WASHINGTON - When asked during the campaign debates to name the gravest danger facing the United States, President Bush and challenger Sen. John F. Kerry, D-Mass., gave the same answer: a nuclear device in the hands of terrorists.
But more than 3 1/2 years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the U.S. government has failed to adequately prepare first responders and the public for a nuclear strike, according to emergency preparedness and nuclear experts and federal reports.
The thought of potential nuclear attack and our unpreparedness in my opinion hasn't hit home with the American people.
I thought that after 9/11 that our eyes had been opened and the horror of the events was strong enough to shake us out of our state of naivety and complacency... but this does not seem to be the case.. I believe that most Americans still don't believe that an attack is possible let alone probable..
When will Homeland Security and the safety of our citizens become a priority? We are very concerned with saving the world...when will our government take our protection seriously? I hope it will not take a nuclear attack to wake them up..

Oh, Maggie, you old gloomer doomer....can't you just put your head in the sand and pretend "the hills are alive with the sound of music...tra-la-la-la """
Now start dancing through that meadow and be happy.
Drink the kool-aid and behappy, be happy......
Life is fine and our great leaders will take care of us (Boy! Will they !)

Maggie, I disagree with you. I think after 9-11 Americans can surmise it is probable now more than ever. But what is the average American supposed to do about it? Walk around on eggshells anxiety ridden of a nuclear attack? No, they go about their lives. But as soon as you hear a plane crashing or some similar disaster, I dont think the alarm isnt too far from peoples minds of something else crazy going on.
and even so, what is the immediate solution to other countries having nuclear weapons? We have them. Are we supposed to tell other countries not to have them when we do?

How exactly does one prepare for a nuclear attack? Is that what the saran wrap and duct tape was supposed to be for?
Personally I've never really concerned byself with surviving a nuclear attack since I have a nasty habit of living within walking distance of first strike targets.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

No that's why years ago some people had bomb shelters. This scare has been going on for quite some time with Cuba being communist and Castro not our friend.

I didn't mean to sound like "Chicken Little" the sky is falling...the sky is falling...But Ms.Fenix...never underestimate the Power of Duct Tape!
I am saying that it is imperative that we do everything possible to secure our country against attack. And not let our arrogance over ride our intelligence. We are fallible and much more vulnerable than we choose to acknowledge. Until 9/11 we thought we were invincible, and we found out that wasn't the case.. many promises and vows made by our government to protect our country and to seek and bring to justice those who perpetrated these acts of terrorism have not been kept...
I think the vulnerability the country felt after 9/11 attacks... contributed to the re-election of President Bush...because of his arrogant , tough, warrior demeanor...in an effort to bolster their confidence which had been badly shaken, to alleviate their feelings of vulnerability... but this false sense of Superiority and invincibility...does very little to protect us and keep us safe..
Is the United States going to be the next "Great Empire" that falls? Didn't Greed and Arrogance contribute to the fall of the other Great Empires..before us..

All I can say is that I am damn glad that Bush beat John Kerry in the election. Whooowee, Just imagine how much in a barrel of sh!t we'd be in if Kerry was president right now.

Quick Maggie, you'd better leave before that happens and take a few other dissenters and naysayers with you.

You got it baby! It is the natural evolution of society. Historically it comes shortly after a nation ceases to build upon it's greatness and begins to attempt to assert it's greatness upon others.
As for the many uses of duct tape... I know that song. There is very little in this world that cannot be repaired with duct tape, super glue, or a combination of the two. Makes a great emergency suture kit too.

Famous Movie Song:
We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when
But I'm sure we'll meet again some sunny day
Keep smiling through, just the way you used to do
Till the blue skies chase the dark clouds far away
Now, won't you please say "Hello" to the folks that I know
Tell 'em it won't be long
'cause they'd be happy to know that when you saw me go
I was singing this song
We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when
But I'm sure we'll meet again some sunny day
