Senate Urged to Condemn Disrespect for Jurists
Panel Hears From Chicago Judge Whose Family Was Slain
By JESSE J. HOLLAND, AP

Angry words, says Judge Joan Lefkow, can encourage people to "to exact revenge" on judges.

WASHINGTON (May 18) - A federal judge whose family was murdered asked the Senate on Wednesday to condemn harsh remarks about the judiciary by commentators such as evangelist Pat Robertson and members of Congress, saying their words could spark more violence.

''Fostering disrespect for judges can only encourage those that are on the edge, or on the fringe, to exact revenge on a judge who displeases them,'' U.S. District Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow told the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Her husband and mother were slain in the couple's Chicago home in February. Bart Ross, a 57-year-old unemployed electrician from Chicago, committed suicide in suburban Milwaukee in March after leaving a note confessing to the murders. He had been angered when Lefkow dismissed a malpractice suit he had filed, authorities said.

The judge also was the target of a murder plot by white supremacist Matthew Hale. A federal jury convicted Hale in April 2004 of soliciting her murder, and he was sentenced last month to 40 years in prison. She was never attacked.

Congress should ''publicly and persistently repudiate gratuitous attacks on the judiciary'' that have occurred in the days since after the Terri Schiavo case, Lefkow told the hearing on courthouse security.

After the death of Schiavo, a brain-damaged Florida woman whose parents unsuccessfully sought to have her feeding tube reinserted despite her husband's wishes, some Republican members of Congress lashed out at judges involved in the case.

At the time, Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania said, ''The actions on the part of the Florida court and the U.S. Supreme Court are unconscionable.''

''This loss happened because our legal system did not protect the people who need protection most, and that will change,'' House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said. ''The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior.''

Referring to a different decision, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said he wondered whether frustration against perceived political decisions by judges ''builds up and builds up to the point where some people engage in violence, certainly without any justification.''

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition and head of the Christian Broadcasting Network, appeared on ABC's ''This Week'' earlier this month and criticized the federal courts. ''Over 100 years, I think the gradual erosion of the consensus that's held our country together is probably more serious than a few bearded terrorists who fly into buildings,'' he said.

Lefkow said that kind of ''harsh rhetoric is truly dangerous.''

''I have never encountered a judge in the federal judiciary who can remotely be described as posing a threat, as Mr. Robertson said, 'probably more serious than a few bearded terrorists who fly into buildings,''' she said.

Lefkow called on Congress to increase funding for the U.S. Marshals Service, which protects judges. She also wants legislation to ban putting personal information about judges and other government officials on the Internet without their permission.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., focused on the importance of judges being willing to request protection when needed. He asked Lefkow why she didn't request protection after the white supremacist group threatened her life several years ago.

Lefkow said she lacked the expertise to properly assess the threat and that, to her knowledge, no system was in place to properly assess and protect her safety.

Congress should make sure that money that has been allocated for home security systems for federal judges gets to them as fast as possible, she said.

Congress has approved $12 million to install home security systems for the 2,200 active and semiretired judges and magistrates in the federal court system.

''As recently as last Friday, which was May 13, I was spotted and harassed in a restaurant in downtown Chicago,'' Lefkow said. ''Had that harasser come back rather than left a nasty sign and had a gun, then obviously I wouldn't be here today.''

LOL The republicans are saying 'get out of our way'....

THEY SURE ARE...and YOUR leader, Pelosi, is telling all the democratic leaders NOT to offer their own suggestions on SS. Just complain about those the republicans HAVE proposed.

If you can't help, refuse to offer your own suggestions...then, YES, GET OUT OF THE WAY and let other who are willing to do so...offer their proposals.
May 18, 2005
"House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi yesterday said most Democrats approve leadership's strategy of not having their own Social Security reform plan for now and of focusing on defeating President Bush's plan.
She said only a few Democrats want to move ahead now with Social Security proposals to counter Mr. Bush's.

So....more obstruction from the left....just like on President Bush's nominates. Obstruct...rather than let an up or down vote take place.

as far as asked the Senate on Wednesday to condemn harsh remarks about the judiciary by commentators such as evangelist Pat Robertson and members of Congress, saying their words could spark more violence.

LOL...while I haven't read Robertson's statements...this is sure a laugh. What about all the harsh statements coming from the democratic party....and their supporters like newsweek whose actions/words are the cause of people DYING and all the ethical violations the left media are being forced to admit.

how funny.

