Money's getting even tighter, and we may have to drop our beloved Road Runner cable modem service for a while <sob!>.

Does anyone have opinions/experience with the free ISP's such as Net Zero? I'd appreciate any info, links, experiences, etc.

Thanks!

I have bluelight.com's service installed on my computer and I use it as a backup when my AOL service is doing funny things. I haven't used it often but when I have I've been happy with it. It prompts you to sign up for a yahoo email address if you don't already have one, and while you're online it shows you ads, which I don't consider too much of an annoyance. I'd probably use it exclusively if my husband didn't balk at not having a "pay" service provider.

Oh yeah, and they'll send you ads for bluelight.com (kmart's online site) every now and then, but not often.

I have net zero on a laptop. It is ok but has ads across the top. The service seems fine. The nifty thing for a laptop is that you can select a new city by zip code and dial right away wherever you are.

Our area newspaper offers local internet connection for $19.95, which includes the daily paper, making it about $7 per month. I also use Bluelight as a back up and have almost no problems with it. I used to have Net Zero when they first came out, but the service was spotty in my area.

I know there are several free ones out there now. You just have to put up with the advertising.

When my mother first got her puter, she used BlueLight.com. It was great for her to learn the internet to see if she liked it compared to her WebTv. The only bad thing about it was the Ad Box in the bottom right. I wasn't use to it but she didn't seem to mind.

There was never any trouble connecting. I would recommend it.

The prevailing aspect as to which free ISP you will use is whether there is a TX number available that is not a long distance dial up.

I tried Net Zero. Did not like all the hoop jumping to load and the obtrusive ad banner.

Try this one from Excite: http://freelane.excite.com/

Ad banner sits at top of browser (IE5) above tool bar and does not float.

Like most free ISP's, you will have to enable cookies and click on an ad now and then to enable the ISP to remain activated. Freelane alerts you.

I have never used anything but free ISPs since I got on the internet. I started with www.freei.net and still use their email and sometimes use them to get on the web. I have switched to altavistas free service and have found it to be quite fast and reliable. Both have ad banners which you can put where ever you want them on your screen. They can be "docked" so do not "float" as stgmike mentioned. I like them just fine but having never used anything else I have no comparison.

Re: your WW1 photo thread in EO. If you look up the UK Commonwealth Grave Registration and the Public Records Office, you may be able to track down some history on the subject in your folder via email.

Make sure you have the name correct. Could be "Faulder" rather than "Faulde."

Forgot to mention that with both of these ISPs you do not have to ever click on an ad banner to stay connected. You just can't turn them off.The only time I care about that is when the "punch the monkey" ad comes on. Then I cover it with a post it!

sgtmike, You truly are a fountain of information! I think I will try that. I do like to know a bit about the people whose portraits I have. The writing on the back is very difficult to read so may not be able to get the name right. That is a stumbling block. Fun to try anyway.
