Congress Backs Library Privacy
3:13 pm PST, 16 June 2005

The House has voted to restrict investigators from using an anti-terrorism law to peek at library records and bookstore sales slips.

Wednesday's 238-187 vote came as lawmakers ramped up efforts to extend the Patriot Act, which was passed quickly in the emotional aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

When Congress passed the law, it included a sunset provision under which 15 of its provisions are to expire at the end of this year.

Liberals and libertarian-oriented conservatives have applauded the move having campaigned for changes to the Patriot Act, citing privacy and civil liberties concerns.

A number of libraries had also begun disposing of patrons' records quickly so they would not be available if sought under the law.

But the administration has said weakening of the act would draw a veto from President George W Bush.

I haven't read if this has been up for a vote in the Sentate yet or not.

But if it does pass both Houses, I hope he does use his veto powers.

Law enforcement needs these powers to be able to identity those who would do what the 'home-grown' terrorists in London did. I don't support civil liberties for those who wish to place bombs on buses, train and transit systems here in the US. And I don't support tying our intelligence nor police forces from using whatever means they need to ... to prevent the London attacks here.

I disagree, Ron.

Books that terrorists might be checking out on how to make bombs....how to use other explosives...how to use cell phones to set them off....most certainly could be information that should be checked out.

The FBI isn't going to bother with people who are checking our Harry Potter type books....only ones that would be of interest to terrorists.

--The FBI isn't going to bother with people who are checking our Harry Potter type books....only ones that would be of interest to terrorists.--

Looks like our reading material will be limited to LindaK's and the FBI's taste

Uh, LindaK , I really don't think terrorists need a public library to build a bomb. And, checking out a book on bombs does NOT make the reader a terrorist but if it does in the eyes of the government then THAT IS DANGEROUS!

What next, LindaK, burning books, banning books...??

Linda

This information is readily available over the Internet. Do you really think they need to go to the library where they'd have to check a book out? Get real.

Maybe the government should keep track of all those terrorists checking out copies of the Bible and the Koran. Next the government will want to know how many terrorists are checking out "Barney the Dinosaur" or the Teletubbies".

Come on Linda get real. The information found in a library can easily be obtained by doing a search on Google. You know Google, your favorite search engine.

If you type "how to build a bomb" in a google searcg engine you get over four million listings and I did not even need a library card.

Now I wonder if Timothy McVeigh's library card is still good.

House Votes to Extend Patriot Act

By GLEN JOHNSON
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House voted to extend indefinitely the anti-terrorist USA Patriot Act, while limiting to 10 years two provisions of the law that have become linchpins in the ongoing congressional debate: allowing federal agents to use roving wiretaps and to search library and medical records.

By a 257-171 margin, lawmakers who earlier Thursday had watched reports of attempted terrorist bombings in London, agreed to renew key provisions of the Patriot Act that were set to expire at the end of this year.

Forty-three Democrats joined 214 Republicans in passing the bill, which dropped 14 of 16 expiration dates on provisions initially drafted into the law shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Hours earlier, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved its own general extension of the law, but it called for Congress to re-examine the wiretap and library provisions after another four-year time period. The full Senate likely will vote on the bill this fall, before the competing measures are reconciled in a conference committee.

President Bush cheered the House vote.
"The Patriot Act is a key part of our efforts to combat terrorism and protect the American people, and the Congress needs to send me a bill soon that renews the act without weakening our ability to fight terror," Bush said in a statement released by the White House.

Of course this would make LindaK and any other pro communist, pro dictatorship happy....loosing more and more freedoms.

And since I'm sure LindaK has never been inside a library (or read a book) it doesn't make any difference to her. Nor with that famous tunnel vision can she see what this holds in store for her children and grandchildren.

The Republicans are so lucky....they want to pass a bill ??, just scare people with a very convenient bombing.

Did you expect any other comment from Linda? I can picture her in old communist Russia waving from the tower and she and the Czar plan to crush the little people. Can you just picture the evil half smile on her lips? We all know what happened to the Czar and his family. . . I can picture her standing with Hitler on a balcony in Germany shouting out for the elimination of the poor, the different. We all know what happened to Hitler and his lover. . .

Dictatorship will be crushed. The people will rise up to eliminate it. It's a historical fact. So, the best thing to do is ignore her dictator-like comments or better yet, consider the source of them and feel grateful. Grateful that you are in no way related to her. Grateful that she is not your neighbor or your friend. Views like hers are born out of ignorance and hatred. Just like the Czar and Hitler.

Okay, go ahead, Linda. Make your lame "well you said this", "you said that", "you called me a name", "you're an anti-American socialist" comments. I can take it. I just consider the source and laugh my way through the day.

Yes, Cheryl and soon it will be controlling which books are on store shelves, who writes what, but since LindaK doesn't read books it won't matter to her. In a dictatorship all the good little comrads have to do is go Baaaa! Baaa!!!
Reading, learning, thinking, are NOT encouraged in the Republican dictatorship so LindaK will be verrrry comfortable

How funny. You two are so ignorant to think decisions made by our Congress.....show we live under a 'dictatorship'.

It appears both our House and our Senate agree these are necessary measures for these times....they just disagree on wanting limits on when the laws would expire.

But of course....that's all Linda's fault - according to the two fools above. LOL

I am glad Linda is cheering for the terrorists. It took another terrorist attack in order for the members of the House to change their mind. Once again this shows our government is acting out of fear and haste. I wonder what other laws will be passed in the middle of the night.

I hope Linda gets arrested under one of the articles of the Patriot Act and is kept as an enemy combtant for three years without seeing a lawyer. Then we shall see how glad she is to be an American and grateful for all her rights.

She says, --You two are so ignorant to think decisions made by our Congress.....show we live under a 'dictatorship'.--

No, diddilyass, "decisions" aren't part of the dictatorship....this is where you choose to be blind.....it's the fallout and consequences of these bills that will aid driving our "free" country into a dictatorship which by the way both Bush and Rumsfeld have praised, they came right out and said they LIKED dictatorships!
