clinton voted......maybe they [k & e] will AGAIN vote against this major funding to our troops efforts. They did last time....wouldn't surprise me if they did again.
"National standards for driver's licenses will discourage illegal immigration and make it harder for terrorists to get documents to evade security, supporters of the bill said."
Which is exactly how the 9-11 terrorists were able to get on to the planes to begin with - using their drivers licenses as identification. So...NOW the dems HERE don't like this new bill/want it to pass.....which would take us back to square one so they can continue complaining NOTHING is being done to protect us.
While I would rather not see ANY undocumented person in the US be given an ID card of any sort....at least this calls for 'singling them out' with a different type of ID....one that will NOT allow them to use it for purposes like flying on our airlines.

Four More Years....YES!!!
edited because the Senate has not voted yet.....but it's expected they too will pass this bill by a large majority. We'll see.