DEL SOL HIGH SCHOOL APPEARANCE: Reid calls Bush 'a loser'

Comment draws sharp rebuke from GOP; senator admits afterward he crossed line, apologizes

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada talks to an American Studies class Friday at Del Sol High School.
Sen. Harry Reid went to Del Sol High School on Friday to teach students "Checks and Balances 101."
But in the course of a discussion on filibusters and Senate rules, Washington's top Democrat ended up giving the 60 juniors a good lesson in partisan politics, particularly about the commander in chief.
"The man's father is a wonderful human being," Reid said in response to a question about President Bush's policies. "I think this guy is a loser.
"I think President Bush is doing a bad job," he added to a handful of chuckles.
The "loser" comment drew a quick response from the GOP.
Friday afternoon, Republican National Committee Communications Director Brian Jones issued a statement calling Reid's comments "a sad development but not surprising from the leader of a party devoid of optimism, ideas or solutions to the issues people care about most."
After the statement was released, Reid phoned the Review-Journal to acknowledge he thought he crossed the line.

Yea...let's look to the democratic leaders to instill respect for the highest job in the land, and for the President of the United States of America.

However a judge is an officer of the court and that is the part of the job, can't please everyone.

Ron - should they?....yes...I think it's GREAT that many on the right have been pointing out that they see these appointed or elected judges as 'making laws' rather than interupting them.

The dems haven't been about to win an election since 2002...so now they're using the activist court judges to 'get it their way'. That's why their obstructing the President's nominations right now. They don't want a more balanced judicary....they like having an imbalance of liberal judges in the court seats.

As far as what a person says...causing another to take illegal actions...just not so. NO ONE forces anyone to do anything by their words. It's the criminal who is to blame....not what someone else has said.

I have just completed watching CNN Lou Dobbs show...where he was asking pointed questions of Barbara Boxer - an extremist from CA., why the dems were pulling this obstructionism and why are they having a hissy fit about 'rule changes'....when she herself, along with other dems, did the same thing in 1995 and 1997. hahaha...

This is why some ultra-lefties are tired of hearing about 'double standards'. They just can't deal with the deluse of people pointing out to them that THEY DID IT...so why complain when the republicans are doing it.

Lou Dobbs did a GREAT job of pointing out the democratic party's hyprocrisy, imo. Even posted Boxer's own words in quotes from 1995 and '97 on this subject.

Since it's been rumored that peepa, likes Lou Dobbs, I don't expect this went over too well with him.

Judge Lefkow since taking office in 2000 has had some terrible cases where half of the criminals went to jail but some didn't. How does anyone know who sends hate notes? To blame it on one party or another is stupid. She is a Federal Judge and probably living in Chicago she gets the most horrendous trials. I will agree she needs protection and also her family. They thought it was over when the young man killed himself but seems like it isn't.

And ol Barney Franks had to keep dean in check.....

But I'm just SURE these hateful statements don't cause anger to be directed at the person they're directed at. No...SOME must see them as being just civil conversations.

Especially funny coming from DNC Chair, Howard Dean, though...since he said something about IF/when binladen was ever captured....he should be given a FAIR TRIAL. Guess he doesn't believe the same right he'd give binladen should also be applied to Tom Delay.

Dean : One scream
Delay: 100's of scandals:

Meet Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX), the man Republicans have chosen as their Majority Leader in the House of Representatives.

Tom DeLay is at the center of a bewildering array of investigations into corruption, abuse of power, and ethics violations.

As the courts and committees investigate DeLay's misdeeds and hand down indictments, keeping track of all the scandals can be a full-time job. So we thought it would helpful to offer folks this quick and easy guide.

NEW! The Travel Scandal IV
Tom DeLay's airfaire for a trip to England and Scotland was paid for by Jack Abramoff's credit card, and other expenses, including food, phone calls, and golf was charged on another lobbyist's credit card. That's in direct violation of House ethics rules that prohibit registered lobbyists for paying for expenses for members.

Read the Washington Post story...

The Skybox Scandal
Tom DeLay invited donors to share a skybox with him at a Three Tenors concert, a skybox paid for by super lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who is currently under investigation by the Senate. Just two months after the concert, DeLay voted against gambling legislation that Abramoff was lobbying against. The skybox tickets were worth thousands of dollars, and DeLay never reported the gift.

Read the Associated Press story...

The Travel Scandal III
Tom DeLay claims that a 1997 trip to Moscow (where he met with the Russian Prime Minister) was arranged and paid for by a nonprofit public policy organization. But people who knew about the arrangements claim that the trip was actually arranged by lobbyists and funded by a mysterious company registered in the Bahamas that may have served as a front for Russian companies with ties to Russian security forces.

Read the Washington Post story...

