I know nothing about smoke alarms so I am hoping someone here does. I was just about to get on the phone to start work when, the smoke alarm went off. I never heard it go off before so it scared me. I knew there was not a fire. I couldn't figure out how to make it stop. I went outside and called the landlords office who didn't offer any suggestions or offer to come over to help me shut it off.

Finally it stop on it's own.

What would make it go off? I wasn't cook anything. I live on the top floor. the doors were shut, the AC was on.

Seriously, my ears hurt so bad right. I know if there had been a real fire for sure I would have woken up.

Still ringing....

Smoke alarms also ring when the battery needs to be replaced. Your smoke alarm finally stopped when the battery was dead.

Small insects can set them off too. This is sometimes a problem in apartments where roaches may not be under control.

In most smoke alarms, a dead battery is indicated by intermittent beeps rather than the continuous ring that you heard. But you should replace the batteries if you aren't sure.

Popnrock, sometimes smoke alarms just plain go bad. To be on the safe side just get a new one. We get a new alarm every 2 or 3 years.

Popnrock,
Smoke alarms also go off when they get dirty. Most people do not know that a little dust changes the sensitivity.
You might want to open it up and give it a cleaning.
Also, when it goes off, you can grab a broom and do either of the following:

a.) wave the broom under the alarm to create more air flow. Alarm should shut off within 1 or 2 minutes if there is not a fire.

b.) Use broom to knock that annoying device from its unreachable perch and then proceed to smash it to smithereens!

The one I had in an old apartment was directly wired into the ceiling. No batteries. It went off one night in the middle of the night. Talk about loud!!! I had my son fanning it while I called maintenance. They called me back and had me pull the breaker in the apartment.

Cheryl, that is exactly what happened to me yesterday. I turned off the alarm at the breaker. I found out the cause of it going off was the high humidty. It's hot and steamy outside and freezing inside. I would rather be cold than listening to that noise!

When we moved into this apartment, they had put in a new smoke alarm. It went off every night about drove us crazy,so the landlord bought us a different brand and we haven't had a problem unless the batteries get low.