The Travel Scandal II
Tom DeLay participated in a $70,000 expenses-paid trip to London and Scotland in 2000 that sources said was indirectly financed in part by an Indian tribe and gambling services company lobbying Congress.

The Family Payoff Scandal
Since 2001, Tom DeLay's political action committees and campaigns have funneled more than $500,000 to his wife and daughter since 2001.

Read the New York Times story...

The TRMPAC Scandal
In Texas, it's illegal for corporations to make donations to fund political campaigns. So Tom DeLay's Texans for a Republican Majority political action committee (TRMPAC) took $190,000 in corporate contributions and funneled them to the RNC, which then donated exactly $190,000 to TRMPAC-supported candidates. DeLay and TRMPAC are currently under investigation by a grand jury.

Read the DNC Special report...

The Travel Scandal
An investigation by the Justice Department showed that Tom DeLay accepted a trip financed by the Korea-U.S. Exchange Council, breaking House rules that prohibit accepting travel expenses from "a registered lobbyist or agent of a foreign principal."

The Ethics Committee Scandal
Knowing that he faced investigation for a growing pile of scandals, Tom DeLay and the GOP House leadership purged the Ethics Committee of Republicans -- including Chairman Joel Hefley (R-CO) -- who weren't willing to overlook charges against DeLay, replacing them with members loyal to the leadership. They then changed the Committee rules to make it more difficult to begin investigations. Democrats on the Committee have refused to take any action in protest until the rules are restored.

The K Street Scandal
Tom DeLay has pushed lobbying firms to deny jobs to Democrats, and hire only Republicans, resulting in another Ethics Committee admonishment for inappropriately pushing a lobbying firm to hire a former GOP congressman. DeLay has pressured GOP lobbyists to make contributions to Republican candidates and the RNC.

The House Medicare Vote Bribery Scandal
Tom DeLay and the Republican leadership kept open the vote for the Medicare bill for three hours -- long past the 15 minutes specified in House procedures -- in order to pressure Republicans to vote for the bill. Rep. Nick Smith (R-MI) said GOP leaders offered "bribes and special deals," leading to an investigation by the Ethics Committee, which admonished DeLay.

The Texas Redistricting Scandal
When DeLay and his fellow Republicans were redrawing the Congressional districts in Texas to push Democrats out of the House, he used the Federal Aviation Administration to try and track a plane containing Democratic state legislators. The House Ethics Committee investigated DeLay's actions and once again admonished him.

The Westar Scandal
In 2002, executives at Kansas energy company Westar wrote a memo outlining how they could purchase a "seat at the table" with $56,500 in contributions to political committees associated with Tom DeLay and the GOP. DeLay was later admonished by the House Ethics Committee for creating the appearance of impropriety.

More important than what any polls are showing....the FACTS are....

"Democratic National Committee (DNC) fund raising under the chairmanship of Howard Dean shows a disappointing $16.7 million raised in the first quarter of 2005, compared with $34 million reported by the Republicans."

"That tends to confirm dire predictions by old-line Democratic fund-raisers of a fall-off in money if Dean became chairman."

"He had promised to bring in heavy individual contributions, as he did in his 2004 campaign for president."

"But the DNC in the first quarter received only $13 million from individuals, compared to $31 million for the Republican National Committee (RNC)."

So...yes howard....keep up the good work. Keeping insulting every block of voters and individuals you can. It's WORKING to show your party stands for little but placing blame and calling names.

Republicans money is not going to buy the 2006 or 2008 elections.

The American people that are dissatisfied with Bush and the republican controlled Congress by a margin of 2 to 1. Those are the people that will not buy but decide the next 2 elections with their vote.

NOW WE SEE THE REPUBLICANS LIKE LINDA_K STARTING TO BRAG ABOUT HOW MONEY THEY HAVE. WHY BECAUSE BUSH AND HIS CONGRESS HAS TAKEN THE MONEY AWAY FROM THE WORKING AND MIDDLE CLASS AND GIVING IT TO THE RICH REPUBLICANS.

And this ol' democratic continuation of trying to use this 'class' warfare, just like you [collectively] do with the black/white division, isn't going to work either. Because people vote their pocketbooks...and our economy, job improvements, GNP are all doing well. It appears the Bush-hating dems can't read or comprehend all the positive reports.

Hey Linda_K,
Show me something besides your mouth about the popularity of your failed leader Bush. Show me and other readers where your failed leaders popularity has increased. SHOW ME SOMETHING BESIDES YOUR LIES AND TWISTED WORDS.

Now you talk about jobs ha ha. Is that the same jobs that as many as 1/3 are filled by people that are not in the U.S. legally? The same jobs that Americans are know making a wage that doesn't even keep up with inflation. Are those the jobs you a bragging about?

About positive reports. I see very few truly positive reports EXCEPT FOR THE RICH.

Are you talking about the positive reports like the ones you try to make about Iraq. HA HA. Yes I do see minor positive reports out of Iraq but at what cost old woman at what cost. So where is anything positive about Iraq. Once again show me something except your mouth that shows the American people are positive about you leaders handling of THE IRAQ WAR.

We will all see how wrong I am when the American middle and working class come back to bite your kind right in your asses.

You can get off the Democrat hating Bush G.O.P. line. I don't hate Bush I just Hate what he has done to America.

Linda_K I sure hope you can show us all some things were the American people are more positive about Bush than negative. After all no poor leader can be completely at odds with the people can they?

Linda_K, I also don't hate you but I do hate your lies and twisted words that only support and promote the division of class in America. Nothing more or nothing less.

Let me put it to you this way peepa.

YOU can look at the US DoL website to see the job market has improved.

You can find reports that say while citizens don't feel our government is focusing on what they'd like to see them focused on, they ALSO are blaming the democratic party for their obstructionism.

And as far as this middle class division that you're trying to imply....

when American's are asked which economic group to they see THEMSELVES in....it's the middle class.

quote: Optimistic and Middle Class AmericaAs with most surveys, the majority of respondents viewed themselves as middle class. Only 2 percent of U.S. adults consider themselves upper class, and fully 79 percent say they are lower-middle, middle, or upper-middle class.
When asked what income it would take for them to consider themselves “rich,” the median response was $200,000 per year with 27 percent saying they’d have to earn more than $500,000 to be rich. However, responses show the definition of rich is different in urban vs. rural areas. The median response for those in rural, suburban, and mid-size counties was $150,000 per year; only respondents in large urban counties defined rich as earning $200,000 per year or more.
Consistent with previous surveys, young, single and educated Americans remain optimistic about their future. Fully 46 percent of 18-34 year-olds, 44 percent of singles, and 46 percent of those with a bachelor’s degree or higher say it is likely they’ll be rich someday.
For more information about the Annual Survey of U.S. Attitudes on Tax and Wealth,
---

As far a 'like-ability' goes...this is VERY normal and follows historical patterns. He's NOT going to be taken out of office because he's not popular...and he was JUST relected appro. 6 months ago.

What I believe YOU'RE failing to recognize...is that a lot of your polls mention people are dis-satisfied with this or that...but don't specifically mention the reason why. ie: the question 'are you happy with the direction the Bush administration is currently taking our country?' Your stupid, having no value polls, MIGHT say yes they are. But they don't ever mention WHY. Could be they're disappointed in President Bush/his admin. because his administration is allowing the dems to BLOCK many of the issues that are important to them. AS I HAVE READ THEY ARE.

But, given a second chance to vote again, would they still vote for him or choose kerry. HIM by a long shot. That's the point I make to you.

so scream on.

Hey Crow look at Linda_K's own post where she is trying to say all is well for the American worker. What a wicked old woman she is trying to BULL ROAR people like she always does about her failed leader.

Linda_K posted this, The seasonally adjusted average weekly wage rose $4.88, or 0.9 percent, to $542.40 -- the biggest percentage rise since August of 1997. The average hourly wage rose far more modest 5 cents, or 0.3 percent, to $16, similar to the gain posted in March. Linda_K how many years did this increase take to come along?

The increases left hourly wages up 2.7 percent over the last year and weekly wages up 3.3 percent over the period. By comparison, the department's Consumer Price Index, the government's main inflation gauge, rose 3.1 percent for the 12 months ended in March. WOW LINDA THE AMERICAN WORKER IS JUST ROLLING IN DOUGH. From these figure's I don't see how the American worker could possibly spend all the extra money he or she is making.

Linda_K thank you so much for your info on how well the American worker is doing under your failed leader Bush. It just proves my point that the American worker is getting screwed under Bush.

Crow what Linda_K forgot to tell us is from what level does this increase come from. She also forgets to tell us how many new jobs were filled by illegals LOL. I saw a report that as many as a full 1/3 of new jobs are filled by illegals.

Linda_K it also seems like you have forgotten how American workers have taken cuts in benefits and pensions under Bush.

Crow this woman Linda_K is not a nice woman you and I both know that. Did you happen to notice how she got caught trying to make one of her famous copy and paste look like it came from the AP when a lot of it came from some BULL ROAR RIGHT WING WEB SITE.
